WrestleMania 37 was a blast.

The consistency across both nights really jumps out. The two main events delivered, the mid-card matches did exactly what they were supposed to do and the bad stuff (hi, Fiend!) was pretty sparse.

While nothing places inside the Top 10, the depth of this year’s show is what impresses. It’s one of only three WrestleManias to land two separate matches inside the Top 20, with great stuff from the likes of Rollins & Cesaro and Owens & Zayn fleshing things out. Plus, an inspired performance from a certain Bunny.

There was lots to love over the course of the weekend. But, for the love of Christ, can we please figure out the women’s tag team division? Okay, deep breath.

When the biggest complaint about a WrestleMania main event is that it should have been even longer, you know you’ve done something right. This was our first chance to see the dastardly dark side of Roman Reigns in front of an audience, and it was well worth the wait. As dangerous as he is conniving, the ‘Mania crowd finally has a real reason to hate him, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings. This was Reigns’ fifth Mania main event spot, and it’s easily the best of the bunch. Not only that, it’s the best WrestleMania match of Edge and Daniel Bryan’s respective careers, as well. Three generational talents with wildly different styles and personas, it not only demanded your attention in the moment, it made you fascinated to see what happens next.

One of the great things about a two-night WrestleMania is that Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks fully got their time to shine. There was such a feeling of exhilaration watching these two absolutely live up to the moment. After the women’s main event at ‘Mania 35 underwhelmed a bit, Sasha and Bianca more than earned the stage, and they made the entire thing look effortless.

The main events get most of the headlines, but a classic WrestleMania is made in the mid-card. WWE has long struggled with booking non-title feuds, but the build and execution here was excellent. Cesaro’s first singles match at WrestleMania should earn him plenty more, and hopefully an even more elevated push. I can envision a slow burn that sees him challenging Roman Reigns for the strap at SummerSlam, if they play their cards right. This match also served to remind us just how good Seth Rollins is. He’s firmly in “a loss doesn’t hurt him” territory, which is such a useful tool. Put him in the ring with just about anybody and it’s guaranteed to work. On this night, he and Cesaro more than just worked. They shined.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Bad Bunny’s entire arc is how legitimate the entire thing felt. This was so much more than some stunt appearance to boost social media engagement (*cough* Logan Paul *cough*). He’s a bonafide wrestling nut who got to live out his dream on the grandest of stages.

This is another great example of what having a great mid-card can do for a show. KO and Sami are just about the two most reliable guys in the company, if not all of wrestling, so this was a no-brainer. And sometimes that’s just fine. The others (Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio at XXVII, Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan at XXVIII, Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar at 35) range from serviceable to unfathomable. It’s a tough spot. The match between Lashley and McIntyre never felt as momentous as it should have, it being the first match in front of the trademarked WWE Universe in over a year. It started sloppy, it ended meekly and those in Tampa were denied the opportunity to finally celebrate a title victory with The Scottish Warrior. Bizarre build aside, the match just wasn’t very good and I remain befuddled by the constant presence of Shane McMahon at WrestleMania. Who is this for? Bayley didn’t have a ‘Mania match. The Street Profits were delegated to SmackDown the night before. It boggles the mind. Shane’s matches all come down what God-forsaken bump he’s going to take, so when even that ends up being underwhelming? Well, folks, we’ve got a stinker on our hands.

No two lists would look the same, and that’s partly because most of us wouldn’t put the time, effort and consideration into undertaking the task of ranking every main card WrestleMania match over 36 years - and then to double back and update it within 36 hours of the 2021 show ending!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this, and that it’s made your WrestleMania experience a little more fun. Bookmark this page for when you want to revisit some of your favorite arguments, and we’ll try to rope Dan into letting y’all yell at him again next year!

Austin vs. Rock is the defining WrestleMania rivalry. They met three times over the course of five years and every single match is fantastic. This one, where Rock defended his WWF Championship in a No Disqualification Match in the main event, is pure electricity. In 1999, you get the feeling that most people in any given WWF crowd would commit murder for Steve Austin. They eat directly out of his hand, and it’s easy to see why. The sheer charisma in play here is almost unfair. There will never be anything else like it. The match falls into some of the messy trappings of the era (multiple ref bumps, Vince McMahon interference, Mankind emerging from a supposed stay in the hospital to count the final pinfall, etc.), but despite being a little convoluted, it succeeds on every single level. I think that’s because, at its core, the Steve Austin formula is pretty simple. He’s a working man who drinks beer and gets to kick the shit out of his boss, and he executes every single part of it with such authenticity. This match features two absolute stars at the absolute height of their abilities, and it’s pure wrestling popcorn.

When wrestling is good, it can change the course of the business. This was only the second Ladder Match in company history (the first being a match between Michaels and Bret Hart two years prior on “WWF Wrestling Challenge”), and it largely set the standard for the era of destruction and savagery to come. Watching this match back, the brutality pales in comparison to what we’re used to today, but at the time it was revolutionary.

Pairing together two legendary, nearly household names doesn’t always equate to success at WrestleMania. At this point in their careers, both The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels were in their mid 40s, with enough memorable WrestleMania moments under their belts to make anybody envious. But at WrestleMania 25, without absolutely anything to prove, they had the best WrestleMania match of each of their respective careers. For more than 30 minutes, they remind you why they take up residence on so many Mt. Rushmores. The build to the match, and the match itself, both evoke a bunch of bizarre religious metaphors and allegories (if you’ve never seen Shawn Michaels descend from the heavens like an angel during his entrance, I cannot recommend it highly enough), but much like my time in Sunday School, I chose to overlook it. The contrasting styles of Michaels and ‘Taker make for something otherworldly all by themselves. For two men synonymous with WrestleMania, this was their finest hour.

Hey, it’s these two again! While their match at WrestleMania XV is phenomenal, this one manages to be slightly better. It’s two years after their first ‘Mania encounter and, somehow, the Texas crowd is even more rabid than it was then. First, let’s talk about the match itself. It’s more technical than its predecessor, highlighted by a sequence where the two men trade submission maneuvers while they’re both covered in blood. It’s awesome. Just like their first match, Vince McMahon is dead-set on getting involved, so he makes his way out to ringside and, much to the chagrin of 67,000 people inside the Astrodome, starts to assist Austin. It’s a fascinating thing to feel palpable anxiety from a stadium full of strangers. Their deepest fears come true, as Vince not only helps Austin win the match and the title, they shake hands and drink beer together in the ring to close the show. Thus, the Austin heel turn. There is genuine bewilderment percolating everywhere. It’s like watching an ex making out with your mortal enemy. So, let’s talk about this. Do I think executing a heel turn with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, arguably the most popular wrestler in the history of the sport, was a great idea? No, I do not! Do I think it dampens the legacy of this incredible match? No, I do not! The debate over what they did with Austin is best served for another day, because this list is about matches, not angles; and as far as matches go, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Perhaps the most stunning thing about this match is how patently absurd the storyline heading into it was. In short, Flair alleged he had dated Savage’s (real life) partner Miss Elizabeth before him and, if he was victorious, would display a personal photo of her on the big screen at the Hoosier Dome. This was enough, as you can imagine, to get the Macho Man very upset! It was about more than the WWF Championship on this night, ladies and gentlemen!!!!! The match is like a simmering pot of water. Flair dominates early, Savage makes his comeback and then it boils over with repeated interference from Mr. Perfect, which leads to Elizabeth inevitably fighting her way to ringside to make herself the focal point of the match. Savage wins with a roll-up, Elizabeth attacks Flair after he makes a move on her post-match and the lovebirds celebrate in the ring to close things out. Elizabeth was such an interesting enigma. She was often treated like an object, but she was never overtly sexualized. You couldn’t help but love her. Despite all of the hoopla, shenanigans and threats of revenge porn, the match is exceptional. The pacing is brilliant, everything makes sense and it’s also the catalyst for Flair’s post-match backstage promo, which is one of the best ever. An immaculate display of everything that makes professional wrestling great.

In one corner, Bret Hart: the technical legend, the cocky Canadian, the man with a legacy to uphold. In the other, Steve Austin: the renegade, the beer-drinking Texan, the newcomer with a legacy to write. It’s wrestling on the verge of a rebirth. The two of them spill all over the arena and you can literally feel the legend of Austin growing as the match progresses. And yet, the most successful part of the match might be the finish. Austin, dripping in blood, refuses to submit and, instead, passes out in the Sharpshooter. It’s Bret Hart saying “not yet” to the new kid on the block, but it’s also Austin refusing to admit defeat while setting himself up for a run as the top guy. The match manages to accomplish so many things at once. It’s two competitors meeting each other in the middle, pushing wrestling to greater heights. It’s odd, and certainly doesn’t match the legacy he built over his career, but this match against Edge at WrestleMania 22 is his best and a worthy reminder of what a special performer he was on a big stage. This match is deranged and beautiful, fully encompassing what Foley was able to do when a performer would meet him on his level of brutality. Edge is a more-than-capable dance partner and they create something very memorable. Among other things, it features Edge spearing Foley off the ring apron through a table engulfed in flames. It marks Foley’s most indelible WrestleMania moment in a career that probably should have been afforded more of them.

The WrestleMania XXX main event shows how powerful it can be to make the right decision. Earlier in the evening, Bryan had defeated HHH (spoiler alert: in an even better match than this) to earn a spot in the triple threat. The entire journey is classic underdog stuff, but obvious storytelling can still be great. After the debacle at WrestleMania XXVIII, where Bryan dropped his World Heavyweight Championship to Sheamus in a grand total of 18 seconds, it was tempting to think that they were going to fumble the ball here, too. Instead, they made some magic. At the thirtieth anniversary of WrestleMania, Daniel Bryan won two matches in one night to become World Champion.

Ric Flair’s late career WrestleMania renaissance is really something to behold. At WrestleMania X8, after a decade away, Flair made his return to the grand stage at the age of 53 and put his body through absolute living hell. There’s just something about a Ric Flair bloody crimson mask, when it gets all in his platinum blonde hair; it lets you know the party has really started. Flair only had three singles matches at WrestleMania and each one lands inside the top 40. That’s an impressive feat, emphasized by the fact that two of the matches happened when he was in his 50s. When I’m in my 50s, I hope to be sitting in some kind of La-Z-Boy reminiscing about the time I hit three free throws in a row, not taking top-rope suplexes from The Undertaker.

We return to the WMCU (WrestleMania Cinematic Universe) for last year’s Boneyard Match, which firmly falls into the “better than I could have ever imagined” category. It’s also the only WrestleMania match to feature a competitor being buried alive in a cemetery! How about that! From the jump, this felt like something fully realized and unique. It manages to be moody, without being obvious. It plays into familiar tropes, without being cliche. It’s a masterclass in pivoting when the deck is stacked against you, and making the most of a difficult situation. The entire thing was filmed in late March, just weeks into the pandemic, which makes it even more of an admirable achievement. It also goes a long way to righting the ship in terms of The Undertaker’s WrestleMania and, frankly, overall wrestling legacy, which suffered from a bevy of false starts and stops leading up to this match. It’s a fitting WrestleMania finale for The Deadman, if that indeed proves to be the case.

The Flair renaissance culminated here. Six years after his battle with The Undertaker at WrestleMania X8, his ‘Mania swan song was responsible for grown men starting to embrace the idea of saying “I’m sorry” and expressing love for one another. At the ripe ol’ age of 59, Flair said his farewell in a barnburner against HBK, a tremendously emotional match and with an equally emotional post-match goodbye. Sometimes wrestling makes you cry and THAT’S OKAY, DAD. It’s professional wrestling storytelling of the highest degree and the last bullet point on a WrestleMania resume that spanned 16 years and produced some of the most enduring moments in the event’s history. While others have competed at WrestleMania more, Ric Flair’s hit-or-miss ratio is nearly unparalleled.

We’ve cracked the top 100, wrestling nerds!

The difference between an average WrestleMania match and a great WrestleMania match is pretty severe, and you start to feel that here. The matches ranging from 100-51 on this greatest of all-time list are all inherently solid, and begin to verge on truly great as the numbers get smaller. Every match in this chunk is something you could show a non-wrestling fan in an attempt to get them to understand the mystique of WrestleMania and it would translate (well, maybe not a certain Bray Wyatt/John Cena experiment from last year, but more on that in a bit).

You know a match is historic when one of the competitors arrives via helicopter! The main event of WrestleMania 35, featuring women for the first time in history, was an important and earned opportunity. It’s just a shame the match isn’t a little bit better. The expectations were almost unbearably high, but that’s only because of how revolutionary the work of these three women had been in the build-up. This was the height of Becky Lynch hysteria, Ronda had far exceeded most expectations with her in-ring ability and Charlotte was firmly on her way to establishing herself as one of the best wrestlers of her generation.

The match is serviceable, but definitely underwhelming for the moment and the big stage. It just never really kicks into high gear, and features a messy, anti-climactic finish, which is ultimately a disappointing cap to Lynch’s hero’s journey. With all of this being said, it’s impossible to overstate what an impactful accomplishment this was. When you’re in the druthers watching Playboy Lumberjill matches and Cat Fights, it’s hard to fathom that women’s wrestling would ever get the respect it deserved. On this night, it finally did.

The WrestleMania X-Seven Street Fight features a little bit of everything, including appearances from the trio of Stephanie McMahon, Trish Stratus and Linda McMahon (who, in storyline, had been placed in a medically-induced coma by her husband and daughter so Vince could carry on an affair with Trish, naturally). It’s all...a lot. But it’s a circus that works! It’s a campy, insane affair in front of an absolutely rabid crowd, and sometimes that’s all you need. Shane would go on to have better WrestleMania matches, but as a complete package, it’s hard not to love this mess.

To appreciate the evolution of WrestleMania, you have to go back to the start. The inaugural ‘Mania is, in many ways, a total disaster. There isn’t a great match on the card, but the entire show is centered around this main event. Muhammad Ali is the guest referee! God damn Liberace is the guest timekeeper! The match itself is pure and utter chaos, but it feels so important. You can literally sense a seismic shift in the way that professional wrestling is packaged and presented, and it lays the groundwork for everything that’s to come. For my money, it’s one of the most high-risk, high-reward things the company has ever done. Is it an actual wrestling match? Certainly not. There’s not even a wrestling hold to be found.

At its core, WrestleMania is about moments. 93,173 people. Pontiac Silverdome. The Slam. It’s equal parts wrestling match and spectacle. Hell, it might be even more spectacle than wrestling match. It’s the best Money In The Bank cash-in in history and one heck of an intoxicating moment. Before Seth arrives with his cute briefcase, the match between Brock and Roman is a bit of a predictable finisher-fest. Roman kicks out of approximately 835 F5s and 263 German suplexes before the action picks up, Rollins runs out to the ring like a man possessed and eventually curb stomps his ol’ pal Roman to win the belt. It’s a legitimately surprising moment to cap off the show, which doesn’t happen often at WrestleMania. Or when it does, it’s executed so poorly that it taints the rest of the night (Papa Shango vibes).

It turns out that pitting two of the biggest stars in pro wrestling history in the main event of WrestleMania can make for something more surreal than spectacular. Despite being billed as “Once In A Lifetime,” Rock and Cena would meet in the main event again the following year (I don’t like being lied to, WWE), but this match is the better of the two. It succeeds at feeling big, but it lacks the juice to make it anything close to a classic. This was The Rock’s first singles match in over eight years, and while he barely misses a step, it certainly feels like more of a special attraction than something with actual stakes. The fact that they’d run it back next year enforces that point.

It is absolutely wild that, at WrestleMania 2 in 1986, active NFL players stepped into the ring with the likes of Andre The Giant, Big John Studd and Tony Atlas for a legitimate Battle Royal. These weren’t no-name football players, either. We’re talking guys like William “Refrigerator” Perry just months removed from winning the Super Bowl with the Bears and Bill Fralic, who had just been the #2 overall pick in the NFL Draft the year prior. There was serious risk for injury with all of these massive bodies in the ring at the same time. The closest thing we’ll see now is Rob Gronkowski taking a two-foot fall from a platform to win the 24/7 Championship. And he wasn’t even under contract at the time! In the early days of WrestleMania, the company was even more obsessed with celebrity than it is now. In addition, WrestleMania 2 featured appearances from Elvira, Ozzy Osbourne and the Wendy’s “Where’s The Beef?” Lady (which, coincidentally, is always the names I list when asked what three people I’d want to have dinner with, living or dead). The WWF vs. NFL Battle Royal was categorically insane, but part of me wishes they would revert back to some of their old ways. Let’s get Patrick Mahomes inside Hell In A Cell! Lamar Jackson in a TLC Match! TOM BRADY COMPETING FOR THE MONEY IN THE BANK BRIEFCASE! The possibilities are endless.

God, this company is addicted to football players. There are two truths in play here: (1) The fact that a retired NFL player headlined the biggest show of the year against Bam Bam Bigelow speaks to how dire things were in 1995 and (2) the match is actually better than it has any right to be. With that being said, you can see how the negative impact of the main event booking at WrestleMania IX is still being felt here. There’s absolutely no direction and, worse yet, Lawrence Taylor wins this match. A retired football player won the WrestleMania main event clean! Well, dear reader, it turns out that having eleven tournament matches in one night is overkill and leads to an overwhelming amount of bad, short matches. There would have been even more, but two tournament matches (including the very underwhelming Andre/Hogan rematch from ‘Mania III) ended in either double count-out or disqualification. Savage/DiBiase, which was the tournament final and main event of the evening, is a serviceable match, but it was the exhausting cherry on top of a mediocre sundae. Cena has competed 15 times at WrestleMania, the 7th most all-time, and while I’m not a Cena hater (please don’t dox me, Cenation!), I don’t think he’s ever managed to have a truly memorable ‘Mania match.

The beauty and fluidity of great tag team wrestling was a hallmark of WrestleMania during many of its early years, thanks to teams like The Hart Foundation, The Rockers and The British Bulldogs. This match, between The Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) and Strike Force (Rick Martel and Tito Santana), is technical and crisp, which actually felt pretty revolutionary at the time. There are no frills, no gimmicks, no distractions. It’s just pure wrestling. The match also provides a chance to recognize Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, who was in the corner of The Brain Busters. The best manager to ever do it, Heenan was a staple of WrestleMania for years.
It all came to a head (glorious pun intended!) at WrestleMania 23 in Detroit, with Trump in the corner of Bobby Lashley and Vince McMahon in the corner of Umaga in a Battle of the Billionaires Match. The stipulation stated that whichever billionaire’s guy lost had to shave their head. Spoiler: Donald Trump does not get his head shaved in front of over 80,000 people. The match itself is a total bore, but this is all about the extracurriculars.

The entire charade is almost redeemed by the fact that, post-match, guest referee Stone Cold Steve Austin hits Trump with a Stunner. Trump, unsurprisingly, takes the Stunner terribly and is left to sort of crumple to the ground, which is covered in shaving cream. It’s cathartic. It’s also hard to say which is more surprising: the fact that Trump allowed himself to be embarrassed in the first place, or the fact that, nearly 15 years later, ol’ Bob Lashley finds himself prominently in the WrestleMania picture again.

Let me direct your attention to the main event of WrestleMania IX! The year was 1993 and WWF was already in trouble. They were stuck between eras, there was no real direction and star power at the top of the card was severely lacking. So, what did they do? They had Yokozuna win the belt to only, inexplicably, lose it immediately to a recently-returned Hulk Hogan in an impromptu match following the main event (#343 if you’re scoring at home, or even if you’re by yourself).
Hunter Hearst Helmsley has competed 23 times at WrestleMania, the second-most matches in history. Despite the plethora of options and opportunities, he’s never really had a ‘Mania classic. In fact, most of his matches are relatively indistinguishable from one another. If you see his name on the card, you can pretty much count on a plodding affair involving some kind of stipulation, shenanigans and the fact that a sledgehammer is getting involved somehow.

Sometimes it works better than others, but this singles match against Sheamus smack dab in the middle of the WrestleMania XXVI card is not one of those times. While it’s short on weaponry, it’s a slog surrounded by matches that do a much better job of rising to the occasion. HHH’s best ‘Mania moments come at the expense of putting somebody else over (Daniel Bryan at XXX, for example, or the Undertaker sagas at 27 & 28, if those are your cup of tea), which he never really gets enough credit for. As a complete WrestleMania resume, however, it’s lacking much depth and something undeniably memorable that’s all his own.

Benoit competed seven times at WrestleMania and the matches range from great to inoffensive. This match against JBL for the United States Championship at ‘Mania 22 is the worst of the bunch, but it’s more bland than it is bad. The worst part comes when JBL hits Benoit with the Three Amigos suplexes in the style of Benoit’s friend Eddie Guerrero, who had passed away just months prior. The entire thing is uncomfortable.

Regardless of quality, watching a Chris Benoit match is difficult. It’s nearly impossible, at least for me, to separate the wrestler from the man and his actions. The circumstances and causes for those horrific few days inside the Benoit household is a discussion for a different day, but in the interest of being a completist, I think ranking his matches here makes sense. It might not be easy, but his contributions to WrestleMania throughout the years (especially as we inch closer to the top of the list) are undeniable, despite the apprehension and confliction.

It was a legitimately shocking outcome that firmly established Lesnar as a dominating, formidable force in the years to come.
When the pandemic started and WrestleMania 36 was the horizon, I decided to make the most of my time and watch every single WrestleMania in order. Questionable use of the phrase “make the most of my time” aside, the binge taught me so much about what makes ‘Mania special, what makes it frustrating and, ultimately, what’s allowed it to persist as the biggest day (or days) on each year’s wrestling calendar.

Along the way, I made a running list of every single ‘Mania match in order of preference. That translates to 356 matches in total.

356.

Sorry, Kickoff Show matches. For the purposes of this exercise, you don’t count.

Now, what makes a memorable WrestleMania match? Of course, it’s mostly to do with the in-ring action itself, but a true ‘Mania classic exists on a different plane. It manages to create an aura all its own, to take on a larger than life persona and, in the best cases, pushes the world of sports entertainment in entirely new directions.

To get to the good, you have to start with the bad. First up, it’s WrestleMania matches 356-301. These range from the offensive to the unfathomable, the lame to the utterly unremarkable. It’s not always pretty and it’s not always fun. But that’s what makes it WrestleMania, baby!

It’s impossible, of course, to discuss WrestleMania and not talk, at length, about The Undertaker. Nobody’s name is more synonymous with the event and nobody has competed at WrestleMania more. ‘Taker has wrestled 27 (!!) times at ‘Mania, winning 25 of those and creating some indelible memories along the way. The truth of the matter, however, is that most of The Undertaker’s WrestleMania matches aren’t very good. Some of them, frankly, are awful. The Hell In A Cell Match against Big Boss Man at WrestleMania XV is one of the awful ones.

It was just the fifth Cell match in history and the first at WrestleMania. It’s also the only Cell match to feature one competitor getting raised to the arena roof with a noose around his neck, so that’s fun! When your career spans decades, not every match is going to be a barnburner, but many of The Undertaker’s matches on the grandest stage fell into the same trap. Far too often, he was pitted against somebody well past their prime, as was the case here. Boss Man joined a line of opponents like Jimmy Snuka and King Kong Bundy, and paved the way for future matches against the likes of Mark Henry. The Undertaker’s WrestleMania legacy is unmatched and undeniable, but his matches frequently missed the mark.

He was directly involved in some of the event’s most instantly iconic matches, so it’s a bummer that his final WrestleMania match was absolutely terrible and ended with him hanging Crush by his feet backstage at Madison Square Garden. Whereas contemporaries like Hogan and Flair would leave the company and then return for epic ‘Mania moments down the road, Savage never got a chance to.
