Every month we take a look at which WWE stars have currently wrestled on the most consecutive pay-per-view (PPV) events. The only rules are that the superstar must have wrestled for more than zero seconds on the main card of the PPV (sorry, pre-show fans), typical 24/7 title shenanigans will be ignored, and events in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are omitted from this exercise.

WWE ran two such events on the final weekends in August, so both PPVs will be covered in this post, one at a time.

15 unique performers competed in a match on the main card of SummerSlam 2020 on Aug. 23. Here were the active streaks coming out of that event.

SummerSlam and Payback aired on consecutive Sundays, laying the foundation for some top stars to miss the latter card. That’s exactly what happened, with both Asuka and Drew McIntyre failing to wrestle at Payback. Asuka’s streak of 10 events began last October, in a tag team match with Kairi Sane against Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross at Hell in a Cell 2019.
Braun Strowman’s streak of eight events is currently leading the way heading into Clash of Champions 2020 on Sept. 27. His recent Universal championship loss and transition to Raw Underground currently leaves him not booked for the PPV, with only a few days until showtime.

In fact, just about everyone with an active streak greater than one is vulnerable heading into Clash of Champions, outside of Bayley and Randy Orton.

What do you think about this list of active streaks, Cagesiders? Which wrestler is most likely to fall off the list next?

When a WWE pay-per-view (PPV) event is on the horizon, the staff of Cageside Seats usually offers predictions for all of the advertised matches on the card. This data can be used to calculate a simple predictability rating for any event.

Six different staff members predicted the winners for the matches that took place on Aug. 30 at Payback 2020. Staff members received credit for a correct prediction of the winner of any match, even if they were wrong about the context of that victory.

The Cageside Seats match preview articles for Payback also offered polls allowing Cagesiders the chance to weigh in with their predictions.

The following chart contains the prediction results for these matches. The leftmost column includes the match list. Below each staff member’s name, the number “1” is a correct prediction and the number “0” is an incorrect prediction. Empty boxes indicate where no prediction data was available. The rightmost column contains the overall predictability rating for every match, and the very last row shows the overall accuracy of each individual staff member.

Ruby Riott’s match was omitted because it was not advertised early enough.

The line for Bayley’s match can be interpreted as follows: “5 out of 7 predictions for Bayley’s match were correct, which is a predictability rating of 71.4%.”

These numbers add up to 26 correct predictions and 17 incorrect predictions, which means the overall predictability rating for Payback 2020 is 60.5%.

This decreases the overall predictability rating for 2020 WWE PPVs from 64.0% down to 63.6% (266 correct vs. 152 incorrect predictions). For comparison’s sake, the overall predictability ratings each year from from 2015 through 2019 were 63.4%, 61.1%, 61.6%, 58.7%, and 63.7%, respectively.

Now here are the voting percentages from the Cageside community polls for the winners of these matches:

76%: Bobby Lashley over Apollo Crews

93%: Big E over Sheamus

84%: Matt Riddle over King Corbin

69%: Jax & Baszler over Banks & Bayley

52%: Lee over Orton

49%: The Mysterios over Rollins & Murphy

64%: Reigns over Wyatt (36%) and Strowman (1%)

The main thing that stands out to me about the results is how nobody really bought into the idea that Braun Strowman had a chance to win the Universal title triple threat match against Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns. None of the Cageside staff picked him, and only 4 out of 544 community voters picked him.

Even when a match appears to have an obvious winner or loser, there will always be some people out there who go against the expected outcome. But the extremely lopsided vote against Strowman reached a level that surprised me. With so few people expecting him to be a serious contender in the match, I wonder how it affected fan perception of the match that it was just him and Wyatt battling it out for the overwhelming majority of the time, with Reigns not appearing until the final two or three minutes.

The other thing that stands out to me is that the community vote was pretty much split 50/50 for both Keith Lee and The Mysterios. WWE managed to develop those stories in such a way that it was hard to have high confidence in the outcome in either direction.

The staff of Cageside Seats had an okay night with predicting the winners at Payback 2020. How did you fare, Cagesiders?

Some places do power rankings. Here at Cageside, we do a stock report.

In this weekly series, we identify three Superstars (or groups of Superstars) who are on their way up, and three that are moving in the opposite direction. After a busy week that included Payback 2020 and all of its fallout, a lot of fortunes were changed.

With that in mind, let’s see whose stock has decreased the most this week:

Stock Down #3: John Morrison & The Miz

WWE continues to waste away John Morrison’s talents. He and Miz lost a tag match against Heavy Machinery this week (Sept. 4) on SmackDown, and Morrison then considered eating Otis’ lunch sandwich afterwards. Morrison doesn’t come off like a star at all with this kind of booking.

Stock Down #2: Lana & Natalya

When Lana and Natalya formed a new partnership back in June, it at least seemed possible that WWE had a significant creative direction planned for them. Instead, they usually cut bad BOAT promos, and have spent the last couple weeks getting beaten up by Mickie James. It looks like Lana and Natalya are going nowhere fast.

Stock Down #1: Billie Kay

The IIconics were forced to split up after losing a tag team match on Raw, and then Peyton Royce fed Billie Kay to the wolves on Raw Underground. It sounds like their partnership was ended because a singles push is planned for Peyton Royce. None of this is good news for Billie Kay.

Now let’s see whose stock has increased the most this week:

Stock Up #3: Keith Lee

Lee made quick work of Randy Orton in his first WWE pay-per-view match, at Payback 2020. The Limitless One followed this up the next night (Aug. 31) on Raw with a victory over Dolph Ziggler. Later in the episode, his Spirit Bomb was too much for Seth Rollins to handle, even though Lee was unable to take advantage for the pin.

Rumors suggest that Vince McMahon wants to push Lee to the moon, and this week’s booking was a pretty good start.

Stock Up #2: Roman Reigns & Paul Heyman

Roman Reigns has been back in WWE for less than two weeks and is already the Universal champion. Paul Heyman cut a great promo on SmackDown making it clear that Roman Reigns is the one who has corrupted him, and not the other way around. With Jey Uso emerging as Roman’s first challenger at Clash of Champions 2020, WWE has a great opportunity to firmly establish Roman as the most despicable wrestler in the promotion once he (presumably) destroys his own bloodline. Reigns’ heel turn is working out amazingly well thus far.

Stock Up #1: Sasha Banks & Bayley

It’s not common for a team to lose two matches and championship gold in one week but still wind up in a great position, yet that’s where Bayley and Banks find themselves. This long-term story has been brewing for months, and WWE finally pulled the trigger on their breakup this week, when Bayley turned on Sasha.

It was a brutal beatdown that instantly turns Sasha into a mega babyface, and positions her as the obvious person to end Bayley’s long reign as SmackDown women’s champion. As for Bayley, this is the kind of story that could possibly land her a pay-per-view main event. No matter where this feud goes from here, it should remain the top women’s storyline in WWE for quite some time.

There you have it, Cagesiders. Whose stock do you think has changed the most this week?

Welcome to Cageside Community Star Ratings for Payback 2020!

For some wrestling fans, star ratings are a way of life. It’s one thing to say that a match is good or bad, but can you actually put a number on it?

The star rating system is a scale ranging from 0 to 5 with increments of 0.25. A 5-star match is as close to perfect as it gets while a 0-star match is a complete dud.

Determining the star rating for a given match is a highly subjective process. In general the goal is to wrap up all the important elements of a match into one simple number. Some factors to consider may include the story and booking of the match, the workrate of the performers, ring psychology, length of the match, audience reaction, and so forth.

There is no such thing as a wrong answer, because every wrestling fan consumes this art form in a different way.

The purpose of Cageside Community Star Ratings is for the readers to assign star ratings to every single match on a given WWE pay-per-view event. These results will be tabulated and summarized after every match on the pay-per-view has been voted on by the community.

The next match up for debate from Payback is Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler.
