Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins being rumoured to be TNA's mystery potential buyer

The latest potentially BS rumor that is running rampant on the grapple-vine is that the frontman of the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, is the mystery potential buyer of TNA. However, earlier today Dave Meltzer debunked this story.

The latest potentially BS rumor that is running rampant on the grapple-vine is that the frontman of the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, is the mystery potential buyer of TNA that we reported about a few days ago.

As a suggestion to the lead face behind the unknown investor group, it is certainly a plausible one, given that Corgan is a huge pro wrestling fan and has been involved in angles for both ECW and AAA in the past.

In the dying days of ECW, Paul Heyman even took Corgan out for lunch and offered him a 10% share of ECW for $1 million, only to get knocked back with the blunt response that "Paul, the company is not worth $10 million, I can do fucking math".

In the last couple of years, he's also run a handful of independent wrestling events in Chicago under the banner Resistance Pro Wrestling.

A lot of the less reputable wrestling sites on the Internet have ran with the gossip of Corgan being the lead candidate to purchase TNA.

Justin Labar of WrestleZone.com was the first to link Corgan's name to the sale of TNA:

"As a follow-up to our report earlier today about a certain individual seriously interested in the sale of TNA, WrestleZone can now reveal that Billy Corgan is one name coming up a lot right now....

One current TNA star and two former stars have all verified that Corgan's name is making the circles behind the scenes in TNA. While no concrete details are available at this time, and no public statements have been made by either party regarding this possibility, current water cooler talk in TNA is pointing to Corgan as a potential candidate."

Brett Clendial of wrestlechat.net went further, saying that the company was his for the taking if he so desired:

"I broke the news earlier tonight on the NAWC podcast that, according to two high-placed TNA sources with knowledge of the ongoing negotiations, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is currently the leading candidate to purchase TNA Wrestling.  Wrestlezone’s Justin Labar speculated on Corgan being rumored earlier today, but could not confirm it.  However, according to the two sources that I spoke with within the last hour, talks with Corgan have reached a "significant stage" and the deal is "his for the taking" if he wants it."

Then, Brett Buchanan of AlternativeNation.net claimed that Corgan buying TNA was a done deal:

"I have heard from a second hand source who is close to a key figure in the rumored TNA Wrestling sales discussions who has verified that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is far along in his talks to purchase the company. This source went as far to say that he believes it is a "done deal" that Corgan will buy TNA, though the source didn’t know what percentage Corgan will be purchasing or the specifics of the deal. The source also says that Corgan has recently made a connection to somebody very wealthy, though it is not known if this party would have anything to do with the deal."

Around the same time, former ECW performer and WWE office worker, Lou D'Angeli, aka Sign Guy Dudley and Lou E. Dangerously, seemingly confirmed the stories on Twitter:

"Yes! From what I understand is in negotiations to buy ! I don't know anything else but he was in Nashville last week!

Is set on buying ??? I know he is pretty serious in at least partial, if not, majority ownership. "

So we've found our mystery man then, right, Cagesiders?

Wrong, as Dave Meltzer has just debunked the story in his daily news update:

"We do know that Corgan was not the leading candidate to get the company as of a few days ago."

So the guessing game continues!
