WWE women’s tournament to be called ‘The Mae Young Classic’

A short time ago on Twitter, Triple H unveiled a new, and very important detail about the upcoming Women’s tournament WWE is holding this Summer.

It’s name.

He also confirms some mid-July taping dates, but let’s get back to the show’s new name.

Hall of Famer Johnnie Mae Young was a multi-time champion in the National Wrestling Alliance over her fifty-plus year career spanning from the 1940s through the 1990s. She rose to new prominence during the Attitude Era when she and her best friend The Fabulous Moolah began making frequent appearances on WWE television, usually in comedic segments, but occassionally getting involved in matches and taking the same bumps as anyone else, despite their age and gender.

She died in January of 2014 and was remembered by not only WWE, but also TNA and independent promotion Shine for her life and legacy.

In announcing that tickets for the July 13 & 14 shows will go on sale this Friday (May 26), Haitch also teased a tag line for the event:

Still no word on who will make up the reported 32 wrestler field, but we have to be getting closer to those announcements.

While we wait, how do you like the name - and the sentiment behind it - Cagesiders?

UPDATE: WWE.com has posted on the reveal. You can read their full story here, which promises more news soon and includes this quote from Trips:

The Mae Young Classic will mark a significant moment in the evolution of WWE. We are proud to provide this unique opportunity for the best female talent from around the world.
