WWE had Shane McMahon bumping all over the arena ahead of SmackDown’s next big pay-per-view (PPV), but it was no match for the New York Yankees and continuing news coverage of the mass shooting in Las Vegas.
On Oct. 3, the blue brand pulled its smallest audience since the Fourth of July holiday. 2,323,000 tuned in for the fourth straight week of a McMahon confronting Kevin Owens and the rest of the final push to Hell in a Cell. That was ninth among cable originals for the day, with Major League Baseball’s wild card playoff game and a host of Fox News shows besting SmackDown.
Ratings-wise, WWE found itself third behing Yanks/Twins and FX’s American Horror Story. After a rise to .82 last week, their share among 18 - 49 year olds fell back to a .74.
Throw in that the show didn’t even chart on Nielsen's social media TV ratings (per Wrestling Inc), and this was not one of the company’s better nights.
Do they have something up their sleeve this weekend which will stop the slide and get them back to their usual ballpark next Tuesday? Baseball could still be an issue, but with only one division series game possibly scheduled for Oct. 10, they might avoid another showdown.
