Cageside Countdown Nomination Thread: Best and Worst of WWE's PG Era

aubreyblogs on Tumblr

This week marks eight years since WWE began the "PG Era". For the unaware (and how can you be by this point...unless you've been away for a good while, which is totally understandable), in July 2008, WWE quietly announced (no, seriously, this was pretty much the extent of it. This one press release probably buried deep in the bowels of the website) that all their programming would be rated PG going forward.

Though there have been many reasons why WWE went PG, from Linda McMahon running for United States Senate, to that one time Shawn Michaels bled too much, to the double murder-suicide involving Chris Benoit, to simply a changing of the times, the answer is probably money.

Who am I kidding? It's definitely money.

Though WWE's tried to bring in a younger audience, all it's seemingly done is alienate them. The average WWE viewer is the oldest it's ever been, while their television ratings have flirted with lows not seen since the height of WCW.

But let's not sell the PG Era short. It's produced some pretty good moments. Really good moments. But it's also had some pretty bad moments. Really bad ones.

But what is the best and worst moment of the PG Era?

We're putting that very question to you for our latest Cageside Countdown. Here are the rules:

  • First and foremost, only stuff that's happened in WWE's PG era will count. That's anything from the day the announcement was made, July 22, 2008, to right now.
  • Second, please try to keep it to in-ring happenings if possible. Anything happening away from the ring that is nominated will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
  • Because this is a dual nomination thread, there is this additional rule: All nominations must have either Best or Worst in the subject line. And of course, the word Nominate. As in Nominate (best) -€” your best moment here for best moment or Nominate (worst) -€” your worst moment here for worst moment. Your nomination must include (best) or (worst) or it will not count.
  • And as always, defend your moment in the comment box. A picture, video, a short description, something. Don't assume everyone knows.
  • See something you agree on? Give it a rec; that's how the countdown's made.
  • Multiple nominations of the same moment will not count; only the first nomination's recs will count. So before ya go nominating, use CTRL-F or CMD-F and make sure your potential nominee wasn't already named.

Nominations close 24 hours from date and time of post. Speaking of countdowns, I have one to finish. Have fun!
