After John Cena pinned AJ Styles to win his 16th world championship at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) this past Sun., Jan. 29, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas, the new champion had a conversation with referee Charles Robinson before he was handed the title. There was obvious meaning behind Robinson receiving the assignment, considering his connection to Ric Flair, the previous lone record holder for most world title reigns.
So what was said? WWE.com asked Robinson in an interview up on its site today:
“We were just talking about how cool it was that I’ve reffed for Ric Flair so many times and now I’m refereeing his 16th title and tying [it] up with Ric. He thought that was pretty freaking cool.”
It WAS pretty freaking cool, a nice little easter egg for fans paying attention to a man whose job requirements include being present but mostly invisible.
Also interesting? Robinson says he tore his plantar fasciitis just seven minutes into a 24 minute match.
What a man.
