Who was the top grossing actor of 2013? None other than The Rock

The Rock had a better 2013 than you did.

There is no actor in Hollywood who made more money for his work in film than Dwayne Johnson, known to us pro wrestling folks as The Rock. According to Forbes.com, "The Great One" pulled in $1.3 billion in gross revenue for his work on various projects, more than Robert Downey Jr., who came in second thanks to the wildly successful Iron Man 3.

From the report:

Iron Man was Downey's only movie of 2013, while Johnson had one huge film, Fast & Furious 6; one big fil, G.I. Joe: Retaliation; and two smaller films. Together they added up to $1.3 billion at the global box office.

With another Fast & Furious movie slated to hit theaters next summer, Johnson should have another banner year in 2014. He could do even better thanks to Hercules. The flim, about the mythological hero's life after he completes his famous 12 labors, has franchise potential written all over it. If it's also a big hit, Johnson's 2014 box office grosses should be huge.

One could argue, and I'm going to here, that 2013 is easily the best year of Johnson's career. When his ex-wife Danni took over handling his career, she put in place an initiative to have him return to pro wrestling to help boost his status in Tinseltown and vice versa. The idea, obviously, was that he would be far more successful in both ventures if a plan was put into place and executed properly.

Mission accomplished.

In addition to grossing $1.3 billion in film, Rock led the charge for WWE in the first and second quarter of its calendar. Royal Rumble (513,000 buys), Elimination Chamber (213,000 buys), and WrestleMania 29 (1.03 million buys) all did well on pay-per-view (PPV), far better than they would have in his absence.

What a year.
