The pre-show opens once again with Kayla Braxton welcoming us to the show and introducing her panel, tonight consisting of Jerry “the King” Lawler, Booker T, John “Bradshaw” Layfield, and Peter Rosenberg. They set to the task of breaking the card down and previewing it match by match as usual.

The main show kicks off with Ashland Craft singing America the Beautiful for us.

The same intro video from yesterday follows.

Pillar of the community Titus O’Neil and noted racist Hulk Hogan come to the stage dressed as pirates to do some hosting business. They hype up the show and we get into the action.

Randy Orton vs. the Fiend

Alexa Bliss, makeup smeared and petticoats hanging out from under her skirt to a frankly absurd degree, cranks a giant Jack-in-the-Box at ringside to let the Fiend, no longer extra crispy, out.

Diving lariat off the box, we get a bell, big Rock Bottom follows! Bellowing, he takes his time for a followup and Orton bails to the floor. Back suplex into the announce table but the Fiend shrugs it off and applies the mandible claw! Randy fights free and hits the hanging DDT but Wyatt pops up while he’s still recovering! Block the RKO, pass the Fiend face-first into what Michael Cole calls the “box-like structure” or in English, the Jack-in-the-Box.

Garvin Stomp, Bray visibly slowing but able to run the ropes and hit the freight train crossbody into grounded punches! Off the ropes, Orton rolls away from a senton and passes the Fiend to the floor! Back inside, the Viper goes to that special place but Wyatt grabs the mandible claw again! Sister Abigail clutch, ringposts spouting gouts of flame, Alexa Bliss, now wearing a leather vest over a black dress and pouring black ifchor from a crown of thorns, appears atop the box!

Randy takes advantage...

Randy Orton wins by pinfall with the RKO.

Postmatch, Alexa sits there and the Fiend stares. The lights go down.

Pillar of the community Titus O’Neil and Noted Racist Hulk Hogan are backstage chatting with Eric Bischoff when Bayley rolls up.

Bayley apologizes for her fellow co-hosts leaving her out of greeting Bischoff and invites him on Ding Dong, Hello! He begs off but puts Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair from last night over. Bayley tries to get the focus back on her, Eric asks the Hulkster about his new boat and they go off to discuss it, leaving Titus behind with Bayley. He gives her his hat and walks off.

I have to run and use the restroom and this next match doesn’t get a full video package recap, so my lovely wife Josie handles my station for a moment to make sure I don’t miss anything and this is what she has for y’all—

Purple Cat Ears vs. the Bully Broads

Natalya and Tamina warm up. Natalya’s boobs are booblin.

Enter Nya and Shaina. Shaina does some swagger for the crowd, Nya has the EYE OF THE TIGER. A fabulous tiger to be sure, because she’s covered in glitter.

Natalya & Tamina vs. Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler (c) (WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship)

Natalya & Baszler to start, mat grappling, stalemates, and we get tags to the big ladies. Strikes, jockeying for throws, Neidhart and Snuka start running double-teams and suplex Shayna into her own partner! Nattie with a release German suplex, quick tags and Baszler ends up kicking Neidhart square in the teeth! Jax with a slam on Snuka on the floor, Shayna cuts Nattie off and covers her for two.

Tag champs working Neidhart over at length with quick tags and double-teams, the heat segment is on! Nia nearly puts her away with a spinebuster... TAMINA BREAKS IT UP! Tags made, Shayna with leg kicks, Snuka with a dragon screw, boot up in the corner but Baszler wrenches on the foot with a toehold! Booting her down, the damage done, she’s barely able to block the Kirifuda Clutch and turn it into a Samoan Drop for two!

Jockeying for position in the corner, diving crossbody but Nia hurts her knee in the process! To her feet, throwing forearms and jawing at Tamina, she returns a backfist, World’s Strongest Slam... NOT ENOUGH! Snuka up top, Superfly Splash... NO GOOD! Natalya in, basement dropkick, Sharpshooter applied but Shayna breaks it up with a Kirifuda Clutch...

Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler win by submission with the Kirifuda Clutch from Baszler on Natalya to retain the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.

Owens looking for a finish early, taking him to the floor for the apron bomb but Zayn slides back inside and he goes slower with chops instead. Suplex into the ropes, to the apron... SAMI HITS THE BRAINBUSTER ON THE APRON! Back inside, Michinoku Driver connects, still not enough! Owens hits the frog splash, also just two, both men just unloading their entire arsenals as fast as they can!

Pop-up powerbomb blocked, so KO shifts it up, pumphandle... STEENBREAKER ALMOST DOES IT! Jockeying for position, Zayn with the exploder suplex in the corner but Kev sidesteps the Helluva Kick, kick to the gut, Stunner reversed into the Blue Thunder Driver... NOPE! Another corner exploder... HALF & HALF! SHEERDROP BRAINBUSTER! Hockey fight in the corner, just overwhelming punches, referee Jessika Carr backing Sami off and he puts KO up top.

Owens fights back... AVALANCHE FISHERMAN BUSTER! Charging lariats, Zayn cuts him off... HELLUVA KICK! Going for another one but Kev cuts him off with a superkick! Another superkick, the crowd on their feet, kick to the gut...

Kevin Owens wins by pinfall with the Stunner.

Post-match, we get an in-ring confrontation, Logan Paul shoves Sami down and raises Owens’ hand.

KO doesn’t like that, kick to the gut, Stunner!

Matt Riddle is scooting around backstage when he runs into Ranjin Singh and Great Khali. Singh has business to take care of and leaves Riddle to chat with Khali. He tells Great he should open up a store for giants, but he’s not impressed.

Rob Van Dam rolls up to translate, and RVD whips out some branded rolling papers as an example of the creative branding they’ll need to do to make this giant store a success.

Matt Riddle (c) vs. Sheamus (WWE United States Championship)

Sheamus aggressive from the start, side headlock takeover, Riddle fights to his feet, shot off, shoulder block! Working the arm over, Matt fights away for some forearms but the Celtic Warrior cuts him off, float over a slam, sleeper hold applied. the match breaks back down into striking. Kicks out of the corner into a hanging triangle choke for the four count!

Duck a lariat, kidney shot, Beats of the Bodhran, back inside, up top, Riddle runs up there with him, belly-to-belly superplex! Into his usual comeback run, then Riddle hits a Jackhammer... NOT ENOUGH! To the apron, kick gets a wicked knee... TWO FOR SHEAMUS! Alabama Slam, again just two, to the apron, thinking about White Noise but Riddle blocks, posts him, and then hits a German suplex on the apron!

Corkscrew senton, into a triangle choke, Sheamus fights out and clubs him down! Headed up top, Matt slips out, jockeying for position, the Celtic Warrior slips and decides to settle for a normal White Noise! Bombs Away knee drop... NOPE! Brogue Kick ducked, springboard moonsault, Sheamus cuts him off...

Sheamus wins by pinfall with the Brogue Kick to win the WWE United States Championship.

We get a video of Triple H giving Bad Bunny a yellow case and telling him to do what he does best.

He gets on his truck and opens it revealing a microphone, and it turns out to be an ad for his 2022 tour dates.

Apollo Crews vs. Big E (c) (WWE Intercontinental Championship Nigerian Drum Fight)

Both men immediately roll outside for kendo sticks and start wailing on each other with them! Action to the floor, E wants to use a gong that’s at ringside but Crews cuts him off and returns him to the ring. Big hits the suicide spear! Apollo recovers, Death Valley Driver on the apron, cover... NOPE! Crews sets E on the bottom step and grabs the top, ready to drop ‘em but Big rolls away!

Pump kick on the apron, E fires back with a Rock Bottom off the apron and into the stairs! Big maneuvers a table into the ring and pulls Apollo back inside, where he cuts the champ off with an enzuigiri and wallops him with kendo stick shot after kendo stick shot, shattering the black over his back! Up top, frog splash but E rolls away and Crews crashes through the table!

E gets him up for the Big Ending but Dabba-Kato slides in the ring and beats E up! Chokeslam! He drags Crews over...

Asuka off the ropes, dropkick, Ripley shrugs it off so she goes striking, rolling solebutt, wheelbarrow victory roll, backslide, another dropkick puts Rhea in the corner. Sidestep a hip attack, boots up, overhand chop to the champ! Drop toehold into the turnbuckles, Ripley bails and Asuka dances in the ring while referee Darrick Moore counts.

Outside, Alarm Clock knee, back inside, Rhea regains control with a release back suplex facebuster! Bodyscissors applied, Ripley raining forearms down on the back of her head, disdainful slaps, cranking Asuka’s neck while she tries to fight back. Broken free, Rhea nails her with a dropkick! Handful of hair, slap, short-arm lariats, Asuka picks the leg into a kneebar!

Ripley posting on her hands, trying to relieve the pressure, she gets up on one foot, wheelbarrow German suplex... NOPE! Putting Asuka into the turnbuckles, elbow to the kidneys, pushing the champion around, getting her up top, jockeying for position, the Empress knocks her down, missile dropkick connects! German suplex follows, hip attack in the corner, Uraken, reverse roundhouse and Rhea drops to one knee!

Back inside, sliding knee gets Asuka a nearfall! Kawada Kicks, off the ropes, sliding knee countered and Rhea puts boots to her! Up into the cloverleaf, the Empress reverses into a cross armbar, Ripley powers out of it and swings her into the turnbuckles to break it! Going back to the armbar, Rhea breaks it, Asuka Lock attempt, reverse into a pin to break it!

Chest kicks from the champion, off the ropes, Ripley catches her, Riptide... IT’S OVER!

Reigns tells the commentary team to back off and clears the announce table with Uso’s help. Bryan with a suicide dive that takes Roman out and Jey lays him out with another superkick! Edge reverses a whip and Uso goes into the steel steps hard! Chasing after Reigns, putting him into the apron and the barricade repeatedly! A shot into the post punctuates and the Rated-R Superstar is in control!

Edge with an Impaler DDT to Jey on the steel steps! He goes back in the ring with Bryan and they square up! Trading forearms, Dan with a drop toehold into the turnbuckles and chest kicks after! To that end, there’s rain in the forecast for the Tampa area tonight (Sat., April 10) which just so happens to be night one of the biggest WWE show of the year.

Fans had already arrived at the venue to be seated for the show, and those fans have been evacuated to the concourses while waiting for the weather to improve.

The match

Roman Reigns defends the Universal championship against Edge and Daniel Bryan in the main event of night two of WrestleMania 37 on Sun., April 11, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The story

There are two stories at play here, reality and what we’ve been presented on television.

What we’ve been presented on television has been quite simple: Edge won the Royal Rumble, decided he was wrestling Reigns for the Universal championship at WrestleMania but decided to string him along for a while to mess with his head, Bryan took advantage of that time to position himself as the rightful top contender, and Adam Pearce found himself needed to please everyone and ultimately making the match a triple threat.

Edge has really put the story over the top as the guy who started out simply trying to achieve a dream of making a return and winning back the title he never lost to letting that corrupt him when Bryan started standing in the way of it. He’s always worked better as a heel, certainly, but this is a particularly interesting turn for his character because, well, it’s entirely understandable that he would act this way.

You almost empathize with him.

But you also can’t help but feel the same for Bryan, a natural babyface who feels impossible to boo who has definitely been screwed over the past couple months in regards to his spot in the Universal title picture.

Reigns, for his part, is a spectacular bad guy who will do anything to keep his spot at the head of the table. It’s made for an interesting dynamic, and the three of them should deliver a good match to top off the story.

Perhaps the best part? It’s hard telling who is going to win.

The second story, the reality, is that these are three men, Joe, Adam, and Bryan, who all had this taken from them through no fault of their own and each one of them battled back to return to doing what they love. Edge had neck problems, Bryan had concussion issues, and Reigns battled leukemia. Reigns missed a number of months, Bryan a number of years, and Edge was out for a decade.

There’s no better feeling than watching them come back and knowing the joy it brings them.

Like when Reigns told us he was in remission:

Like when Bryan told us he was finally cleared:

Like when his music hit and Edge had to open his eyes just as wide as he could to really believe this was happening again:

So, yeah, there’s a solid story behind it and the match should be good and all and who knows who will win. But, man, this is pretty damn cool.

Drew McIntyre vs. Bobby Lashley (c)

WWE Championship match

The rivalry between Drew McIntyre & Bobby Lashley, one of thee biggest matches of night one of WrestleMania, has various starting points. Most recently it started at Elimination Chamber, when Lashley brutalized then WWE Champion Drew McIntyre, allowing Money in the Bank holder the Miz to capitalize and win the championship.

Or maybe it started at Backlash in June, when Bobby Lashley failed defeat Drew for the WWE title. That wasn’t the same Bobby then, but that loss focused him. This confirmed his decision to stop using his then wife Lana as a manager and go all in with MVP. They built the Hurt Business around him and become a dominant force.

But I like look at this story as one that goes all the way back to 2016, a different year in a different promotion.

In the summer of 2016, TNA was in the process of rehabbing their image. It was something they were always tasked in doing but actually seemed be doing well with at the time. Billy Corgan was a fresh mind driving the product. (This would end before the year was even up when Anthem bought the company and brought back old guard that had an obvious low ceiling.) They amassed a good blend of young and veteran talent. Two of those men, Drew Galloway and Bobby Lashley, were set to main event their Slammiversary pay-per-view.

The WWE was in the rearview mirror for both men, after runs that showed potential that they couldn’t quite capitalize on. Galloway was released in 2014 after the Chosen One was relegated to a comedy act for the end of his run. That was jarring for the Scotsman, and he vowed to find his way back eventually. Lashley was released rather surprisingly in early 2008, not too long after a championship feud with the then unstoppable John Cena. It was less than a year prior that Bobby was in a WrestleMania program featuring Vince McMahon and Donald Trump.

Both men found themselves in TNA to try to reshape their wrestling careers. It wasn’t their only stop. McIntyre wrestled for any independent promotion he could. Lashley had a decent MMA run in Bellator. But TNA was the best place for them to prove that when it came to professional wrestling, they were more than what was remembered from their time in WWE.

Both men improved drastically during their post-WWE careers, showcased weekly on TNA, one of the few televised spots fans could see them. McIntyre focused his passion on the business, which ended up a crucial aspect of his characters in this era. And Bobby Lashley found his personality during his time in Impact, something that was lacking in his first run in the E. His run with the gold after Slammiversary was, at the time, the best work of the man’s career. He had finally found the personality to go with his physique and talent.

It’s clear that folks in WWE were paying attention because both men found their way back to New York. Drew via NXT, Lashley right to Raw. And while it wasn’t smooth for either man (remember Lashley’s sisters?), they both endured to find themselves, once again, face to face for a championship. This time, it’s on wrestling’s biggest stage.

The story on paper is one of a man who connived his way into a WWE title match and the fiery babyface who will fight to get it back. The Scottish Psychopath vs. the All Mighty. But I like to look at it as two guys who were released from the company, reinvented themselves in a small pond, and returned to finally climb to the top the mountain.

Everything else is gravy.

Sasha Banks (c) vs. Bianca Belair
SmackDown Women’s Champion

Bianca Belair won the 2021 Royal Rumble and, after some showy waffling, chose to face the SmackDown women’s champion, Sasha Banks, at WrestleMania 37. What started as a friendly competition between two outstanding athletes quickly turned into a feud built of animosity and antagonism.

<div data-anthem-component="actionbox" data-anthem-component-data='{"title":"WrestleMania have you in the mood for merch?","description":"Homage will help you pay homage to your favorite WWE stars, shows and matches of yesteryear in comfort and style. The Road to WrestleMania 37

The moment Bianca Belair chose Sasha Banks as her opponent for WrestleMania, both competitors knew that it would be a historic match. Sasha Banks is the blueprint, and Bianca Belair is the EST. They are, simply put, the best of the best, and this match is a celebration of both women’s wrestling and black excellence.

For a few weeks, the duo became just that - a duo. They both respected the hell out of each other and were excited to compete at WrestleMania. No need to start a feud! Mutual respect enough to drive the story, right? Wrong!

In an entirely unnecessary and convoluted storyline that included Carmella, the tag team titles, and a Cirque du Soliel sommelier, Bianca and Sasha realized friendship in wrestling is overrated and that they did, in fact, hate each other.

Sasha Banks sees Bianca Belair as a cocky upstart not worth the hype, while Bianca sees Sasha as a champion afraid of real competition.

Tonight they both put their money where their slaps are, and we learn who the real EST of WWE is.

What’s at stake?

Main eventing any PPV is a big deal. Main eventing WrestleMania is the biggest deal. Not only do these two competitors have to deal with that pressure, but they have to deal with the pressure of this being a history-making event. Although the times-they-are-a-changing, it is still slightly unusual for a women’s match to main event a PPV. Each time one does, there is the added pressure of “we have to work twice as hard as the men to have this match be considered acceptable.” Throw in the fact that this is also historical because it’s two black women in the WrestleMania main event slot, and yeah, I’d say they are both feeling the pressure.

In more individualistic terms, the pressure is on Sasha Banks here to break her impressive loss streak at WrestleMania. She’s never won on the grandest stage of them all - could this be her night?

For Bianca Belair tonight, it’s her chance to prove that she really is the EST of WWE. Since she won the Royal Rumble, the buzz around her has been palpable. She is someone the WWE Universe wants to succeed - not even Reginald could ruin that! She has all the makings of a big babyface star. If she becomes champion tonight, that dream becomes a reality.

This has to be pretty much the best match either of them has ever had because all eyes are on them. People are either going to walk away saying, “Yes! That was everything I wanted!” or “I was expecting so much more.” So yeah, no pressure.

WrestleMania 37 takes place tonight (Apr. 10) and tomorrow night (Apr. 11) at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, with the main card beginning at 8 pm ET on Peacock.

WWE has announced seven different segments for the main card of Night One. Here is my subjective view of how important each of these seven segments rank, ordered from most important to least important.

Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair

Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre

Braun Strowman vs. Shane McMahon

Bad Bunny & Damian Priest vs. Miz & John Morrison

Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins

New Day vs. Styles & Omos

Tag Team Turmoil

It seems to me like there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll see Bayley’s talk show on Night One, so I’m adding an eighth segment to this card.

Opening match & Main event

WWE is making this one easier for me by already announcing that Banks vs. Belair will be the main event, and Lashley vs. McIntyre will open the card.

There is only one match on this card that has been presented on television as a main event level match, and that’s Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre. Over the last two months, WWE has failed to come up with a single angle, match, or segment featuring Banks & Belair that could even plausibly main event a basic episode of their regular television shows. The build to this WrestleMania match has been a significant letdown.

The reason why Banks vs. Belair is still the most important match of the night is because it’s about representation, and that transcends how the match has been presented on television.

That gives me the following card:

Segment 1: Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre
Segment 2:
Segment 3:
Segment 4:
Segment 5:
Segment 6:
Segment 7:
Segment 8: Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair

Segment 2 and Segment 7

I don’t think WWE will immediately go to the part-timers (McMahon) or celebrities (Bad Bunny) for Segment 2, so that leaves Rollins, New Day, or Tag Turmoil for that spot.

WWE will probably try to build up Drew McIntyre’s crowning moment in Segment 1 as big as possible. Therefore the least important match of the night can go in Segment 2. That’s where I’ll put Tag Turmoil.

As for the back end of the card, I don’t see the need for a cooldown match because this card isn’t bloated. I’ll put the most important remaining match in Segment 7, which is the steel cage match with Strowman and McMahon.

That gives me the following card:

Segment 1: Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre
Segment 2: Tag Team Turmoil
Segment 3:
Segment 4:
Segment 5:
Segment 6:
Segment 7: Braun Strowman vs. Shane McMahon
Segment 8: Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair

Everything else

I’m not really sure where to go from here, so I’ll try to alternate singles and tag matches. Cesaro’s match looks like a good fit for Segment 3.

I don’t think WWE will put Bad Bunny and Shane McMahon back-to-back, so I’ll stick Bunny in Segment 4.

That leaves Bayley’s talk show for Segment 5, and New Day for Segment 6.

Finalized card

So here is my final prediction for the match order for Night One of WrestleMania 37, along with guesses on the bell-to-bell match times:

WWE has announced seven different segments for the main card of Night Two. Here is my subjective view of how important each of these seven segments rank, ordered from most important to least important.

Reigns vs. Bryan vs. Edge

The Fiend vs. Randy Orton

Asuka vs. Rhea Ripley

Big E vs. Apollo Crews

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

Riddle vs. Sheamus

Baszler & Jax vs. TBA

Opening match & Main event

The main event of this card is obvious. There’s no way anything other than the Universal championship triple threat match closes out Night Two of WrestleMania 37.

The card should open with a banger match. Let’s go with a case of déjà vu and book Rhea Ripley to open Night Two for the second straight year.

That gives me the following card:

Segment 1: Asuka vs. Rhea Ripley
Segment 2:
Segment 3:
Segment 4:
Segment 5:
Segment 6:
Segment 7: Reigns vs. Bryan vs. Edge

End of the card

The Fiend’s match is far and away the most important remaining match on the slate. I don’t think it should go back-to-back with the main event. So I’ll put in in Segment 5, and throw the least important match of the night in between them. That means Baszler & Jax go in Segment 6.

That gives me the following card:

Segment 1: Asuka vs. Rhea Ripley
Segment 2:
Segment 3:
Segment 4:
Segment 5: The Fiend vs. Randy Orton
Segment 6: Baszler & Jax vs. TBA
Segment 7: Reigns vs. Bryan vs. Edge

Everything else

The least important remaining match will go in Segment 2, so that’s Sheamus and <s>Matt</s> Riddle.

Ripley & Sheamus in the first two matches kicks off the card with some high quality standard wrestling matches, so we might as well change up the pace and go with a gimmick match for Segment 3. That’s the mysterious Nigerian Drum fight between Big E and Crews.

That leaves Owens, Zayn, and Logan Paul for Segment 4.

Finalized card

So here is my final prediction for the match order for Night Two of WrestleMania 37, along with guesses on the bell-to-bell match times:

Segment 1: Asuka vs. Rhea Ripley (15 minutes)
Segment 2: Riddle vs. Sheamus (14)
Segment 3: Big E vs. Apollo Crews (12)
Segment 4: Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn (13)
Segment 5: The Fiend vs. Randy Orton (16)
Segment 6: Baszler & Jax vs. TBA (7)
Segment 7: Reigns vs. Bryan vs. Edge (27)

That’s my prediction for the match order at WrestleMania 37. What’s yours?
