Match Times

The 9 matches combined for a total time of 1h 39m 00s. This means that 56.3% of the show was devoted to bell-to-bell action.

Here is the sorted list of match times for Slammiversary 2016.

  • 17m 03s: Drew Galloway vs Bobby Lashley
  • 16m 57s: Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy
  • 15m 02s: EC3 vs Mike Bennett
  • 10m 12s: Lee vs Edwards vs Everett vs DJ Z
  • 9m 20s: Decay vs BroMans
  • 8m 36s: Eli Drake vs Bram
  • 7m 35s: Jade vs Sienna vs Kim
  • 7m 34s: The Tribunal vs Grado and Shera
  • 6m 41s: James Storm vs Braxton Sutter

Pre-match Segments

The pre-match segments combined for a total time of 52m 36s, which is 29.9% of the show.

Here is the sorted list of pre-match segment time for all 9 matches.

  • 10m 06s: Jade vs Sienna vs Kim
  • 8m 01s: EC3 vs Mike Bennett
  • 6m 53s: Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy
  • 6m 01s: Drew Galloway vs Bobby Lashley

  • 4m 05s: Eli Drake vs Bram
  • 4m 04s: Decay vs BroMans
  • 2m 26s: The Tribunal vs Grado and Shera

3 matches received the special treatment of a dedicated video package right before entrances. The videos hyping Gail Kim's match (2m 18s), Bennett's match (2m 18s), and Hardy's match (2m 57s), combined to take up 7m 33s of the pre-match segment time.

The pre-match segment for Trevor Lee's match included a 1m 35s brawl before the bell officially rang to start the fight.

The pre-match segment for the Knockouts match included a talking segment in the arena between Maria, Allie, Gail, and Billy Corgan that lasted over 4 minutes.

Eli Drake, Mike Bennett, Matt Hardy, Decay, and Drew Galloway each had backstage interviews or promos shortly before their entrances.

The pre-match segment for Eli Drake’s match was briefly interrupted by a 0m 46s commercial hyping up the announcement of TNA’s next Hall of Fame inductee. Those 0m 46s were thrown into the Miscellaneous category because it had nothing to do with Drake’s match.

Post-match Segments

The post-match segments combined for a total time of 13m 51s, which is 7.9% of the show.

Here is the sorted list of the post-match segment time for all 9 matches.

  • 2m 23s: Drew Galloway vs Bobby Lashley
  • 2m 10s: Lee vs Edwards vs Everett vs DJ Z
  • 1m 52s: Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy
  • 1m 34s: James Storm vs Braxton Sutter
  • 1m 28s: EC3 vs Mike Bennett
  • 1m 25s: Jade vs Sienna vs Kim
  • 1m 17s: Eli Drake vs Bram
  • 0m 55s: The Tribunal vs Grado and Shera
  • 0m 47s: Decay vs BroMans

Miscellaneous Segments

That leaves about 5.9% (10m 26s) of the show for everything else. Most of these miscellaneous segments are crammed into the time after one post-match segment ends and before the next pre-match segment begins.

One reason why there was such a small percentage in this Miscellaneous category is because of the arrangement of the backstage interviews. 5 of the 9 matches included a backstage interview or promo immediately prior to entrances.

Sometimes these backstage interviews get thrown into the Miscellaneous category when they are placed in a part of the show that is not adjacent to the actual match.  This is exactly what happened on this show with separate backstage interviews featuring EC3 and Lashley that took place in the first hour.

But when these interviews occur right before entrances, I classify them as part of the pre-match segment.  This is what happened with backstage interviews featuring Drake, Bennett, Broken Matt, Decay, and Galloway.  Therefore those interviews were all counted as pre-match segment time.

As a result of this arrangement of backstage interviews, there were no Miscellaneous segments on this show for the final 1h 42m 08s of the event. TNA flowed right from the post-match segment of one match straight into the pre-match segment of the next match for that entire duration, without any unrelated segments in between. This is the most significant difference in structure that I noticed between this TNA pay-per-view (PPV) and the typical WWE PPV.

Summary

Here is a listing of how much total show time was allocated for each match when you add up all 3 components: pre-match time, match time, and post-match time.

  • 25m 42s: Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy
  • 25m 27s: Drew Galloway vs Bobby Lashley
  • 24m 31s: EC3 vs Mike Bennett
  • 19m 06s: Jade vs Sienna vs Kim
  • 18m 04s: Lee vs Edwards vs Everett vs DJ Z
  • 14m 11s: Decay vs BroMans
  • 13m 58s: Eli Drake vs Bram
  • 13m 33s: James Storm vs Braxton Sutter
  • 10m 55s: The Tribunal vs Grado and Shera

Now here is a look at the "Match Time Percentage" for each match. For any given match, this percentage shows how the match time compares to the combined pre-match and post-match segment time.

(Here's an example calculation: an entry with a match time of 6m 00s, pre-match time of 3m 00s, and a post-match time of 1m 00s has a score of 60.0%, because the match time of 6m 00s is 60% of the total sum of 10m 00s for all three components.)

  • 69.3%: The Tribunal vs Grado and Shera
  • 67.0%: Drew Galloway vs Bobby Lashley
  • 66.0%: Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy
  • 65.8%: Decay vs BroMans
  • 61.6%: Eli Drake vs Bram
  • 61.3%: EC3 vs Mike Bennett
  • 56.5%: Lee vs Edwards vs Everett vs DJ Z
  • 49.3%: James Storm vs Braxton Sutter
  • 39.7%: Jade vs Sienna vs Kim

I have collected timing data on 46 WWE PPV events since the start of 2013; the timing component percentages for those shows collectively are: 23.0% pre-match segment time, 53.7% match time, 9.7% post-match segment time, and 13.6% miscellaneous segment time. In comparison to those numbers, TNA Slammiversary 2016 pumped up its pre-match segments and match time, while significantly cutting down on miscellaneous segments.

This 3-hour card also crammed in 9 full matches, which WWE has never done on any of the 3-hour WWE PPVs in my data set. WWE did include 9 matches at Money in the Bank 2016, but that show lasted 3h 23m 52s, and one of those matches was a 0m 08s MITB cash-in.

The trade-off for including 9 full matches in under 3 hours is that 5 of the matches at Slammiversary 2016 were less than 10 minutes in length.
