When WWE announced it had just over 667,000 subscribers for the WWE Network following WrestleMania 30 on April 7, 2014, the number was considered a big disappointment and fell short of most expectations. In the more than month since then, a new television deal has been struck -- one the company admitted was greatly affected by the Network launching -- and because the rights fee didn't double as Vince McMahon promised, the stock has bombed, leading to investigations and investors calling for Vince's head.

In short, the company is a mess behind-the-scenes right now.

It could get a whole lot worse if the Network, which, due to start up costs, is going to equal WWE losing around $50 million this year, doesn't gain subscribers at a faster rate than has so far.

Well, we're now roughly three months into the first billing cycle and that's enough time to take a survey of the large number of you Cagesiders who ordered. After seeing everything it has to offer, are you planning on renewing your subscription at the end of the six months you committed to?

It took a while -- if you can classify a couple months as "a while" -- but the WWE Network is finally available on the Xbox One entertainment system. It was quietly added on Tuesday but WWE issues a press release today pushing as much.

Wow.

Earlier today (April 7, 2014), one day after a financially successful WrestleMania 30 pay-per-view (PPV) event took the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, by storm, WWE announced its current number of subscribers to the hugely ambitious WWE Network.

667,287.

That's a big, big number but not nearly as big as many expected. In fact, most expected that the combination of free trials offered, WrestleMania 30, and the low price point would draw 1 million subscribers. After all, if WrestleMania costs upwards of $70 to order via traditional PPV and fans could simply subscribe to the Network to get six months of PPV shows for that price, why not order?

There will be growth, of course, but the announcement of the first wave of subscribers led to a big drop in stock. After an incredibly successful first quarter thanks to hype for the Network and the pending television rights deal, the price dropped some 19-percent today.

As of this writing (via Google Finance):

Awash in positive feedback about content and feeling good about their technological capabilities, WWE is set to end their one week free trial promotion for The Network, just in time to ensure that everyone has to pay for the biggest show in their history.

Since its launch on February 24th, The WWE Network has offered a one-week free trial of the over-the-top streaming service. The idea was two-fold: give users a chance to sample the service while they hopefully get hooked on the programming and overcome jitters about the new technology, video quality and the other concerns consumers have about a brand new product.

With positive early reviews and confidence running high in their ability to handle high-volumes of traffic, the free trial's purpose has been met, at least for now. As such, WWE has announced that the last day to sign-up and get a free week of The Network is this upcoming Saturday, March 22nd.

Astute calendar watchers will also realize that by having all free trials expire by March 29th (seven days from this Saturday), WWE ensures that all Network viewers of WrestleMania 30 will be paying customers. Between this move and scheduling the first day of service for after Elimination Chamber, the company has made sure that they are not giving away any pay-per-view (PPV) events.

You can get still get a deal on WrestleMania and subsequent Sunday shows like Extreme Rules and Money in the Bank by committing to $9.99 per month for six months rather than the $50 - $70 per show you'd pay by going through you cable and satellite provider. But you won't be getting them legally for free.

If you're still unsure of how to sign-up for The Network, never fear. The Bellas are here to walk you through in this video that also announces the end of the free trial promotion.

If the last week taught WWE anything, it's that there are going to be issues as The Network launches and they transition their business model. In order to address those issues without antagonizing their customers, they need to do some company-wide service training.

A week into the launch of the WWE Network, the benefits and shortcomings of the revolutionary over-the-top service are pretty well established, at least as it stands now.

Here at Cageside Seats, we've been following the updates from the company on their technical issues, have had folks chime in on their experience with tech support, and reported on rumors of the company's response to more traditional challenges such as the over-selling of tickets to NXT ArRIVAL.

A recent interaction I had with WWE Shop trying to get some shipping information on an order I placed got me thinking about a crucial area the Stamford-based company should be investing in at this critical time in their history. But first, a little story-time with Uncle Sean...

Back in the dark ages / my college years, I had an internship with General Motors. When you're a marketing major working for GM in Texas, that either means trucks or Cadillacs. From a private school in Dallas - we got Caddies.

Cadillac in Big D means Carl Sewell. Mr. Sewell turned his Dallas dealership into the second largest in the United States (and the Sewell Automotive Group) with a fanatical devotion to "the customer is always right", luxury-levels of service. He wrote a book on it that was a pretty big deal in business circles during the 90s called Customers for Life.

The basic idea is that it doesn't matter what you're selling, if you make your customers feel like they have a say and that their every interaction with the company is designed to take care of them, those customers will be devoted to you.

If you could use this model to grow a business selling the lemon-riffic GM cars of the 1980s, you can use it to sell just about anything.

Now obviously, WWE is in a unique position as an entertainment company. The culture of the pro wrestling business involves withholding information from customers - and almost all of their customers love that about pro wrestling. They should give us what we want from their stories, but maybe not right when we want it.

But most of what we discuss and debate on this website and others across the web are focused on what WWE should do with their characters and narratives. That's always going to subjective, opinions being like assholes and what not.

What can't be subjective is the experience that customers have with your company and services.

No one should call tech support and be told that resources have been "exhausted", especially after being disconnected twice. No one who spent two hours trying to purchase your product wants to hear how one of your partners wasn't ready for it to be so busy (it's not called The MLB Advanced Media Wrestling Network). No one affiliated with your company should be yelling at customers holding a ticket for an event to which they can't gain admission. And when someone calls for tracking information on a shipment, a representative shouldn't tell them "you should have it" without being able to provide further details.

There are going to be hiccups in a major technology launch. When the product being launched involves offering up a lot of new content, employees are going to be stretched thin and nerves will be frayed. When the content you provide is predicated on misdirecting your audience, your fans are sometimes going to view the company as an adversary.

For these reasons, it should have been apparent to WWE that a major internal effort to train employees company-wide on best practices of customer service be undertaken prior to the Network launch.

Customers, especially those as invested in the product as wrestling fans, will forgive a lot if they are being treated with understanding and respect. As Carl Sewell preaches, an irate consumer can be turned into a "customer for life" if the first person they raise their issue to listens and is empowered to address the problem, or at least follows up on matters they can't initially resolve.

No matter how exemplary a job WWE's technical, logistics, production and creative teams do over the next few months, there are going to be issues and unhappy customers. How every member of the organization relates to them will be crucial.

The McMahons and the public faces of their company are always telling us how important we in the "WWE Universe" are. When it comes to taking our money in exchange for goods and services, they need to be sure that all of their employees are showing us how important we are.

If you have been attempting to use the WWE Network on your XBox and have been having trouble, here's some (potentially) good news for you.

After a rocky launch day, the WWE Network has improved by leaps and bounds in the four days since the over-the-top service went live. The live stream has been outstanding, save for some hiccups during last night's (Feb. 27, 2014) NXT ArRIVAL event, and the video on demand streaming issues have largely been worked out on most devices.

XBox live users, however, have been having a ton of issues logging in to utilize the service. Quite frankly, it's been a disaster and the folks at WWE Network know this and want to let you know that the problem will be resolved soon enough.

The statement released today:

Thank you for signing up for WWE Network. We are working aggressively to address the login issue for Xbox users and expect to have it resolved by this Monday, March 3, if not sooner. You will be notified via email as soon as this issue is fixed. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

In the meantime, please enjoy watching WWE Network on WWE.com, tablets, mobile phones or other connected devices.

So if you're still having problems come next Monday, you may want to reach out to a customer service representative.

Then again, maybe that wouldn't work out so well for you either.

The benefits are pretty apparent. The launch glitches were largely understandable. Here's one glutton's list of demand to make a good product a great one.

I haven't had a ton of time to mess around with the barely twenty-four hours old WWE Network.

My 9AM Eastern sign-up experience was pretty much what you've heard about around our site and around the web. I spent about an hour and a half banging my head against a cyber-wall that didn't even want to take my credit card information. I was expecting trouble, but thought I'd get through quicker since I was reading about other Cagesiders who had. But my goal was to be signed up by ArRival, so I had plenty of time.

Just before 4PM, I had a spare minute and decided to try again. Completely smooth sailing - less than five minutes from first click to watching the beautiful-in-its-simplicity interface come up on my screen.

I got sucked into the in-progress live stream by Bret Hart talking about how a motivational call from Vince McMahon following his 2002 stroke was a turning point in not only his relationship with WWE but also his life. Seriously, Bret Hart's life is the greatest story pro wrestling has ever created, and it's (mostly) a total shoot.

But I'd seen this before, and it wasn't giving me a chance to test out any functionality. It took me a second to figure out the pay-per-view (PPV) interface - the drop down for the year elluded me for several minutes

which ended up helping me in my decision to punch up last year's version of the very event that they promoted this past weekend in Minnesota. Fresh off a reminder of how much I enjoy the Chamber concept and jonesing for some Shield six-man action, I traveled back to a time when my man Rocky was WWE champ, and his match with John Cena had only happened Once in a Lifetime.

(Another reason that Elimination Chamber 2013 is an excellent viewing option...the promo package for the United States championship match includes this.)

Later on, I updated the App on my Android phone and was pleased to find that it instantly recognized my new credentials. It takes a while to load, and wants to check my location each time I start it up, but the playback is solid and it looks like most of the functionality is there.

One thing that I noticed is that "Search" on the App doesn't seem to be on par with the PC and streaming device versions. For instance, a search for Terry Funk came back with no results on my phone, whereas in the other two places, I got more than five pages of options.

What little I caught of the pre-show for Raw was actually on my phone, so it definitely works as a stop-gap for the live programming. In fact, it seems to default to a full-screen version of the live feed when you access WWEN via the App. That may be a setting I haven't found yet, though. I was able to turn off push notification, which I recommend if you don't want alerts on your phone every time a new show starts on the live stream.

Finally, I got home and plopped my happy ass on the couch and fired up my Roku. Pleased to report that this was again easy-peasy. I had to add the channel, which was front and center in the new section of Roku's channel store. Entered my login info and I was taken to, as near as I can tell, an almost identical interface as what I get on the PC browser version.

I played around a little with search, watched part of the very first WrestleMania, because that's what I promised my inner 12 year old I would do, and flipped over to Raw. I did keep an eye on the post-show while podcasting with the boss and my main man Matt Roth, and everything looked to be playing smoothly during what, presumably, was a high traffic time.

So, after a not unexpectedly rocky start, I'm pleased with my purchase so far. But as a guy who writes stuff on the internet, you know I have some complaints. Well, not even complaints so much as enhancements I'd like to see prioritized for the next waves of development:

The ability to save your progress in a show between log-ins or across devices. I can do this with every other streaming service I use - HBO Go, NetFlix, Hulu. They'll follow my login and allow me to pick up viewing a show at a new time or on a device. They also remember what I've watched and, if I'm watching a series in sequence, where I left off. I don't see that functionality yet from WWE Network. Especially as they develop more original programming for the service, I hope to see it come along.

Favorites, recommendations and viewing lists. I understand that they probably don't have the database of viewing patterns yet to provide "you watched this, so we think you'd like this" Amazon-style suggestions yet. But a good way to build toward that would be to allow me to like, or favorite, or rate the shows I watch. A wish list of shows that I want to watch in the future so I don't have to search for them again would be a great ease-of-use feature as well.

Social media integration. This was hyped as a major selling point at launch. At this point, it's very basic - just links to Twitter, Facebook and email with a system generated message. I'm not sure I want to spend time on a WWE.com message board arguing about Halloween Havoc '96, but I won't know until they give me the option. It would be cool to see some innovation here, with Network-sponsored watch groups, or the ability to form contact circles of fans with similar interests. Obvious groupings like ECW fans come to mind, but this could be the chance for niche groups like Mike Tenay marks to come together.

Better navigation within shows. Some shows have no chapter breaks or segments at all, and you have to hunt and peck through a long progress bar to try to find what you're looking for. Others (including a lot of the results when you search for an individual performer) take you to "moments" within shows.
