When the news hit that WWE would be holding AJ Styles off of this weekend's live events in order to let him heal up from a nagging injury, the assumption was it was the same back issues which plagued him late last year while he was still in New Japan and Ring of Honor.
Not so, according to an update from the man himself, who says it's an ankle that's bothering him. Seeing as he worked last week's Raw and then only had a backstage scene on SmackDown, it's reasonable to assume the "bang up" occurred in his six-man elimination match with Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows against Roman Reigns and the Usos on May 9.
The Phenomenal One apologized to folks who bought tickets to see him on his home turf in the Southeast at this weekend's house shows, but does say he'll be in North Carolina come Monday for the Extreme Rules go-home show:
For those of you who were expecting to see AJ Styles this weekend, I apologize. Banged my ankle up pretty good, but I'll be ready for RAW.

Styles main events his second consecutive WWE pay-per-view (PPV) on May 22 in Newark, New Jersey when he again challenges Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight championship.
Rest up, AJ, and we'll see you Monday night.
