We’re (probably) not getting an AJ Styles vs. Shawn Michaels match at the Royal Rumble

Apparently some rumors started making the rounds that WWE wanted Shawn Michaels to return for a match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) next January in San Antonio. The event will be held at the Alamodome, a gigantic arena that seats some 65,000 fans, so the idea that the company wants to bring a hometown hero out of retirement for the occasion isn’t too off the wall.

The rumored match would be against current WWE World Champion AJ Styles. He played into it today on Twitter:

While also addressing it in an interview with Sports Illustrated:

"I would love the opportunity to wrestle him. I'd love to learn from him, but who's to say if that's going to happen. Right now, it's all speculation and rumors that I'm finding out like everyone else is, but man, what a match that would be."

For what it’s worth, PW Insider is reporting WWE isn’t currently planning on putting the match together. Michaels, while available for angles and even segments where he’ll rock his gear and get physical, has always been hesitant to return for an actual match, instead choosing to honor the retirement stipulation in his loss to Undertaker at WrestleMania 26 back in 2010. He’s also 51-years-old.

Still, the idea of a Styles vs. Michaels match sure is sweet.

Just don’t expect it to happen.
