There have been rumors floating around that WWE wants to use a special guest referee for the planned Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal main event at the upcoming Survivor Series pay-per-view on Nov. 19 in Houston, Texas. The three rumored names in consideration were John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock.
Of the three, the easiest answer, and the one that makes the most sense, for a number of reasons, is Cena.
It should come as no surprise, then, that the Wrestling Observer is now reporting that Cena has been chosen for the role.
We haven’t seen or heard from Cena since his loss to Roman Reigns at No Mercy back on Sept. 24 but he was expected back for this show in some form. As a free agent at the main event level, it’s fitting he would officiate the headlining match featuring the Raw champion taking on the SmackDown champion in a non-title bout.
WWE recently announced AJ Styles will challenge Mahal for the WWE championship on SmackDown Live next week, so it’s at least possible the match will change before we get there. That wouldn’t do much to change Cena’s role, assuming the report is true. The company has made no announcement of as much and hasn’t even really hinted at the possibility of a special guest referee on television.
Stay tuned.
