When Randy Orton won the Royal Rumble last month, WWE was quick to announce he would main event WrestleMania 33 on April 2, 2017, in Orlando, Florida against the WWE world champion. At the time, that meant a match against John Cena.
Then Bray Wyatt won the title in an Elimination Chamber match at the pay-per-view (PPV) of the same name last night in Phoenix. So it’s clearly Wyatt vs. Orton now, right?
Not quite.
Or it might be better to say not yet.
WWE.com is sure to leave the question open ended — despite having a handy graphic ready — to help promote future television on SmackDown Live:
It is, of course, tradition for the Royal Rumble Match winner to take on the champion of their brand at The Grandest Stage of Them All. However, in this case, there are many variables. Will Wyatt and Orton want to face each other at WrestleMania? And will that point become moot if John Cena invokes a rematch clause for the WWE Championship between now and WrestleMania? As Daniel Bryan put perfectly on WWE Network’s Talking Smack, a lot can happen in the seven weeks leading up to WrestleMania.
It’s clear we’re headed for the match but it’s nice WWE is taking the time to tell the proper story to get us there.
Right?
