Cesaro becomes No. 1 contender for The Miz's Intercontinental Championship

The Swiss Superman defeated Kevin Owens to earn a shot at the title.

During the opening segment of Monday night's episode of RAW in Los Angeles, Kevin Owens interrupted Shane McMahon and demanded that he receive his rematch for the Intercontinental Championship. McMahon instead opted to have Owens face Cesaro in a No. 1 contender's match for the belt, with the winner going on to face The Miz.

The two men had a lengthy and typically great match -- actually a rematch of their feud that culminated at SummerSlam 2015. At the end, Cesaro finally managed to reverse an Owens pop-up powerbomb and hit the Neutralizer (which may have been rechristened "the Gotch Neutralizer") for the pinfall victory.

It wasn't specified on RAW when this Intercontinental Championship match would take place, but the Payback pay-per-view on May 1 is a possibility.

Owens went into WrestleMania 32 in his second reign as Intercontinental Champion, but lost the title in a seven-way ladder match. Zack Ryder won the title in that match, but lost it the next night to The Miz when Miz's wife, Maryse, interfered in the match, slapping Ryder's father and distracting him.

The Miz -- who watched the entire Owens vs. Cesaro RAW match backstage with Maryse -- is currently in his fifth reign as Intercontinental Champion. Cesaro has never held the Intercontinental Championship before. His lone singles title in WWE came as United States Champion back in 2012-13.
