Live from Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, this will be the thirteenth Backlash in WWE history, and the latest SmackDown-only PPV in the company’s new brand split era - and first since the post-WrestleMania 33 "Superstar Shake-up" recalibrated the blue brand’s roster.
Fresh out of a House of Horrors match at Payback, World champion Randy Orton defends his title against Jinder Mahal - who helped cost him a victory in that showdown with Bray Wyatt. The United States championship will be on the line, with the newly acquired Kevin Owens defending against SmackDown’s “Face That Runs The Place”, AJ Styles. And the Fashion Police round out the title matches, as Breezango are on the case trying to claim the tag belts from The Usos.
The Women’s title won’t be on the line, as champion Naomi has been forced to throw in with potential rivals Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch against Natalya, Carmella & Tamina’s Welcoming Committee. A guy commissioner Shane McMahon hopes will soon be as big a star for his brand as he was in Japan, Shinsuke Nakamura, makes his main roster debut against Dolph Ziggler. And two very personal showdowns take place when former brothers Luke Harper and Erick Rowan square off, and old NXT rivals Sami Zayn & Baron Corbin jockey for position on Tuesday night’s race to the top.
A pre-show leads into the three hour main show, and features a panel discussion of all the matches with Renee Young, Peter Rosenberg, Booker T and others. That hour long program will also include a match between the recently called up Tye Dillinger and the recently solo Aiden English.
