There’s been talk for a while that Vince McMahon loved the “Broken” gimmick which made Matt Hardy one of the hottest acts of 2016, but we got a form of confirmation this past Monday when the WWE version of Matt’s character appeared on Raw.
Fan fears that the character, dubbed “Woken” so WWE can trademark it, would be watered down or neutered were quickly dispelled during a promo with Bray Wyatt that was about as broken as anything that appeared on Impact last year.
Sports Illustrated says a source within The ‘E reached out to them with word Hardy is being “allowed a creative license by McMahon”. Vince reportedly sees money in the already established gimmick, and has trust built up in Matt over two decades of working together to give him an opportunity to get it over with the WWE Universe as he sees fit.
The post from SI also says Hardy is aware of talk Vince doesn’t see him as a top guy - and that Jeff Jarrett similarly thought Jeff was the star and his older brother a supporting player when he was involved at Impact - and Matt is motivated to prove them wrong with his “Woken” WWE run.
He’s off to a good start. And with Vince on his side, we like his odds of keeping it going.
