According to a report from the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), TNA made a "big play" for the services of free agent former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio this past week. The report indicates that Mysterio is still likely to sign a deal with Lucha Underground but because nothing is official, Dixie Carter and her crew reached out in what appears to be a desperate attempt to bring him into the fold.
The reported particulars of the deal Carter was pushing:
- TNA could Mysterio's merchandise into all stores.
- They could open doors for him into the TV and movie world.
- Impact would be built around Mysterio as its major Mexican star.
- He could work anywhere he wants on his off days.
The top priority for TNA right now is ratings, considering Destination America is reportedly planning to cancel all of its programming at the end of September. Bringing a major star to the company and hoping he brings enough viewers with him for a stay of execution is, as Michael Cole might say, vintage TNA.
Just don't expect it to work.
