It's finally time to unify the WWE and world heavyweight championship titles. It happens tonight -- or so they say -- at the WWE "TLC" pay-per-view in Houstonin the John Cena vs. Randy Orton main event match.

WWE/WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE UNIFICATION TABLES, LADDERS, AND CHAIRS MATCH

John Cena vs. Randy Orton

They are the two biggest stars on the WWE roster, or at least that's the party line. They are the two champions. They are the ones who will unify the two major titles in what could very well be their 639th meeting at tonight's (Sun., Dec. 15, 2013) TLC pay-per-view (PPV) event at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. For that reason, it's somewhat fitting, but if nothing else the two most important titles in history will be hanging above the ring with a ladder somewhere close to make history.

The Road to TLC

It's been a short one.

After Orton successfully defended the WWE championship at Survivor Series last month with some assistance from The Authority, Cena hit the scene and a staredown took place with both wrestlers holding their titles high up in the air.

The implication was clear, we just needed confirmation.

That came the next night on Raw when Cena officially laid down the challenge. Orton was resistant but Triple H took the lead dog role and decided it was a grand idea. And so the match was made, for the main event of the TLC PPV with that very gimmick attached to it.

But what belt was on the line?

The answer didn't come until the next week when it was made clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that WWE had unification in mind. It was stated repeatedly that there will only be one champion coming out of this show. The brand extension is a relic to be laid to rest.

It's time to crown just one "Champion of Champions", as WWE came to call it.

There were two more segments on the way to tonight's match. In the first, the two brawled using tables, ladders, and chairs in a preview of what's to come later on this evening. In the second, they both cut amazing promos hyping the showdown.

Now it's here.

What's at Stake?

Only the title of undisputed champion. That's all, not a big deal, really.

There's still some doubt regarding whether or not one belt will cease to exist after the show, so it's hard to know for certain exactly what is at stake. We can only go off what we're being told and what we're being told is there will only be one champion when the lights go out at the Toyota Center and that's enough to get the blood pumping.

Plus, the winner will be the champion heading into the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania season.

Giggity.

Tonight, Big E Langston faces the biggest challenge of his short Intercontinental Championship reign so far, as he goes against the failed Money In The Bank briefcase casher in Damien Sandow. Will his path of destruction continue at TLC tonight?

WWE Intercontinental Championship

Big E Langston (c) vs. Damien Sandow

If the WWE and World Heavyweight Titles do indeed get unified tonight, then the Intercontinental Championship will once again be the second most prestigious belt in the company, a spot it held from its inception in September 1979 for 23 years until the big gold belt was brought back to be Raw brand's top prize.

Thus, this hastily put together match may have greater significance with the benefit of hindsight, as the winner may face stiffer main event level competition, instead of it being a leftover scrap for the newbies and perennial mid-carders to fight over.

Tonight, Big E Langston faces the biggest challenge of his short reign so far, as he goes against the failed Money In The Bank briefcase casher in Damien Sandow. Will his path of destruction continue at TLC tonight?

The Road to TLC

Damien Sandow the cerebral shark smelt blood on the Oct. 28th Raw. Being a canny student of anatomy, he realised that John Cena, who had won the World Heavyweight Championship at Hell In A Cell one night prior, couldn't be fully healed in less than two months from major elbow surgery. So he battered the Champ with his briefcase, tossed the injured limb into the ring post and barricade, and cashed in right there and then! But even that head start by the evil genius wasn't enough kryptonite to vanquish the Superman, he laid down to the Attitude Adjustment like everyone else who faces the good Captain Cena.

If Sandow was slumping downward, then Big E Langston was on the opposite trajectory, cleanly defeating Curtis Axel for the IC Title with the Big Ending on the Nov. 18th Raw and successfully retaining the belt in similar fashion just six days later at Survivor Series.

However, Sandow regrouped from his MiTB embarrassment by pinning Dolph Ziggler in a Hamptons Hardcore match on the Nov. 25th Raw and decisively winning their rubber match on the Dec. 2nd Raw to become the number one contender to Langston's Intercontinental Championship.

Really, other than Langston staring down his prey after Sandow's recent televised victories, there's been no build for this match. Just three weeks between pay-per-views is always too little time to do much hype for the undercard.

What's at stake?

A loss here would really derail Big E's momentum who has looked simply unstoppable of late and seems destined for big things in 2014. However, that shocking upset would allow Damien Sandow to wash the bitter taste of the WHC defeat to John Cena out of his mouth and maybe slowly crawl his way up the WWE ladder to such a lofty position again.

With only one World Champion in WWE again, the winner of this match would be in a plum spot and likely avoid the recent secondary title holder curse whereby the champion ends up in a worse position at the end of the reign than he did at the beginning. So victory for both men is imperative!

It won't matter who's paying for the services of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, as all three Hounds of Justice are unleashed on The Best in the World on Sunday night in Houston.

Three-on-One Handicap Match

CM Punk vs. The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns)

CM Punk has barely had a second to breathe even after eliminating Paul Heyman from his life. The Straight Edge Superstar has found himself directly in the cross-hairs of The Shield, and now his back is against the wall in an impossible 3-on-1 match against The Hounds Of Justice at TLC.

The Road to TLC

The night after Survivor Series, CM Punk grabbed a mic and expressed his displeasure with HHH's lack of creativity. Not surprisingly, The Shield came out later on during Punk's match and Roman Reigns speared him into oblivion, severely injuring his ribs. The Shield then finished Punk off with a bone-crushing triple power bomb.

The next week on Raw, CM Punk accused HHH of sending The Shield after him. Kane, the Director of Operations, reassured Punk that a completely unbiased investigation into the matter showed that The Authority had no involvement in the attack. The Shield suddenly ambushed the ring and were ready to pounce, when Stephanie McMahon halted their impending assault and said that CM Punk was to be respected and admired. Kane then showed his respect and admiration for Punk by booking The Best In The World into a 3 versus 1 handicap match at TLC against all three members of The Shield.

Punk later told Renee Young that he knew he was going down at TLC. The Shield had spent the last year running roughshod over the entire WWE and taking out all of the top superstars including The Rock, John Cena, Rey Mysterio, The Undertaker, Sheamus, and even the main event player Brodus Clay. Punk knew that he was facing impossible odds, but he was still determined to take some members of The Shield down with him at TLC.

However, all hope was not lost for Punk because The Shield began to finally show some subtle cracks in their unity around this time. Ambrose interrupted Roman Reigns during an interview to selfishly assert that he was clearly the baddest man in The Shield and that he should be the obvious man to take out CM Punk in a singles match. Reigns didn't look to pleased to hear this news. A similar occurrence took place at The Slammy Awards, as Dean Ambrose interrupted Reigns during a presentation when Reigns was about to announce the nominees for the Double Cross of the Year award. A sign of foreshadowing, perhaps? Ambrose's Shield brethren did not seem to appreciate his desire for the spotlight at their expense.

Later that night Ambrose battled Punk in a singles match. Towards the end of the match, a cocky Dean Ambrose got in the face of Rollins and Reigns and told them to take a hike, as he didn't need them standing ringside to defeat Punk. Reigns and Rollins incredulously left the ringside area, while Punk recovered and finished off Ambrose with a GTS. This painted the one clear path to a Punk victory at TLC - take advantage of a miscommunication with The Shield and finish off an isolated member.

What's at stake?

The unity of The Shield could very well be at stake on Sunday night at TLC. If CM Punk can use his wits to outsmart The Shield and pit them against each other, he has a chance to take the entire unit down all by himself. But CM Punk's ribs are also on the line at TLC due to all the spears he has endured in recent weeks. Punk's body could easily reach its breaking point if The Shield can keep their egos in check and utilize their near-perfect tag team strategy against him.

It's time to really get hyped for John Cena vs. Randy Orton at tonight's (Dec. 15, 2013) WWE "TLC" pay-per-view in Houston.

It's finally time. It's been over a decade since WWE last recognized only one true champion within the promotion but that changes -- or at least that's what has been promised -- tonight (Sun., Dec. 15, 2013) at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, when John Cena and Randy Orton meet in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match in the main event of the TLC pay-per-view (PPV).

Both the world heavyweight championship and the WWE title will be suspended above the ring. The winner will be determined by grabbing both.

Yes, that still leaves the door open for a smoz finish that sees one man grab one title and the other man grab the other. And there will continue to be plenty of debate on that point all the way up until we witness the finish firsthand.

Is WWE crazy enough to deliver another screwy finish to its fanbase, many of which have paid for the last five PPV shows that also featured screwy finishes? We will find out tonight.

Does the above promo get you hyped for the show?

The tag division is as strong as its been in years. So why can't WWE write a feud or book a title match until the last show before the pay-per-view? Check out our analysis of their latest potpourri of a contest for the bronze eagles.

Tag Team Championship

Goldust & Cody Rhodes (c) vs. The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro & Jack Swagger) vs. Curtis Axel & Ryback vs. The Big Show & Rey Mysterio

The tag team division may not have undergone a complete transformation, but it's certainly stronger than it has been in years. While Team Hell No reigned over the pairs ranks, groups like The Shield, The Usos, The Real Americans and The Usos were coming into their own. Throw in the "we're not sure what else to do with them" teams that have always been a part of pro wrestling with the rare organic pairing like the brothers Rhodes and you've got yourself a scene.

Maybe some day they'll actually write storylines for the guys, but for now, let's be thankful for what we've got. And what we've got is enough teams to throw into a fourway elimination match for the belts.

The Rhodes Brothers

Why they'll win: Because they just won a Slammy for best tag team and have been killing it in the ring. Cody Rhodes has never quite broken through as a singles competitor, and he's either building equity with the crowds to become a solo star or settling into his niche as a teams Superstar. Goldust is doing the best work of his career, and this is probably the best way to use him right now - especially if we are headed to a world with only one major title.

Why they'll lose: Because there really is a conspiracy by the McMahons to keep the scions of Dusty down.

The Real Americans

Why they'll win: Antonio Cesaro is operating at a ridiculously high level right now, and he's helped and/or influenced Jack Swagger to up his game, too. The powers-that-be seem to really like using him to help/influence new talent down in developmental, too, so they may decide to keep him in a team so he can fly to Florida for a bunch of tapings over the next year. Plus, now that he doesn't have to dance around the real-life lines of racism since he's not always feuding with Latinos, Zeb Colter is settling in nicely as a heel who is occasionally humorous.

Why they'll lose: They have bigger plans for the Swiss Superman, and their break-up story doesn't need the belt.

Ryabxel

Why they'll win: Both of these guys need some kind of feather in their cap if they're ever going to be taken seriously again by the WWE Universe. They both still look like the kinds of wrestlers than Vince McMahon and Triple H like to push. If you take Ryback's ability to connect with the audience and mix it with Curtis Axel's ability to call and work a match, you've got a heck of a Superstar.

Why they'll lose: Their team name sounds like one its side effects is an erection that lasts more than four hours. Even if you combined The Big Guy's ability to connect with an audience with Axel's workrate, you'd still need somebody to cut promos.

Rey Mysterio & The Big Show

Why they'll win: Because Twins is Vince's favorite movie, and he thinks short people standing next to tall people is hilarious. Big Show might cry if they lose.

Why they'll lose: Both men are ten seconds away from a trip to the trainers room, where Rey may or may not try to inject some HGH in between his toes.

What's at stake?

The winners are guaranteed to be in the next last minute multi-team match for Royal Rumble!

Who cares if it's thrown together at the last minute! Eight guys get a pay-per-view share and you get to watch Cesaro and Goldust!

Can AJ continue her title reign into 2014, or will the Total Divas' star take her precious - and begin to reshape her image with her second Divas championship run?

Divas Championship

Natalya vs. AJ Lee (c)

She's had the champ for almost six months, and is approaching the top of the list of longest Divas title reigns in the belt's five year history. But after fending off the cast of E!'s reality show Total Divas in everything from championship to elimination matches, can AJ fight off another challenge against the Diva with one of the best pedigrees in the business?

The Road to TLC

Since taking the title from on-again-off-again friend Kaitlyn, Lee has been a fighting champion. Through rematches with the Hybrid Diva, a mixed-gender feud against former boyfriend Dolph Ziggler, challenges from both Bella twins and even placing the title on the line in developmental on NXT, AJ has proven that she might be small, she might be a little "off", but she is not someone to take lightly in the ring.

A string of losses to Natalya and the rest of the Total Divas cast may have driven the champ to a different approach, though. Since surviving a fatal fourway at Night of Champions that included Natty, AJ has sent her bodyguard Tamina Snuka or the groups of "True Divas" she's assembled from time-to-time to fight her battles for her. While those battles rage, the Pint-Sized Powder Keg has clutched at her precious and skipped off into denial that she and the title could ever be separated.

The blonde former champ has seen it all from her days in Stu Hart's Dungeon to discussing relationship issues with fitness models on cable television. She's certainly no stranger to competing or to facing AJ. In addition to the fourway on pay-per-view (PPV) in September, Natty tapped to the Black Widow on Smackdown during the summer and pinned the champ clean on Raw earlier this month to earn this shot.

What's at stake?

That title is everything to AJ - just ask her, she'll tell you. Or show you her neck. Just don't ask to hold the belt she sometimes calls her child.

Natalya has been the good company girl, exposing her personal life for the reality show cameras and heading down to Florida to work with the NXT trainees whenever asked. After almost two years without the Divas title around her waist, a seasoned veteran like Neidhart has to be itching for another chance to call herself champion.

And while Lee may not want to hear it, that could be the best thing for the division, as well. Creative doesn't seem to know how to present AJ or the Total Divas. Is the champ a heel because she's crazy, or a face because young girls love her? Are The Bellas and The Funkadactyls faces just because they're on E!? A desperate AJ hellbent on recovering her "child" from the possession of a veteran who is using the belt to ensure that she's taken seriously would be...

well, it would be an actual story. Which is better than what the women of WWE get on a regular basis right now.
