No. 1 Contender's Tables Tag Team Match: Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara vs. Team Rhodes Scholars
The masked team of Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara take on the highest quality of homo sapiens in Team Rhodes Scholars (Cody Rhodes & Damien Sandow) in a No. 1 Contender's Tables Tag Team Match tonight at TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs.
The road to TLC
Both Mysterio & Sin Cara and Team Rhodes Scholars have been battling each other since the re-ignition of WWE's tag team division. The Rhodes Scholars defeated Mysterio & Sin Cara on the Oct. 22 episode of Monday Night Raw to become the No. 1 Contender's to the Tag Team Championship. They would go on to beat Team Hell No (Kane and Daniel Bryan) by disqualification at Hell in a Cell, although the belts did not change hands.
Team Rhodes Scholars did not receive a follow up opportunity against the champions. Cody Rhodes suffered a concussion and a shoulder injury facing Team Hell No, on the Nov. 14 episode of Main Event, forcing Sandow to search for a new apprentice, until Cody' return.
He did not have to look long though, before Cody Rhodes came back on the Dec. 10 episode of Monday Night Raw. That very night, the duo defeated The Usos, The Prime Time Players, and Primo & Epico in a Fatal Fourway Elimination Match to earn the right to reclaim the No 1 Contendership.
However, they have one last hurdle in their way, the team of Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara.
Although it has not been explained how Mysterio & Sin Cara earned their spot in this match, there is no doubt that they are quite deserving. The masked pair look like they have been partners for years, often complimenting each other's moves. They look to avenge their loss to Team Rhodes Scholars prior to Hell in a Cell.
What's at stake?
Team Rhodes Scholars have had one shot at the titles, but failed to take advantage. The road back to contention has not been an easy one. They had to fight their way from the bottom to get back into this position. These are opportunities that are hard to come by, and a loss tonight would place the pair at the bottom of the tag team pile.
For Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara, it is unknown exactly how long these two will have together to work as a single unit. Mysterio is on his last legs and is most likely in the twilight of his career. This could be his last chance to have gold around his waist. His partner Sin Cara, although a fresh mask to WWE, has yet to fully realize his potential. This could lead to his first taste of a title. Or, it could be just another moment of underachievement for the Mexican superstar.
