Former UFC title contender Chael Sonnen was a guest on the latest edition of the Talk of Jericho podcast and during the course of the discussion, he told an interesting story about getting a call from WWE shortly after he was suspended for two years by the Nevada State Athletic Commission late last month.
"I got a call about two days after I was suspended. WWE executive calls me up and he says 'hey, we read what you're going through and we just want you to know we're not interested'. Well, why'd you call me, you know? That's what I'm thinking. This is kind of a new phone for me, it's kind of a new number, you had to go through some work to get my number. So I just said 'thanks'. He goes, 'listen, if you were 24-years-old, we'd give you a contract and you would be making a whole jackpot full of money'. That's the term that he used. He goes, 'you know, but at your age we just don't want you'. So I'm just thinking 'why did they call'? Then comes why they called. They go, 'but we think TNA is going to be calling you and if they do, then we want back in the game'. So I was like okay, at least I get why you called, you know, at least now I get it. I kind of just chalk that up to a fun story."
He was suspended on July 23, effectively retiring from MMA in the process, though he did compete in a jiu-jitsu match at Metamoris 4 just this past Saturday night in Los Angeles. Since that time, there haven't been any rumors floating around about TNA showing any real interest in him.
Which, according to the man himself, means WWE isn't interested either.
The idea of Sonnen becoming a pro wrestler continues to sail further down the river.
