SmackDown reportedly planning a Women’s Money in the Bank match

Is this tonight’s big announcement from Shane McMahon? If so, it’s a pretty big day in the history of women’s wrestling.

As we get closer to the Network’s women’s tournament in July (which we learned more details about earlier), we may be able to get excited for another first from WWE... a Money in the Bank match for the ladies.

According to Pro Wrestling Sheet, “2017 is more than likely going to feature the inaugural Women’s Championship briefcase”.

This would be the first time women have had an opportunity to fight for a briefcase containing a contract for an anytime/anywhere title shot (men have been doing so since the match & stipulation were first introduced at WrestleMania 21 before spinning off into its own event).

There’s no word yet on who would compete in the match, but the five women who participated in Backlash’s tag match who aren’t currently champion seem like safe bets. Maybe throw in Lana, who’s debut’s been teased since the Superstar Shake-Up, and you’ve got a pretty good field. The report also doesn’t specify if the women’s version will be a ladder match, but after featuring females in cage matches, Hell in a Cell and other “extreme” stipulations, it’s hard to imagine doing a Money in the Bank any other way.

It’ll also be interesting to see how the creative team handles having two briefcases on Tuesday nights, with one of them floating around a smaller roster than the men’s division.

We’ll let you know as we hear more, but in the meantime... excited by this news, Cagesiders?
