In a highly amusing display of WWE trolling the fans in attendance at their house show in Newcastle, England, tonight, they arranged for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe to make a surprise guest appearance.
Why is this so hilarious? Because the local rivalry between Newcastle United and Sunderland is one of the most heated and passionate in the Premier League, and in their last meeting just four days ago Defoe scored the emotional winner with a superb volley that for a Geordie would have been like a kick to the teeth.
Unsurprisingly, in a building where a large proportion of fans would be Newcastle United supporters, Defoe was greeted with a torrent of boos when he made his grand entrance, as this Vine WWE posted clearly demonstrates:
The sarcastic caption that accompanied the Vine (Tonight in #WWENewcastle, Sunderland AFC striker IAmJermaine gets a "not so warm" welcome) suggests that Defoe got the reaction WWE desired and expected.
What do you think Cagesiders: clever local marketing or another stark reminder that WWE loves to stick it to their most loyal customers? One things for sure, Vince McMahon can never buy Newcastle United (which was bizarrely rumoured a year ago) after this cheap stunt!
