When a WWE pay-per-view (PPV) event is on the horizon, the staff of Cageside Seats usually offers predictions for all of the advertised matches on the card. This data can be used to calculate a simple predictability rating for any event.

Six different staff members predicted the winners for the matches that took place on Oct. 25 at Hell in a Cell 2020. Staff members received credit for a correct prediction of the winner of any match, even if they were wrong about the context of that victory.

The Cageside Seats match preview articles for Hell in a Cell also offered polls allowing Cagesiders the chance to weigh in with their predictions.

The following chart contains the prediction results for these matches. The leftmost column includes the match list. Below each staff member’s name, the number “1” is a correct prediction and the number “0” is an incorrect prediction. Empty boxes indicate where no prediction data was available. The rightmost column contains the overall predictability rating for every match, and the very last row shows the overall accuracy of each individual staff member.

Even though Bobby Lashley vs. SLAPJACK was the greatest match in the history of our sport, it’s omitted here because it was not advertised in advance of the event. The pre-show match between R-Truth and Drew Gulak was also not advertised early enough to be included in the results.

The line for Otis’ match can be interpreted as follows: “3 out of 7 predictions for Otis vs. Miz were correct, which is a predictability rating of 42.9%.”

These numbers add up to 22 correct predictions and 13 incorrect predictions, which means the overall predictability rating for Hell in a Cell 2020 is 62.9%.

This decreases the overall predictability rating for 2020 WWE PPVs from 65.7% down to 65.5% (329 correct vs. 173 incorrect predictions). For comparison’s sake, the overall predictability ratings each year from from 2015 through 2019 were 63.4%, 61.1%, 61.6%, 58.7%, and 63.7%, respectively.

Now here are the voting percentages from the Cageside community polls for the winners of these matches:

91%: Roman Reigns over Jey Uso

60%: Elias over Jeff Hardy

40%: The Miz over Otis

69%: Sasha Banks over Bayley

44%: Randy Orton over Drew McIntyre

This event ended in something of a surprise when Randy Orton defeated Drew McIntyre to win the WWE championship. There were rumors that the plan was for Orton to hold the title until he fights Edge next year at WrestleMania 37. Yet here we are three weeks later, and Drew has already reclaimed the gold from Randy.

So, why exactly did Orton win at Hell in a Cell if he was just going to drop it back to McIntyre a few weeks later? Maybe Vince McMahon changed course when he realized a Survivor Series main event between Orton and Roman Reigns was not an adequate attraction? Perhaps the Hell in a Cell booking was just a way to extend their feud with the goal of popping a Raw rating for Drew’s revenge? Maybe it’s because McIntyre’s title loss was a better way to lead him into adopting an entrance with a giant sword that causes eruptions of flame?

Not every title reigns needs to be a long one, and prior to Orton’s 22 day reign here, we haven’t had a short WWE championship reign in 3.5 years. Coincidentally, the last brief reign also belongs to Orton, when he only held the title for 49 days following his victory over Bray Wyatt in 2017 at WrestleMania 33. None of the six champions in between held the title for anything short of 145 days, per CageMatch’s database.

McIntyre’s title reign was getting a bit long in the tooth due to a lack of interesting opponents. The title loss here allowed him to add a giant sword to his entrance, start some trouble with Roman Reigns, and reignite a friendship with Sheamus. The outcome at Hell in a Cell was not the easiest result to see coming, but at the end of the day, I’d say everything worked out well.

The only other match on the card that caused prediction trouble was Otis losing the Money in the Bank briefcase against The Miz. This outcome created something close to a 50-50 split among the Cageside Staff as well as the community voters, so it wasn’t a major upset. But unlike wins for Roman Reigns and Sasha Banks, this story had multiple plausible paths to take, which made it harder to know which direction WWE was headed in.

The staff of Cageside Seats had a decent night with predicting the winners at Hell in a Cell 2020. How did you fare, Cagesiders?

Some places do power rankings. Here at Cageside, we do a stock report.

In this weekly series, we identify three Superstars (or groups of Superstars) who are on their way up, and three that are moving in the opposite direction. After a busy week that included Hell in a Cell 2020 and all of its fallout, a lot of fortunes were changed.

With that in mind, let’s see whose stock has increased the most this week:

Stock Up #3: Bianca Belair

Bianca Belair was moved over to SmackDown during the WWE Draft, and things are beginning on a high note for her. She defeated Natalya and Billie Kay in a triple threat match on this week’s (Oct. 30) episode in order to qualify for the SmackDown women’s team at Survivor Series.

Stock Up #2: Sasha Banks

Banks gained revenge on her former best friend at Hell in a Cell by ending Bayley’s lengthy reign as SmackDown women’s champion. These two stars stole the show and proved that they should have been booked in the main event match on the card.

Stock Up #1: Randy Orton

Orton became a 14-time WWE champion by defeating Drew McIntyre at Hell in a Cell. The Viper now has a long list of superstars looking to get a piece of him, including Bray Wyatt, Edge, The Miz, and McIntyre. He’s also booked in a match against Roman Reigns at Survivor Series, which could very well be the main event of the card. So you better get used to seeing Randy involved in the top stories on Raw for another six months or so, because there’s no end in sight for his current push.

Now let’s see whose stock has decreased the most this week:

Stock Down #3: Riddle

Matt Riddle’s losing ways continued on this week’s (Oct. 26) Raw when he couldn’t figure out a way to beat Sheamus. A few days later he lost his first name, because Vince McMahon is an out of touch old man with some absolutely baffling quirks when it comes to wrestler names. It’s going to be really hard not to laugh or cringe every time he is now referred to simply as “Riddle.”

Stock Down #2: RETRIBUTION

RETRIBUTION still has not won a match. SLAPJACK was easily defeated by Bobby Lashley in a five star match at Hell in a Cell, and then the Hurt Business prevailed over this inept faction in an 8-man elimination tag team match on Raw. The only pinfall that RETRIBUTION could muster came on a distraction roll up after RECKONING was possessed and fell to the mat scratching herself. Lashley was counted out shortly thereafter, and it seemed like RETRIBUTION had a path to victory. But their leader (Mustafa Ali) couldn’t even score a pin over the two least prominent members of the Hurt Business, Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander.

Ali tried to cut a promo afterwards explaining that they win when you suffer. His words are easy to dismiss because nobody ever suffers in the presence of RETRIBUTION. Not unless suffering consists of falling victim to a distraction roll up. RETRIBUTION continues to be the laughingstock of WWE.

Stock Down #1: Otis

Otis lost his Money in the Bank contract to the Miz at Hell in a Cell. In some ways this was easy to see coming, because it’s hard to imagine Otis taking a major title off top wrestlers like Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, Bray Wyatt, and Randy Orton. Plenty of fans wanted the briefcase to be moved off Otis, and they got their wish on Sunday.

But considering how Miz was booked this summer against former Universal champion Braun Strowman, where Strowman easily dispatched of him and John Morrison despite the numbers disadvantage, it’s just as difficult to see Miz taking a major title off the current top wrestlers; the days of the Miz as a believable threat to a top singles title expired years ago.

Prior to Hell in a Cell, the last time Miz won a match of any kind was on the May 8 episode of SmackDown. I’ll rephrase those words to let it truly sink in: the Miz had zero wins across a nearly six month span. The Miz went right back to losing on this week’s Raw, because that’s what he does. The Miz may not be a strict comedy wrestler like Otis, but the booking results over the last six months suggest that he’s even more out of place as the Money in the Bank contract holder than Otis.

Therefore this looks like a case where WWE has decided that the MITB holder is going to fail this year, and they prefer for Miz to be the guy who fails instead of Otis. That’s fine and all, but WWE never should have given Otis the briefcase to begin with if they didn’t think he was a credible contender for the gold. Otis was a big enough deal to make the new SmackDown banner after the WWE Draft. But now he is severely damaged as a result of losing the briefcase and no longer being on the same show as Mandy Rose or Tucker.

There you have it, Cagesiders. Whose stock do you think has changed the most this week?

These times add up to 1h 45m 15s, which is roughly 59.3% of the show. For comparison’s sake, the overall match time percentage for all WWE PPVs since the start of 2013 is 54.1%.

The match time for McIntyre vs. Orton does not include the 2+ minute brawl that occurred outside the cell before the bell rang to officially begin the match.

The disparity in match times makes it very clear that this was a three match card. On the one hand, having three HIAC matches on one card with an average time of 28m 43s doesn’t seem ideal. But when the best idea that WWE can come up with for an additional match is Lashley vs. SLAPJACK, that pretty much rules out swapping the excess cell time for more inconsequential filler matches. The alternative, of course, would be to plan ahead better so that there isn’t an incomplete card on the morning of the show that will require three of the matches to run extra long.

Are you surprised by any of these results, Cagesiders? Which of these matches received less (or more) time than you hoped for?

Welcome to Cageside Community Star Ratings for Hell in a Cell 2020!

For some wrestling fans, star ratings are a way of life. It’s one thing to say that a match is good or bad, but can you actually put a number on it?

The star rating system is a scale ranging from 0 to 5 with increments of 0.25. A 5-star match is as close to perfect as it gets while a 0-star match is a complete dud.

Determining the star rating for a given match is a highly subjective process. In general the goal is to wrap up all the important elements of a match into one simple number. Some factors to consider may include the story and booking of the match, the workrate of the performers, ring psychology, length of the match, audience reaction, and so forth.

There is no such thing as a wrong answer, because every wrestling fan consumes this art form in a different way.

The purpose of Cageside Community Star Ratings is for the readers to assign star ratings to every single match on a given WWE pay-per-view event. These results will be tabulated and summarized after every match on the pay-per-view has been voted on by the community.

The next match up for debate from Hell in a Cell is Roman Reigns versus Jey Uso.

Real world got you down?

Can I interest you in a rivalry between Drew Gulak, a true disciple of Daniel Bryan in that technical wrestling is just one tool in his "total entertainer" toolkit, and Little Jimmy, R-Truth’s imaginary child friend?

It heated up last night on the Hell in a Cell Kickoff, when Gulak lured Jimmy in for a punt. My personal highlight of this clip is Samoa Joe yelling “STRANGER DANGER!”

In the wake of his loss to Truth in the 24/7 title match that followed, Gulak isn’t letting up online...

And look, if that doesn’t do anything for you, the match between Gulak and Truth was pretty good, too! Whether he’s channeling his childhood hero John Cena or not, Ron Killings is the total package of laughs and work rate, too.

Don’t sleep on either of the Philadelphia Stretcher’s current feuds, is what I’m saying.
