The rumored mixed-tag team match at WrestleMania 33 sounds AWESOME

Nothing is official right now, of course, and television storylines haven’t even hinted at this (at least not yet, anyway), but the current rumor is John Cena will team up with his girlfriend, Nikki Bella, to take on The Miz and his wife, Maryse, in a mixed tag team match at WrestleMania 33.

On the surface, it’s something of a baffling decision. Cena is one of the top singles stars on the entire roster and he literally just won the WWE world championship in one of the best matches within the promotion in a number of years at Royal Rumble. This would almost certainly mean he’s losing the strap at Elimination Chamber, where Nikki is scheduled to wrestle Natalya.

That’s the same Natalya whose main focus in her promos has been the fact that Cena will never want to marry Nikki.

Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez spent plenty of time speculating — it’s important to note they weren’t reporting this, but rather ruminating on what makes the most sense here — that this could very well lead to Cena proposing to Nikki right there in the ring at WrestleMania. It would be the ultimate payoff to a seasons long storyline in Total Divas, as well as the aforementioned promos from Nattie.

It would also make for one hell of a WrestleMania moment, and we know that’s what WWE is in the business of making at “The Showcase of the Immortals.” This would be sacrificing a major Cena match but doing so in service of creating an even bigger Cena moment.

IF that’s the plan, and it certainly makes a great deal of sense for that to be the case.

It’s also worth considering the rumors flying around that Nikki will be leaving, possibly because of her neck injury and also because she’s getting deeper into the world of business. On top of everything we’ve mentioned, it would be one hell of a moment to have the most visible female on the roster for the past decade get to work with her longtime boyfriend for the very first time and have said longtime boyfriend propose to her on the way out.

The Miz and Maryse just happen to be the perfect pair to pit against them. How they get there hardly matters, though Miz is involved in the Elimination Chamber match later this month and it’s not crazy to think the duo could cost Cena his title to get them started down this road.

Assuming the rumors are accurate and the speculation isn’t far off, this all sounds AWESOME.
