Sylvester Stallone teases Brock Lesnar joining the Rocky-verse

Sylvester Stallone got fans buzzing earlier today with this Instagram, teasing a big announcement. The presumption was that he’d be revealing something about Creed 2, the follow-up to the 2015 spin-off/sequel to his Rocky franchise. Stallone has been doing a lot of promotion for the second film starring Michael B. Jordan as the son of Rocky Balboa friend and rival Apollo Creed on social media lately.

What got pro wrestling and MMA fans intrigued was the photo and “#BrockLesnar” tag...

Big challenges come in all shapes and forms! Very cool announcement at noon!#brocklesnar #rockybalboa1976

Creed 2 will follow Jordan’s Adonis Creed as he deals with the fame he achieved in the first film, and balances his family with championship pursuits. Stallone’s teased it would follow-up on the story from Rocky IV, where Adonis’ father died in the ring during a fight against Soviet super-fighter Ivan Drago.

That led to guesses that Brock might be cast to play Drago’s son. Dolph Lundgren played the elder Drago back in 1985, and it didn’t require him to do much more than be physically menacing... so basically what Lesnar does when he shows up on the occassional Monday night for Raw.

At this point there are sadly no rumors that Paul Heyman will play Brigitte Nielsen’s cousin.

Also somewhat sadly, it looks like the “noon” announcement didn’t have anything to do with The Beast Incarnate. It was anything but sad news for Steven Caple Jr., who Variety announced has been tapped by Stallone and Jordan to succeed the in-demand Ryan Cogler (who just completed Marvel’s Black Panther with Jordan and is expected to executive produce Creed 2) in the director’s chair.

Maybe the Brock news will come later. Or Sly was trolling again.
