It was the expected result and, in fact, the two involved basically admitted that this was the moment they had both been waiting for after three full years of promotion. Indeed, The Rock told John Cena that he came back to pro wrestling for the moments after he dropped the WWE championship to him in the main event of WrestleMania 29 last night (Sun., April 7, 2013) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
So they could shake hands and lay their feud to rest once and for all.
But that wasn't enough. It wasn't enough for the two to share a special moment in the ring in front of some 80,000 fans after an epic encounter on pay-per-view. No, "The Great One" also had to give "The Fruity One" his ringing endorsement before the broadcast closed.
And so it was (GIF via Zombie Prophet at Bloody Elbow):
Looking back on their entire program together, this was always the plan. The two just did enough business together at WrestleMania 28 that after it became clear The Rock would come back to work for WWE with an even more intense schedule than before, the decision was made to do the rematch.
So it was delayed a year and added the WWE championship but it was always going to happen.
