The Road to WWE Money in the Bank

Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, along with Dean Ambrose, entered the WWE’s main stage at Survivor Series 2012, interfering the main event triple threat match between John Cena, CM Punk, and Ryback. The trio, known as the Shield, made an immediate impact on the main event scene, helping the then champion, CM Punk, retain WWE title. For the next eighteen months, the Shield ran "their yard", becoming the most dominate team in WWE history.

Right at the peak of the Shield’s success, Rollins decided he had had enough of running in a pack and decided to fix that issue.

On June 2, 2014, Seth Rollins turned his back on the Shield, splitting the group up, and aligned himself with the Authority. Shortly after that, Rollins won Money in the Bank. At Night of Champions 2014, Rollins and Reigns were scheduled to meet each other in a one-on-one match but Reigns had to bow out of the match the day before due to emergency hernia surgery.

Fast forward to WrestleMania 31, where Reigns had earned a title shot against the then WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar. Due the closing moments of the match, Rollins cashed in his MITB contract during the match, pinned Reigns, and won the championship, "stealing" Reigns’ moment.

Rollins held the championship until early November 2015 when he suffered a knee injury on the WWE’s European tour and had to be stripped of the title. At the time, Rollins was slated to defend the title against Reigns at Survivor Series. It would be the second time a Rollins-Reigns match was canceled on pay-per-view due to injury.

At WrestleMania 32, Reigns defeated Triple H in the main event to become a THREE TIME WWE World Heavyweight champion. Rollins made his return from knee injury after Reigns successfully defended the title at Extreme Rules 2016 against AJ Styles. After two years, the former Shield brothers will finally face off against each other on pay-per-view. The match up is being touted as a WrestleMania caliber main event, with the added story of Ambrose, who is in the MITB ladder match this year, possibly inserting himself into the drama by cashing in either during or after the main event.

The Stakes:

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship is on the line. Rollins never lost the title, so he has legitimate claim for an opportunity to win it back. Reigns seeks to prove that he would have beaten Rollins last year for the title, had he been given a chance. Also, a dream match ten years in the making in AJ Styles versus John Cena looks to steal the show, something both Rollins and Reigns seem motivated to outperform.
