WrestleMania XXX could look like WrestleMania 2000

It looks like "WrestleMania XXX" next year could bear a striking resemblance to "WrestleMania 2000", one of the worst shows of its kind.

Michael N. Todaro

When looking back at the storied history of WrestleMania, the biggest event WWE puts on each and every year, one of the worst shows it has ever run was undoubtedly WrestleMania 2000. The main event that night was a four-way elimination WWF championship match pitting Triple H, the titleholder at the time, against Mick Foley, Big Show, and The Rock.

The added kick was that each wrestler had a member of the McMahon family in his corner, with Vince backing Rock, Shane backing Show, Linda backing Foley, and Stephanie backing Triple H. It turned out to be the first WrestleMania in history that saw a heel leave with the WWF championship.

Now, some 13 years later, we could be getting something similar at WrestleMania XXX, scheduled for Sun., April 6, 2014, in New Orleans.

From the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter:

The planned main event for WrestleMania is being looked at as one of those winner gets control of the company storylines that Carlos Colon and Invader just did in Puerto Rico. Vince isn't going to wrestle, but will have a surrogate. I presume HHH will wrestle. Right now the idea is Stephanie will be in the storyline though SummerSlam, but her presence will be toned down after SummerSlam so the focus is just on Vince and HHH. That all could change.

Based on the direction on television of late, this would make sense. It's also good to see so much long term planning being put into the main event of next year's show.

With that being said, who would have thought it possible that The Rock could conceivably return for a match at "The Showcase of the Immortals" and it would be with the backing of Vince against Triple H with control of WWE on the line? If you remember, Vince turned heel on "The Great One" at WrestleMania 2000, hitting him with a chair that allowed "The Game" to get the pin to retain his WWF championship.

We won't see something exactly like that here, of course, but the players could very well be the same.

Unless, of course, Brock Lesnar is used for this match, or even someone like CM Punk or John Cena. Either way, this story looks to culminate at WrestleMania with yet another power struggle coming to an end.
