In a short statement posted on the company's website, WWE announced that former Divas Champion AJ Lee has retired from WWE:
AJ Lee (April Mendez) has decided to retire from in-ring competition with WWE. We wish AJ the very best.
The wording is interesting but no word beyond that she has retired.
AJ signed with WWE back in 2009 and worked developmental, including season three of NXT. She debuted on the main roster in 2011 and went on to have a short but highly successful career, including stints as Raw General Manager and becoming the longest reigning Divas champion in history.
She married CM Punk in 2014 shortly after his highly publicized break up with WWE. Recently, while taking time off to deal with lingering injuries, she very publicly criticized Stephanie McMahon regarding treatment of women in the company.
We'll have more on this story as it develops.
