Dwayne Johnson: Career counselor

New, comments

In his latest column for SI.com, Justin Barrasso is reporting that Nia Jax walked out of WWE because of booking plans for a match with Sasha Banks at TLC. That’s not entirely new, but the additional detail that Jax did so on the advice of her cousin Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is:

“The reason behind Nia Jax’s much-discussed ‘leave of absence’ has been uncovered, as Sports Illustrated learned that Jax balked at the idea of losing clean to Sasha Banks at TLC. She called her cousin, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, to ask for his advice, and Johnson encouraged her to walk away if she was unhappy.”

SI’s story last week on the circumstances surrounding Jax’s departure played up the relationship with Johnson, but didn’t indicate he was the one who’d actually advised her to leave - or that she’d even discussed the situation with him.

My initial reaction to this was basically, “come on... where would you even get that info?” And I’m still a little skeptical, but it’s not totally outlandish. The relationship between Jax (real name Lina Fanene) and Johnson is well documented, including by Nia herself, who refers to her cousin as her mentor. And WWE would certainly want to keep Rocky happy, for however much time the movie star can give to the company, whenever he can find it - something quietly dealing with her absence and having Alexa Bliss downplay it in interviews accomplishes.

The big question is whether this move or cousin Dwayne’s involvement will lead to Nia being booked any differently when (or if) she returns.
