This message from WWE's United Kingdom-specific Twitter account has the wrestling internet in a tizzy this morning:
BREAKING: @WWE will return to @TheO2 Arena London on September 7th for a special, one-night only event. pic.twitter.com/s5IcmPuto1
— WWE UK (@WWEUK) March 11, 2016
The O2 Arena's website has the show on their front page and the following description:
WWE have announced that its unique brand of action packed entertainment is returning to London for a one-off special on Wednesday 7 September at The O2. Don't miss this unique opportunity to see WWE Superstar and Diva favourites Roman Reigns, AJ Styles, New Day, Sasha Banks and Charlotte and many more to be announced.
A lot of fans and internet sites have taken the announcement to mean London is getting its own Network special, a la Roadblock, but there's nothing in the Tweet or venue description that indicates that's the case. The excitement is understandable, because this would be the first main roster televised program (other than Raw and SmackDown during their regular tours) since the UK-exclusive pay-per-views like Insurrextion stopped in 2003.
But there's nothing in the tweet or the venue's promotion which indicates it will be televised. If it is a live Network-exlusive show, it will be the first to not occur on a Saturday (September 7 is a Wednesday, a night typically reserved for NXT), as well as the first to not be centered around Brock Lesnar (although he could certainly be added at a later date, the Tokyo, New York and Toronto shows all started as Lesnar house show appearances).
We'll keep you posted, Cagesiders. But if London's reachable for you, keep your eyes out for tickets to... something... from WWE on Sept. 7.
