WWE Raw ratings (Jan. 2, 2017): Goldberg’s return helps viewership back over 3 million

After a holiday hangover lead to a drop on Dec. 26th, helping SmackDown beat Raw in the ratings for the first time in the new brand split era last week, the red brand promoted Goldberg’s first appearance since the Survivor Series fallout show and saw their viewership climb back above 3 million... 3,046,000, to be more precise.

A chunk of that audience didn’t stick around to actually see the WCW legend, who didn’t appear until the post-11PM Eastern main event overrun segment, but he was teased throughout the night and is the most logical explanation for an increase in interest, since the rest of the show featured more of the Kevin Owens/Chris Jericho/Roman Reigns/Seth Rollins program which has been a staple of Monday nights for the past month or more.

There was also a bit of a second hour surge, which might be attributable to the thrilling Rose Bowl game between Penn State and USC - which handily won the night with almost 16 million viewers - ending around 9:30PM Eastern.

Hour one: 3.04 million
Hour two: 3.16 million
Hour three: 2.94 million

Raw is bringing in Undertaker and Shawn Michaels for next week, and it’ll need them as it goes head-to-head with another college football juggernaught in the national title rematch of Alabama vs. Clemson. And that one won’t end halfway through WWE’s broadcast.
