WWE Network’s The Day Of special for SummerSlam 2020 debuted on the streaming service this past weekend. The clip making the rounds from the behind-the-scenes look at the Aug. 24 event at Orlando’s Amway Center features Vince McMahon greeting Dominik Mysterio at gorilla position after his match with Seth Rollins.

Of course, it’s unlikely that the Chairman & CEO of WWE was going to have anything but praise for Rey’s son after his PPV debut. But this is still a very nice scene between the man responsible for modern wrestling, and a young man who could play a big role in its future.

“Congratulations. Very few people can get that kind of reaction whenever they’re in the ring, no matter how long they’ve been in the business. So, you should be very, very proud of yourself.”

The cynical take is that Dominik was performing in an empty building, so we don’t really know what kind of reaction he gets. But if you watch the full scene, where Vince greets him after his mother greets him with tears in her eyes and there’s a line of producers waiting to shake the younger Mysterio’s hand, it’s hard to be cynical.

Plus, Dom has proven pretty good at getting reactions out of fans watching on screens around the world, so there’s no need to be a cynic. He’s not there yet, but the kid clearly has the talent and charisma to put it together and get there.

So naturally McMahon’s a fan. And we’re fans of wholesome backstage scenes of Vince. It’s win/win baby!

Just don’t remind mom about the kendo stick beating her boy took prior to SummerSlam. That was too much.

Some places do power rankings. Here at Cageside, we do a stock report.

In this weekly series, we identify three Superstars (or groups of Superstars) who are on their way up, and three that are moving in the opposite direction. After a busy week that included SummerSlam 2020, Keith Lee being called up to Raw, and Sami Zayn returning to SmackDown, a lot of fortunes were changed.

With that in mind, let’s see whose stock has decreased the most this week:

Stock Down #3: Braun Strowman

Strowman’s reign as Universal champion came to an end at SummerSlam. He’s still in a good spot, but he’s hardly living up to his claim that he’s “the most evil son of a bitch” that anyone has ever laid eyes on. Hell, he’s only the third most evil wrestler in his own storyline, and appears to be the obvious guy to take the pin in an upcoming triple threat match against Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt at Payback 2020.

Stock Down #2: Viking Raiders

Following up on Erik being put to sleep by Dolph Ziggler on the previous episode of Raw Underground, this week (Aug. 24) both Erik and Ivar got their asses handed to them (by The Hurt Business) in Shane McMahon’s underground fight club.

Stock Down #1: Drew Gulak and Shorty G

I’m throwing these two together into one entry because they were each presented as jobbers during separate matches last night (Aug. 28) on SmackDown. It’s worse for Gulak because he was completely steamrolled in his match, even though it’s not too long ago that he was pinning AJ Styles and contending for the Intercontinental championship.

Now let’s see whose stock has increased the most this week:

Stock Up #3: Asuka

Asuka regained the Raw women’s championship at SummerSlam when she defeated Sasha Banks. The Empress of Tomorrow then brought that feud to an end when she tapped Banks out again the next night on Raw. Asuka is the clear top babyface in the WWE women’s division.

Stock Up #2: Street Profits

Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford retained the Raw tag team titles at SummerSlam against Andrade and Angel Garza. Ford then defeated Garza in a singles match on Raw the next night. The Street Profits are already the longest reigning Raw tag champs in years, and there doesn’t appear to be much remaining competition that poses a threat.

Montez Ford especially looks like a breakout star; his frog splash finishing move is one of the coolest things in WWE right now.

Stock Up #1: Roman Reigns & Paul Heyman

Roman Reigns delivered on the “You’ll never see it coming!” tagline by returning to WWE at SummerSlam. He aligned himself with Paul Heyman by the end of the week, and already has a chance to become the Universal champion tomorrow night (Aug. 30) at Payback 2020.

Reigns and Becky Lynch are arguably the two biggest stars in WWE, and both have been missing from television for months. The top of the card desperately needed Roman back. He appears to have embraced a new attitude, as well as a mysterious relationship with Paul Heyman, which immediately makes him the most intriguing wrestler in the promotion. Is Roman Reigns finally a heel?

There you have it, Cagesiders. Whose stock do you think has changed the most this week?

When a WWE pay-per-view (PPV) event is on the horizon, the staff of Cageside Seats usually offers predictions for all of the advertised matches on the card. This data can be used to calculate a simple predictability rating for any event.

Six different staff members predicted the winners for the matches that took place on Aug. 23 at SummerSlam 2020. Staff members received credit for a correct prediction of the winner of any match, even if they were wrong about the context of that victory.

The Cageside Seats match preview articles for SummerSlam also offered polls allowing Cagesiders the chance to weigh in with their predictions.

The following chart contains the prediction results for these matches. The leftmost column includes the match list. Below each staff member’s name, the number “1” is a correct prediction and the number “0” is an incorrect prediction. Empty boxes indicate where no prediction data was available. The rightmost column contains the overall predictability rating for every match, and the very last row shows the overall accuracy of each individual staff member.

The line for Drew McIntyre’s match can be interpreted as follows: “4 out of 7 predictions for McIntyre’s match were correct, which is a predictability rating of 57.1%.”

These numbers add up to 37 correct predictions and 19 incorrect predictions, which means the overall predictability rating for SummerSlam 2020 is 66.1%.

This increases the overall predictability rating for 2020 WWE PPVs from 63.6% up to 64.0% (240 correct vs. 135 incorrect predictions). For comparison’s sake, the overall predictability ratings each year from from 2015 through 2019 were 63.4%, 61.1%, 61.6%, 58.7%, and 63.7%, respectively.

Now here are the voting percentages from the Cageside community polls for the winners of these matches:

65%: Apollo Crews over MVP

40%: Bayley over Asuka

42%: Street Profits over Andrade & Garza

83%: Mandy Rose over Sonya Deville

58%: Seth Rollins over Dominik Mysterio

79%: Asuka over Sasha Banks

31%: Drew McIntyre over Randy Orton

90%: Bray Wyatt over Braun Strowman

The results show that the easiest matches of the night to predict were Wyatt defeating Strowman, and Rose beating Deville. The trickiest match for the fan vote was McIntyre beating Orton.

Four of the eight matches were easy to predict, and the Cageside staff didn’t completely whiff on any of the remaining four matches, which means the overall predictability rating remained above average. Overall, the winners of these matches were not hard to see coming, despite the “You’ll never see it coming!” tagline for the pay-per-view.

The Raw women’s championship debuted in mid-2016 when WWE split the Raw and SmackDown brands. According to the data at CageMatch.net, there have been 18 separate championship reigns since the title debuted. Five of those 18 reigns belong to Sasha Banks, which is more than anybody else.

That’s a lot of championship reigns, but Banks is terrible at retaining the title once she wins it. In four of her five reigns, she won the title on an episode of Raw and then lost it on the next pay-per-view event. In all five reigns, Banks lost the championship in her very first televised defense.

Here are all of the relevant details for her five championship reigns:

None of McIntyre’s matches on the first three events felt like they were important enough to main event the card. Money in the Bank’s big attraction was a cinematic ladder match at WWE headquarters. Backlash included “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” between Edge and Orton, which was always the clear main event. Extreme Rules didn’t have an obvious main event match, but being booked in a WWE championship match against mid-carder Dolph Ziggler is a surefire way to not headline a card.

SummerSlam was the card where McIntyre seemingly had the best chance to wrestle in the main event, because WWE’s top babyface (McIntyre) was booked against the top heel (Orton). But there was a big angle planned with the return of Roman Reigns, and that was enough to keep Drew out of the final match of the night.

This actually happened last year as well. Kofi Kingston won the WWE championship at WrestleMania 35 (unlike Drew, his title win was not the main event), and then Kingston held the title into October without ever headlining a PPV as the defending champ. This included two championship defenses on PPV against Dolph Ziggler, because of course it did. Kingston then defended the title against Randy Orton at SummerSlam, in a match that did not have a winner.

So, what does this mean for Drew? Unlike Kingston’s case from 2019, I don’t think this means that Vince McMahon is not sold on McIntyre as the top star in the promotion. The main difference between Kofi and Drew is that McIntyre has the big win over Brock Lesnar, whereas Kingston was presented as being nowhere in Brock’s league. That’s all you need to know to figure out what McMahon thinks of McIntyre in comparison to Kingston.

I think Drew’s lack of main events as the defending champ is largely a reflection of Raw’s dearth of top heels to match him up against. When WWE did finally pair him up with a hot heel for SummerSlam, the match took a backseat to the return of Roman Reigns.

Drew’s absence from the main event is also related to cinematic matches becoming a top focus in WWE during the pandemic era; the main events of Money in the Bank, Backlash, and Extreme Rules were all recorded well ahead of time and did not air live.

The window is now closing on McIntyre’s chances of headlining a PPV during his current WWE championship reign. It looks like he’ll miss the next PPV, Payback 2020 (Aug. 30), as a result of a potential (kayfabe) skull fracture via a whiffed punt from Randy Orton. Assuming McIntyre returns in September, he’ll have to compete with Roman Reigns and The Fiend for PPV main event spots, at least in the short-term. With Roman Reigns back in the fold, Drew McIntyre is no longer the top babyface in WWE.

What do you make of Drew’s inability to main event a PPV as the defending WWE champion?
