“Free agent” John Cena returns to WWE on Monday, Dec. 25 (yes, there’s a live Raw on Christmas... and some of it is commercial-free!) for the first time since repping Team Blue at Survivor Series.
With an increasingly busy schedule of television and movie work, Cena’s been open about his status as a part-timer. We’re not exactly sure when he’ll next be on our screens. He’s not advertised for a televised date until Raw’s 25th anniversary show, which also happens to be the Royal Rumble ‘go home’.
If his appearance at the last ‘Big 4’ pay-per-view (PPV) told us anything - other than that he’s a kayfabe mercenary willing to work for whichever commissioner who meets his price - it’s that WWE isn’t afraid to just trot him out as an attraction without having any major plans for his character. The official preview for Monday’s show in Chicago makes it sound like this week could be another example of that, teasing his connection to Chicago (he made his WWE debut there against General Manager Kurt Angle in 2002) and the possibility of his bringing some holiday cheer.
But there were rumors of a rematch with Intercontinental champion Roman Reigns, who is supposed to be back after some planned time off last Monday. And Cena’s not currently advertised for the Rumble, but he wouldn’t miss that... would he?
