When a WWE pay-per-view (PPV) event is on the horizon, the staff of Cageside Seats usually offers predictions for all of the advertised matches on the card. This data can be used to calculate a simple predictability rating for any event.

Seven different staff members predicted the winners for the matches that took place on October 21 at Crown Jewel 2021. Staff members received credit for a correct prediction of the winner of any match, even if they were wrong about the context of that victory.

The Cageside Seats match preview articles for Crown Jewel also offered polls allowing Cagesiders the chance to weigh in with their predictions.

The following chart contains the prediction results for these matches. The leftmost column includes the match list. Below each staff member’s name, the number “1” is a correct prediction and the number “0” is an incorrect prediction. Empty boxes indicate where no prediction data was available. The rightmost column contains the overall predictability rating for every match, and the very last row shows the overall accuracy of each individual staff member.

The line for RK-Bro’s match can be interpreted as follows: “6 out of 8 predictions for RK-Bro’s match were correct, which is a predictability rating of 75.0%.”

These numbers add up to 65 correct predictions and 15 incorrect predictions, which means the overall predictability rating for Crown Jewel is 81.3%.

This increases the overall predictability rating for 2021 WWE PPVs from 68.9% up to 70.7% (388 correct vs. 161 incorrect predictions). For comparison’s sake, the overall predictability ratings each year from from 2015 through 2020 were 63.4%, 61.1%, 61.6%, 58.7%, 63.7%, and 65.5%, respectively.

Now here are the voting percentages from the Cageside community polls for the winners of these matches:

90%: The Usos

80%: Edge

88%: Mansoor

73%: RK-Bro

57%: Zelina Vega

59%: Goldberg

57%: Xavier Woods

94%: Big E

54%: Becky Lynch (36% Banks, 10% Belair)

73%: Roman Reigns

The Cageside staff was 100% accurate in our predictions on four of the 10 matches, including Goldberg over Lashley, The Usos over Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin, Mansoor over Mustafa Ali, and Big E over Drew McIntyre.

It doesn’t take a lot of brain power to guess Mansoor might win in Saudi Arabia. As predictable as his matches in that country have always been, the Cageside community voters were even more confident about the outcomes for the Usos and Big E. Sorry Drew McIntyre, but you simply never had a chance to regain that WWE championship.

As for Goldberg, his obsession with murdering Bobby Lashley didn’t cause us to blink. The Cageside community voters were more unsure about it than the staff, yet we were all in agreement that, yeah, Goldberg was probably going to murder a man in Saudi Arabia. What a strange guy.

Brock Lesnar was the clear underdog in his first WWE match in roughly 16 months. The Cageside staff and community know very well by now that Roman Reigns doesn’t lose on pay-per-view, whether he is facing a first time main event wrestler like Jey Uso, or one of the biggest stars in the business like John Cena or Brock Lesnar.

There was no match on the card that completely fooled us. The winners of the King of the Ring and Queen’s Crown tournament were the most difficult things to accurately predict, but we’re still talking about a success rate of 50% or higher for our guesses there.

The staff of Cageside Seats had a great night with predicting the winners at Crown Jewel. How did you fare, Cagesiders?

After every WWE PPV, we ask you all to rank each match on the show using the star rating system made famous by Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer.

The results are in from Crown Jewel, a show that’s always overshadowed by the morally dubious (at best) relationship between WWE and its host country. Here’s how our little corner of the wrestle web graded what happened in the ring in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Oct. 21 - and how our subjective grades compare to Meltzer’s.

Many have asked “why Dave?”, which to me is fairly obvious. Love, hate, or don’t care about him, the Observer Star Rating is the proverbial industry standard. No one else’s are tracked by Wikipedia and other web outlets. You can’t place online bets on what grades other pundits will give big matches.

But in order to not make this all about Meltz, we added another fan-voted rating to the mix - this one from Cagematch. That site uses a ten point scale, so in calculating the difference between our score and theirs, I halved the Cagematch rating.

Here’s what that all looks like:

There’s minor differences of opinion, but generally speaking we’re all on the same page. We liked the Universal title fight more than Dave or Cagematch’s voters, while they preferred the WWE championship match (based on its low vote total, Cagsiders seem to have not even cared about Big E’s slobberknocker with Drew McIntyre). This site was much more generous to the Queen’s Crown Final than anyone else, and Cagematchers REALLY don’t like middle aged men doing violence to one another, apparently.

Edge’s Hell in a Cell win over Seth Rollins was universally praised, something we could have seen coming since it ran away with our “Match of the Night” poll after Crown Jewel ended.

Overall, Crown Jewel was a hit across the board - from the perspective of in-ring action, anyway. The average Cageside match rating of 3.56 made it the highest rated WWE PPV of 2021. It’s the Observer’s second best rated WWE show of the year. I didn’t start tracking Cagematch’s ratings until after WrestleMania, so they’re not included in this yearly averages chart - but Crown Jewel is tied for their second highest rated WWE event since April.

WWE featured nine total matches on the main card of Crown Jewel 2021.

The main card of this pay-per-view (PPV) lasted 3 hours, 58 minutes, and 42 seconds (3h 58m 42s). Here is a sorted list of the bell-to-bell times for the nine matches that took place during this event:

27m 39s: Edge vs. Seth Rollins

19m 23s: Lynch vs. Belair vs. Banks

13m 23s: Big E vs. Drew McIntyre

12m 20s: Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar

11m 25s: Goldberg vs. Bobby Lashley

9m 37s: Xavier Woods vs. Finn Bálor

8m 42s: RK-Bro vs. Omos & AJ Styles

5m 50s: Doudrop vs. Zelina Vega

These times add up to 1h 58m 22s, which is roughly 49.6% of the show. For comparison’s sake, the overall match time percentage for all WWE PPVs since the start of 2013 is 53.9%.

Edge is still a true marathon man, once again wrestling for damn near 30 minutes and outpacing everyone else on the card.

On the other side of the spectrum, Doudrop vs. Zelina Vega was a fitting end to the Queen’s Crown Tournament, which is one of the worst wrestling tournaments that I can recall. The Crown Jewel match was actually the longest of the entire tournament by a good amount, despite being the shortest match on this PPV. Overall, the seven matches in the tournament had a cumulative match time of under 20 minutes. WWE should probably never book two tournaments to run concurrently if this is how the time will be allocated. It would also help if the field wasn’t filled with so many low card wrestlers, because those are the very wrestlers who WWE likely won’t give much time in the ring.

Finally, Crown Jewel featured a Goldberg match that went longer than 11 minutes and was actually good! Perhaps the legend has more left in the tank than I’ve previously assumed. I think this version of Goldberg who isn’t competing for titles and is instead motivated by personal strife (and excessive murder) fits better into WWE storylines at this stage of his career. WWE’s next Saudi Arabia show will be here before you know it, and that’s probably when we’ll see Goldberg wrestle again.

Are you surprised by any of these results, Cagesiders? Which of these matches received less (or more) time than you hoped for?

Welcome to Cageside Community Star Ratings for Crown Jewel 2021!

For some wrestling fans, star ratings are a way of life. It’s one thing to say that a match is good or bad, but can you actually put a number on it?

The star rating system is a scale ranging from 0 to 5 with increments of 0.25. A 5-star match is as close to perfect as it gets while a 0-star match is a complete dud.

Determining the star rating for a given match is a highly subjective process. In general the goal is to wrap up all the important elements of a match into one simple number. Some factors to consider may include the story and booking of the match, the workrate of the performers, ring psychology, length of the match, audience reaction, and so forth.

There is no such thing as a wrong answer, because every wrestling fan consumes this art form in a different way.

The purpose of Cageside Community Star Ratings is for the readers to assign star ratings to every single match on a given WWE pay-per-view event. These results will be tabulated and summarized after every match on the pay-per-view has been voted on by the community.

The final match up for debate from Crown Jewel is The Usos vs. Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin.

The big story coming out of Friday Night SmackDown this week centered around Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch getting into a backstage confrontation following a disaster of a title exchange segment. Lost in the shuffle of all this has been Sasha Banks, who came out after Lynch took off and firmly established herself as the top babyface on the blue brand going forward.

Then, seemingly not long after the aforementioned backstage altercation, Banks was giving an interview for Talking Smack where she got emotional talking about her match at Crown Jewel being a top three moment in her career:

“It didn’t quite go my way. I almost had the win if Becky didn’t cheat and grab that rope, but being in Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh, was something so special. It has to be in the top three moments of my career. To go out there, and I can get emotional, to go out there and to see those fans, to see those kids, to point at them and they’re pointing back at me I’ve never felt something just so impactful and so amazing. To be in the ring with two incredible women who I respect so much, we created so much magic and made history, and gave so much hope to thousands, to millions of people watching at home. It was something that I’m going to remember the rest of my life, and I’m so honored to be there.”

The WWE/Saudi Arabia relationship is still bad (as my colleague Cain outlined here), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t deeply meaningful that there were kids and young girls in Riyadh getting the chance to watch wrestlers like Banks living the dream. Maybe one day they can to.

It all feels so much bigger and more important than petty bickering over who looks bad in a dumb segment.
