Last night (Mar. 5, 2017) at Fastlane, Goldberg did indeed hit Kevin Owens with a simple spear and Jackhammer to win the Universal championship in a matter of seconds. His doing so means his match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33 on April 2 in Orlando will be for the title.
Yes, the main title on the Monday Night Raw brand will be defended by a part-timer against a fellow part-timer at the biggest show of the year. In fairness, both have worked far more dates than usual this year, and both seem willing to put even more time in. Still, neither is a regular presence week in and week out.
Now we get to wonder if this is what will close the biggest event of the year, a match that will likely last significantly less time than it takes for either man to make their entrance for it. Perhaps that paves the way for Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton to headline the show in their WWE championship match.
Or perhaps we should get used to shorter than usual main event matches, even at WrestleMania.
Either way, here we are, in 2017, and Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar is your top title match from Raw at WrestleMania. What a world.
