While talking about finishing up his latest run in WWE on a recent edition of Talk is Jericho on Podcast One, Chris Jericho revealed that working with Randy Orton at the Night of Champions pay-per-view (PPV) this past Sunday night in Nashville wasn't originally the plan.

Instead, he was supposed to work with Seth Rollins until Vince McMahon, of course, changed his mind:

"Night of Champions, had a great match with Randy Orton. I really feel like the last couple weeks, between the cage match with Bray Wyatt and the match with Randy Orton at Night of Champions, were two of my best matches that I had on this run coming back. Always great to steal the show, and we did steal the show. Originally, I was supposed to work with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions. Vince changed it to Randy Orton and we had a really, really cool great chemistry. I love how he works. He's such a careful worker. His timing is immaculate, his selling is great. He's very over, he's got a lot of moves that are over so it really makes it a big difference to be in the ring with a pro like that. And we had a great finish, I really enjoyed it. You know, it's funny to hear some people go 'oh, it's so obvious that you were going to jump off the top rope and get RKO'd'. Yeah, sure, that's exactly what you all were thinking. I really don't buy that. Of course it happens, so you're like 'see, I told ya!' But I think when you're watching the match and the way that we built it and the way that it was, I think that was a great finish, a great surprise, and a great way for me to end my WWE run."

As noted, it worked out well in the end. Jericho vs. Orton was a strong match on a solid show, Rollins was left to brawl with the returning Dean Ambrose, and everyone went home happy.

Jericho would go on to say that he'll almost surely be back in WWE one day, and maybe even sooner than we think. Perhaps those rumors of a return for WrestleMania season early next year will ring true?

Stay tuned.

Brock Lesnar is a mammoth of a man, some 300 pounds of muscle and beef that makes him exactly the kind of physical specimen that puts dollar signs dancing in front of Vince McMahon's eyes. He's so big, however, that when he wrestles, he sweats profusely and his skin turns an alarming shade of purple.

Our own Hulk Holland expressed concern over this and wondered if there wasn't an underlying issue. Lesnar, after all, doesn't have the best track record regarding his health.

Lesnar returned for a match with Cena at Night of Champions just this past Sunday night and, once again, he was changing colors and looking generally unwell. Because of this, more articles were written openly wondering whether or not he's sick and in need of immediate medical care. Some even went so far as to suggest that he missed Monday Night Raw this week due to whatever health problem he may be having.

The Washington Post ran a story on as much and WWE was quick to release a statement denying the rumors that anything is wrong with the WWE world heavyweight champion:

Concerned fans are getting worked up for nothing, however, WWE officials say. Via an e-mailed statement to The Washington Post, the WWE contends, there is "no truth to the rumors about issues with Brock Lesnar's health." The company did not offer an alternative explanation as to why Lesnar did not appear.

PW Insider had previously noted that Lesnar was never scheduled for Raw this week because he's still under a contract that only requires him to work a limited number of dates per year. He may or may not be booked for Hell in a Cell, the next pay-per-view on the schedule, but as of right now it doesn't appear he's set for any show anytime soon.

So, despite the fact that he looks like a purple balloon ready to burst at any moment during his matches, apparently Lesnar is just fine.

Brock Lesnar is still the WWE world heavyweight champion following last night's Night of Champions pay-per-view (PPV) at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
Tonight, WWE will run the FedEx Forum in Memphis for its live episode of Monday Night Raw on USA.

And, according to a report from PW Insider, Lesnar won't be there.

Indeed, The Beast reportedly flew home this morning and will not make an appearance at the show, at least not live and in the building. It's possible, of course, that WWE could have a pre-tape interview done that will air at some point over the three-hour broadcast. That or Paul Heyman will simply do what he does best and speak for his client while Brock hangs out at home.

Cushy gig, huh?

Considering Lesnar is still the WWE world heavyweight champion it will be most interesting to see what his upcoming schedule looks like.

At some point or another it was decided that the finish to the Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena rematch at Night of Champions on Sept. 21, 2014, in Nashville, Tennessee would feature a run-in from Seth Rollins. It was also decided that Lesnar, vulnerable thanks to Cena spamming finishers for the last 10 minutes of the match, would get Curb Stomped.

And he was really, really good at getting Curb Stomped.

Lesnar is the perfect pro wrestler. He's a monster who moves gracefully. Despite his general lack of passion and reverence for the industry, he's exceedingly good at everything involved with operating within it (outside of speaking, of course, and even then he's good in a pre-taped setting).

It's unlikely we'll ever see a Rollins vs. Lesnar match but wouldn't you be intrigued by the prospect? Rollins' speed and technical ability matching up with Lesnar's power and ferocity sounds like a recipe for a solid "B" show pay-per-view.

Speculation, partially driven by the lack of any real innovation in character or moveset and lackluster reviews of his matches during this latest return, has been that this could be the end of the road for Y2J. A bestselling author, successful rock 'n' roll frontman and podcast host, the 43 year old legend probably doesn't need to be taking bumps to make his mortgage these days.

But, preceding and lending weight to his Twitter comments, it was on his podcast Talk is Jericho last week that he told listeners that his return to WWE would be "sooner than you think".

Is that a good thing?

I'm a Jericholic. I have enjoyed this latest run while acknowldeging that it didn't set the world on fire or anything. I'll watch him do just about anything, and that includes more pro wrestling.

But I'll admit that some of my initial fears from his appearance on the July 1st Raw - that age was creeping up on him, that his storylines for the summer didn't seem particularly well thought out - came true over the last three months. His ring work, especially the first couple of matches with Bray Wyatt, was rusty and he just seemed to be shaking that off in the last few weeks. His feuds - a rehash of John Cena's issues with Wyatt and a slapped together issue with Orton based more on ancient history than anything we've seen on screen this decade - were nothing special.

Ever the professional, Jericho returned because WWE needed a solid hand who could get a reliable babyface reaction when Daniel Bryan went on the shelf. That demonstrates his approach to the business as much as his oft-stated desire to be making new stars at this stage of his career. While I applaud him for that and think it was fun to have him back for a few months, I hope that the next time we see him, he and Creative have put a lot more thought into his role.

Love, hate, or just "eh, what did you expect?" it, the end of last night (September 21, 2014)'s Night of Champions pay-per-view (PPV) left WWE Creative with a lot of possible directions in which to take the players involved in the finish.

In an after-show interview, now up exclusively at WWE.com, the man who came up just short of beating WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar after interference by Mr. Money in the Bank Seth Rollins kept all of those directions alive. John Cena's first order of business was to put over the man who has left his last two battles with him not only standing tall, but carrying the most prestigious belt in all of pro wrestling:

What are you going to do? What the hell can I say? So close. A second felt like a year out there. A match with Brock is different than anything and I know what it's like to come out on the losing end.

His most pointed comments for Rollins himself. Cena was somewhat self-deprecating, referencing his failed cash-in against CM Punk in 2012. More importantly though, his critique of the Architect's actions could be read as set-up for issues between Cena and Rollins, Lesnar and Rollins, or both:

I don't think Seth Rollins has any idea how foolish he is. I've told him face-to-face, I'll give him first dibs at a championship shot but he doesn't know what pinning Brock Lesnar is all about. And that is the stupidest, stupidest decision I have ever seen with anyone with that briefcase, and I rank pretty high in that category, so.

Will this be the last time we see Cena challenge Lesnar for the title? The man known for never giving up didn't call for a rematch as he did after a night off in August, but he didn't sound like he was giving up the chase either:

But, you know, a good athlete, a good coach doesn't blame anybody. I didn't get it done today, bottom line. I didn't get it done. I was close, and I was a lot closer and I guess in that sort of category you measure improvement not necessarily by getting your hand raised but by a better performance. It's so much tougher than SummerSlam. I lost at SummerSlam. I won by disqualification tonight, that's... that's tough.

The interview capped an evening of Cena being Cena, in all the ways that his fans love and his detractors loathe.

Now that you've had time to digest what they did, what direction do you want to see WWE go in with the main belt, and the three men involved in last night's finish?

Well, that happened, and let's unpack it.

WWE returned to pay-per-view (PPV) -- WWE Network for most of us -- last night (Sun., Sept. 21, 2014) with its Night of Champions event at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee featuring a show that was fun for the wrestling in the ring but saw a main event finish that has fans up in arms.

________________________________________

I HATE THIS ... well, maybe not ... NO, YES I DO ... actually, this was the right call, maybe

First, the bare bones: In the main event of Night of Champions, John Cena defeated Brock Lesnar by disqualification because Seth Rollins ran in and attacked Cena. This means that while Cena was victorious, Lesnar remains the WWE world heavyweight champion. Rollins attempted to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Lesnar after his attack but was thwarted by Cena, who ran him off before taking an F-5 as the show went off the air with Lesnar's music playing, the belt still in his (death) clutch.

There's so much to unpack here.

The story going into this match, as told on the go-home show, was that Cena was going to have a chance in the rematch -- something he didn't have in their encounter at SummerSlam -- as long as he could exploit the openings, however small they may be. And, once he took advantage of as much, he couldn't let up. He needed to get the upper hand and once he did, he had to finish the job at all costs.

That's more or less how the match played out. He took another beating, sure, but when he found his opening, he mashed the gas pedal and didn't stop until he ran into a brick wall in the form of a Money in the Bank briefcase.

Lesnar, for his part, took a beating of his own. He got to give one last month and now it was his turn to take one. And he took it. He kicked out of every AA -- and there were four -- except for the last one, and even then you could argue he was getting his shoulder up.

Upon replay, it appears at least possible that Lesnar is rolling to get his shoulder up before the referee would have hypothetically counted to three. It's entirely possible this wasn't on purpose but if it was -- and that's a big if -- it was brilliant. This is a man who had taken four AA's and sat in the STF submission for an extended period on more than one occasion, and he still managed to roll to get his shoulder up.

He was, quite literally, unstoppable.

But Cena can always argue, or at least believe in his mind and, by extension, all his fans can believe in their minds, that he was going to win the match before Rollins came in and ruined it. Because we can't know for sure either way and that's undoubtedly the ambiguity WWE was hoping for.

Both can argue their side and neither will be wrong. Neither will be right, of course, but neither will be wrong and this match was all about making sure of those two things.

As for Rollins, his appearance was somewhat more problematic. We have to question why he would run in here, and on the surface it's simple: He wanted to take advantage of Cena's hard work. Lesnar was vulnerable, so he ran in to capitalize on that.

The problem is he didn't act that way. What he did was run out, attack Cena, and once Cena was disposed of, he turned slowly to Brock and you could almost see the light bulb going off over his head.

That doesn't make any sense in any way here, at least not with the information we currently have available to us. He had remarked weeks ago on Raw that he wanted Cena in this match so he could take advantage of an opportunity that may present itself. That's what this was but, again, he didn't act that way from the outset. He presented himself like he wanted to attack Cena and the cash-in attempt was secondary after he realized he might actually be able to pull it off.

(Editor's note: I wanted to put a comment from the comments section below here because it does a great job of explaining Rollins running in from a viewpoint I hadn't considered or outright forgot about: "Remember why Brock was placed in the championship match in the first place. The Authority didn't want Cena to win the belt, so naturally, they would have a plan B if it looked like Brock was in trouble. Rollins was following orders, and it was only then, that he realized that he had a chance to cash in the brief case to make Daddy (Triple H) proud." Props to Cagesider Hollywood Rock for that. Great observation. This could very well mean that Lesnar's shoulder going up was on purpose and this can start a rift with The Authority over not having enough confidence in him and sending Rollins out. Or any other number of possibilities for the story. Again, great observation that I overlooked.)

Back to Lesnar: He then took a Curb Stomp -- better than anyone in the history of the Curb Stomp, I might add -- and was quite clearly all but finished. At this point, can we blame him? He's a beast, yeah, but consider the damage he incurred here. The reaction on Twitter I was exposed to the most revolved around disappointment that Brock didn't look strong enough but are we really asking that he eat that many finishers from Cena, and one from Rollins, and just no sell it?

That's not "he beat the streak, he should be untouchable", folks. That's the kind of thing that would kill the business. It's unrealistic to the point of downright blasphemy.

Let's also not forget that Cena is, without question, whether you want to cop to it or not, a legend in the industry. He is one of the greatest of all time. Lesnar took his best shot, something like six times over, and he still didn't lose. He may have come incredibly close, but he didn't.

And Cena, that legend he is, came that close to winning a match he was never going to win.

I won't argue that the finish was disappointing. Any finish that isn't clean will always leave you feeling like you invested in a story that didn't get a proper payoff. But I will at least attempt to see the forest through the trees and realize that WWE was quite obviously attempting to serve many, many masters here.

All told, when considering everything they had to consider, this may have been the best they could come up with. It didn't have anywhere near the impact the SummerSlam match did, but it set up the future quite well.

And, hey, Brock Lesnar is still the WWE world heavyweight champion. We'll forget this finish soon enough and he'll still have the title while Cena is chasing Rollins around before moving on to some dumb feud with Rusev.

Let's just take this as a win and move on, shall we?

Grade: B-

All the rest:

Dean Ambrose finally came home and it was just as glorious as we could have imagined. I was somewhat disappointed that we didn't get the pop of his music hitting before we saw him show up but would it be Ambrose if he did it the way everyone else does? Also missed an opportunity to climb out of the trunk of the taxi instead of the backseat, but whatever. His aplomb, his passion, his fierce determination is everything right about pro wrestling. It took a billion security guards, agents, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Seth Rollins, zip ties, and a sneak attack to get him out of there and he was STILL kicking and fighting. He's perfect.

The Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton match was really great for what it was but it absolutely suffered for the fact that it was sorely lacking a real story attached to it. There was no real issue here. Still, this was two main event level players working a WWE style main event level match, and it worked.

The Divas championship triple threat match was shockingly good, considering the low expectations brought on not by the fact that it was a Divas match and they typically underwhelm but because it was a triple threat and that's a gimmick match that rarely works. This worked in every way it could. Somewhat surprising: Nikki Bella was treated as window dressing while Paige and AJ battled for the belt. So for everyone who felt like she shouldn't have been anywhere near this match, this went about as well as it could have. She deserves a ton of credit for that back bump from the apron to the outside at the finish. That was sick.

That Brie Bella promo featured her delivering her lines properly and then smiling that George Bush smile he always gave after he managed to avoid botching his speeches and looked so very pleased with himself for it. I can get into Brie, the wrestler, but I would rather listen to that annoying Fred idiot John Cena played the dad for that one time than listen to Brie speak again.

Mark Henry crying during the National Anthem was mocked mercilessly on social media and that sucks because this is the pro wrestler we need, people. We need the guy who is so very good at the story he's telling that OF COURSE he would break down in tears at the national anthem when he was getting the chance to defend his country one more time after his previous failures. I won't mock the guy staying true to the story he's telling. Save that for those who deserve the ridicule.

Putting the Intercontinental title on The Miz was the right call here because he's doing his best work since 2010 and they can really get some mileage out of this stunt double gimmick with Damien Mizdow. As noted to me on Twitter (shout out to whoever sent it in), Mizdow will hopefully come out on Raw tonight sporting a replica Intercontinental title.

(This is where a negative comment about Florida Georgia Line's involvement in this PPV would appear.)

Sheamus vs. Cesaro was a fine match, one that probably won't get the credit it deserves because, again, WWE has failed so miserably at telling compelling stories for the various characters it has involved in feuds right now. This was just a hoss fight, two stiff workers working stiff and telling a story within their match. Cesaro had the answer for Sheamus every time until he didn't, and that's what it took.

I'm glad Stardust found the cosmic key, and happy The Usos gave him and Goldust a good match en route to dropping the tag team titles. This was long overdue and should inject some much needed life into a division that has been lacking since The Shield broke up. Here's to hoping for something creepy, and weird, and cool.

This show featured a lot of good wrestling that suffered for not having good stories attached to the matches. If the finish in the main event didn't infuriate you -- like it didn't for me -- this was a fine show.

That's it from me, Cagesiders. Now it's your turn to sound off in the comments section below with all your thoughts on last night's show. How did you like it, if you liked it at all?

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact, it's just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

It's being said that Dean Ambrose was always going to return last night to attack Seth Rollins and it was just a matter of how they would get there. Roman Reigns having emergency surgery, while incredibly unfortunate, paved the way for the version of events we saw last night. There was even a script written up before the Reigns' surgery that had the match never taking place, according to the Observer.

Regarding WWE claiming Reigns could be out for "several months", that appears to be an overexaggeration to play up his returning sooner than that. They're expecting him back in about a month.

The big announcement WWE has been teasing for Raw tonight, which has included Sting tweeting about it, is something for the WWE 2K15 video game as opposed to anything to do with NXT talent being called up. That said, NXT wrestlers are still scheduled to work the show.

TNA may be announcing a new television deal sometime over the next week. That's been said before, of course, but that's the current word going around.

Gail Kim's contract with TNA is apparently expiring soon and she may not be brought back.
