Winners Take All Mixed Tag Team Extreme Rules match for the Universal & Raw Women’s championships

Lacey Evans & Baron Corbin vs. Becky Lynch & Seth Rollins (c)

To borrow the title of jukebox romantic musical comedy film based on the music of a 70s Swedish supergroup... Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again.

The Road to Extreme Rules

Taken individually, the match-ups are not new.

Rollins and Corbin have been beefing since before The Shield wrote their final chapter. In fact, the Lone Wolf was part of the trio who did the job for the Hounds of Justice at The Shield’s Final Chapter. Then he lost to the Architect in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and finagled it so he could pick the referee for the rematch at last month’s Stomping Grounds pay-per-view (PPV). But more on that in a minute...

Evans was introduced as Lynch’s main rival on Raw immediately after WrestleMania 35. Though they skipped Super ShowDown for the obvious reason, at both Money in the Bank and Stomping Grounds, The Man made The Lady tap out.

If that doesn’t sound like the set-up for a mixed tag match with both Seth’s Universal title and Becky’s Raw Women’s belt, well, let’s go back to the main event of June’s PPV. It was there that Corbin introduced Lacey as his guest referee:

Since Seth had been attacking any and all potential officials, the idea was here was one he wouldn’t take out. But his girlfriend (did we mention Rollins & Lynch are an item? don’t worry, WWE will remind you many, many times tonight) could, and she did. The Man took out The Lady twice at Stomping Grounds, her man kept his title and... we still weren’t done.

The next night on Raw, Corbin & Evans basically annoyed their way into the match we’re getting tonight. Even though the champs have nothing to prove, they got the heels to agree that in exchange for a Winner Takes All mixed tag at Extreme Rules, Baron & Lacey would leave them alone if the outcome was the same as its been every time they’ve faced off in singles competition.

Lynch & Rollins then won some tune-up matches, and the challengers jumped them after they beat Andrade & Zelina Vega on the ‘go home’ edition of Raw. And here we are.

What’s at stake?

The titles, clearly. And maybe our collective sanity, if we try to figure how an extreme rules stipulation works in a mixed tag match... can the guys hit the women without consequences then? Or is it just no disqualification for intragender action, but intergender stuff still triggers a DQ? Do the belts change hands on a DQ in no DQ match?

Anyway... probably the biggest question is how WWE transitions out of booking Rollins & Lynch as a couple, and if there time together helped, hindered, or had no effect on their popularity. The past two weeks of television seems to indicate the company knows fans aren’t anxious to see more of Lacey or Baron at this point, and they’ll probably drift back to the mid-card after this until Vince McMahon sees another opportunity to push a couple Superstars he clearly believes can be big draws.

While I’ve been critical of the power couple angle from the jump, I really doubt it hurts Becky or Seth much in the long-term. They’ll be as over as their next programs. If WWE can pair them with someone who feels like more of a threat than Corbin and Evans - it shouldn’t be hard - we’ll probably be just as interested in cheering them as we were three or four months ago.

There’s also a chance they’ll have the belts change hands in Philadelphia tonight. But I somehow doubt Paul Heyman wants to start his reign with a pair of champions fans hate for the wrong reasons.

Join us in a few hours and we’ll all find out together. One way or the other, this should all be over soon.

WWE MONEY IN THE BANK LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE

If I saw you now, could I look in your eyes? Do you think of me like I dream of you? Do you wish you were here like I wish I was with you? You’ve loved me before... do you love me now? Does love ever end when two hearts have torn away? Or does it go on and beat strong anyway? You’ve loved me before... do you love me now? Come on back to me right now, and I’ll liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you.

The pre-show kicks off with Jonathan Coachman welcoming us to the show and introducing his panel, comprised of Charly “Guns” Caruso, Sam Roberts, and David Otunga. They run down the card and shill for the WWE Network before beginning their night of preview action with the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match.

Becky Lynch is interviewed backstage.

She says her two opponents tonight know they can’t win on their own, and tonight the odds are even and Lacey Evans is about to find out what Charlotte Flair already knows-- it’s a whole different ballgame one-on-one against The Man. Tonight we’re gonna find out what those two dopes are made of, and Lynch knows the weight of history is on her shoulders and the right road isn’t the easy one.

She didn’t come here to make her title reigns plentiful, she came to make them meaningful, and right now she knows she has two rosters full of women who want what she has. So tonight she’s dishing out double beatings, because that’s what happens when The Man comes around. The panel discusses her matches and we go backstage where Lacey is picking at her opera gloves.

She says Becky talks so much trash and the longer trash sits, the more it rots and eventually you bag it up and take it to the curb, which is exactly where she’s going to end up tonight. But keep talking, because the more she talks, the sweeter taking her title is gonna be. And after she’s cleaned the ring of Becky’s nasty presence, it’ll be Charlotte’s turn to clean the sweep and Lynch’ll realize The Man was no match for a Queen or a Lady.

The panel moves onto a video package and discussion for Kofi Kingston vs. Kevin Owens. Kevin Owens is interviewed backstage and says the way he’s destroyed New Day is proof that he’ll become WWE Champion tonight. He can slap the positivity right off his face, break Kofi’s hand, and no matter how he does this, he’s giving him a much-needed reality check.

The reality is Kingston is a fantastic role model, incredible performer, and all-around nice guy, and he has no issue with him beyond the fact that he’s got the title and he guarantees it’ll be a new day at the end of the night, the first day of Kevin Owens as WWE Champion. The panel then discusses the match before moving onto Reigns vs. Elias and then Shane McMahon vs. the Miz.

Nikki Cross gets a handcam promo saying that she wants to give Alexa Bliss a chance because she’s been nothing but lovely, and it upsets her that Bliss can’t compete, but she’s gonna make the most of her opportunity and be just like her. Let Nikki play, let Nikki claim, let Nikki win. Beth Phoenix and Sonya Deville join the panel to discuss the women’s Money in the Bank match.

Zelina Vega interrupts to start something with Sonya and they bicker at length before we head down to ringside for our first match.

The Usos cut a promo during their entrance, talking about how they’re kicking things off tonight against Spongebob and Patrick and welcome their opponents to the Uso Penitentiary.

Daniel Bryan & Erick Rowan vs. the Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso)

Bryan and Jimmy to start, collar and elbow, side headlock from the American Dragon, shot off, shoulder block, off the ropes, drop down, frotn kick, duck the roundhouse and Uso lands a huge chop! Another one puts Dan in the corner, tag to Jey, in hot with a right, snapmare for two and now he lays a chop in. Blind tag, Bryan slides out, Rowan picks him up, block the sunset flip, off the ropes, freight train crossbody cuts Jey down!

Fired up, putting boots to Jey and knocking him to the floor, back in, putting boots to him, scoop and a slam, off the ropes, big splash... NOPE! Bryan tags back in, front kick, laying into Jey in the corner with chops before taking his leg out and tagging the big man back in. Elbow drop for two, knees to the back and into the double-fisted head vise!

Clear the apron, pose for the crowd, tag to the American Dragon, he sets up the Romero Special but chooses to just hook Jey’s nose repeatedly! Stomp to the knees, drawing Uso up for chops in the corner, and into the running dropkicks! One, two, Jey counters the third with a Samoan drop! Tag to Erick, sidestep the charge, tag to Jimmy! Uso in how with mounted punches, Rowan shoves him off but he charges right back in!

Superkick, big slicing right, Samoan drop countered into a back suplex but he lands on his feet! Boot up on the charge, corkscrew leg drop out of the corner... NOT ENOUGH! Gamengiri connects from the apron, up top, diving crossbody... ERICK CATCHES HIM AND JACKHAMMERS HIM FOR A NEARFALL!

We take an adbreak and come back to both Usos in the corner... DOUBLE SUPERPLEX TAKES THE BROTHERS OUT! Tag to Bryan, chest kicks to a kneeling Uso, going for the buzzsaw finale but he ducks it! 540 enzuigiri gets a superkick gets another superkick in return! Jey heads up top... THE AMERICAN DRAGON CATCHES THE SPLASH INTO THE LEBELL LOCK! USO FRANTICALLY PIVOTS LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT BUT BRYAN HAS HIM TRAPPED! FADING... JIMMY BREAKS IT UP!

Back in, off the ropes... STEREO SUICIDE DIVES! THE AMERICAN DRAGON GOES FOR A DIVE BUT EATS A PAIR OF SUPERKICKS! Jimmy tags in, the brothers headed up top...

The Usos win by pinfall with the tandem diving splashes on Daniel Bryan.

Back to the preshow panel, they shill for the WWE Network and run the card down again before shifting into a video package for AJ Styles vs. Seth Rollins and then discussing that match.

The main show begins with a graphic in the memory of the late Ashley Massaro.

A video package built around the statistics of Money in the Bank plays before seguing into a general hype video for tonight’s show.

Bayley vs. Carmella vs. Dana Brooke vs. Ember Moon vs. Mandy Rose vs. Naomi vs. Natalya vs. Nikki Cross (Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match)

Chaos at the bell, pairing off as Moon and Cross head to the floor. Ember wants to get a ladder but Nikki just wants to trap girls in the apron and beat them up! Sliding a ladder in after she’s had her fill, Cross wipes out all four of the women in the ring before running wild with a ladder spin! Brooke cuts her off and gets into a tug of war over the ladder with Moon and ends up rammed into the corner!

Nikki with a sleeper, Ember counters by leaping back-first into the ladder! Rose throws Moon out, steps up the ladder for a knee strike on Dana and Carmella dumps Mandy out of the ring! Setting the ladder up, Natalya lifts another but Mella cuts her off! Nattie recovers, discus lariat... CATAPULT INTO THE LADDER! Another catapult for Naomi but she lands on her feet and springs off the ladder with a dropkick!

Dumping Carmella to the floor, yanking a ladder away from Rose, tilt-a-whirl slam snuffs the glow out! Hugger in, setting the ladder up, Ember cuts her off, they trade kicks, holding the ladder vertical and Brooke climbs until Carmella comes in and knocks the ladder over! Superkick to clear Bayley out, Mandy kicks the ladder out of Mella’s hand and into her knee!

Carmella pulling herself up the ropes, fending Rose off, Moon decks her with an elbow and ends up in a ladder tug of war with Cross. Naomi springs onto one ladder, walks across both, springboard roundhouse to Mandy! Slide under another ladder and everybody feels the glow! Carmella being checked on by medics as Nattie atomic drops Naomi into a ladder and gets decked by Bayley!

Hugger with a sliding forearm on Naomi, smashing Nikki’s face into the ladder as Mella is escorted to the back! Bayley holding the ladder, Dana from behind, smashing her face into the turnbuckles but Ember hits the kick combo! Dana sidesteps, slam puts Moon into the ladder upside down, handspring back elbow! Pulling the Hugger over, right hands, blocked, Bayley catches a kick and knees her damn head off!

Bayley pulls the ladder out of the corner and opens it up right under the briefcase but Mandy cuts her off. Natalya in and they sandwich the Hugger between halves of the ladder repeatedly! Naomi hits the split-legged moonsault on Bayley on the ladder! Neidhart and Rose setting the ladder back up, Cross with a spear under the ladder, Naomi climbs... BUT EMBER CUTS HER OFF AND HITS A CODEBREAKER!

Cross climbing, Moon cuts her off but Nikki hits the dragon screw neck whip! Dana tips the ladder over Cross! Everybody down, Brooke climbs, Mandy joins her, her hands on are on the briefcase and Rose shoves her off the ladder! DANA BROOKE IS HANGING OFF THE HOOK! She manages to hold on long enough to alight back on the ladder, they brawl, Bayley yanks Mandy down!

Bayley wins by retrieving the briefcase to become Ms. Money in the Bank.

Bayley is interviewed post-match and says she’s proud of everything she and Sasha Banks accomplished but she came to SmackDown to prove a point and tonight she thinks she did just that.

We get a recap of how Sami Zayn came to replace Braun Strowman in the men’s Money in the Bank match.

Backstage, Triple H is on the phone when Sami taps him on the shoulder to ask where Shane is. Hunter says he’s getting ready for his cage match and tries to go back to his conversation but Zayn insists it’s very important. HHH hangs up and gets in his face and Sami says Braun is a problem. Last week he destroyed him to get into the match and now, well, Strowman is predictable and vindictive and wants to hurt him.

He can’t warm up or think straight, and Hunter tells him to breathe and relax. Zayn says he’s cool but he thinks he speaks for the other Raw heels about the Braun Strowman situation, and HHH says Braun’s not even here, he’s been banned from the building. Sami says with all due respect all he’s asking for is protection. Hunter says if he wants protection, tape up his fists and get out of the office.

In the locker room, we see Rey Mysterio getting ready when his son Dominick rolls in.

Rey Mysterio vs. Samoa Joe (c) (WWE United States Championship)

Mysterio in with right hands but a single kick to the leg from Joe stops him short! Another hamstring kick, a third, a Rey firing back, off the ropes, slide low, pop-up, Frankensteiner connects! Forearms in the corner, shoved away, charge in, back body drop to the apron and a gamengiri, springboard seated senton connects! Going for a slam, Rey floats out but Samoa cuts him down with a chop!

Powerbomb lift, reverse...

Rey Mysterio wins by pinfall with a hurricanrana to win the WWE United States Championship.

Dominick comes to ringside to celebrate with his father... UNTIL JOE ATTACKS! Repeated headbutts to Rey, back in the ring, hammering punches to the face, true uranage connects! Joe stares at Dominick and hooks Mysterio... ANOTHER URANAGE! Dominick paces at ringside, concerned, and Samoa drops a senton on Rey!

Joe leaves without issue and commentary discusses his shoulders not being properly down.

We go backstage where Braun Strowman is destroying things and chokes a crew member against a production truck demanding to know where Sami Zayn is.

Shane McMahon vs. the Miz (Steel Cage Match)

McMahon immediately tries to scale the cage but Miz pulls him back down! Double leg into mounted punches, Shane throws him off, back elbow, climbing again and again he’s pulled down! The A-Lister throws him into the cage, McMahon barely hands on and starts climbing but again Miz pulls him down! Hammering him with kicks in the corner, snapmare into a kick to the back, more kicks to the back, vengeance on his mind.

Chest kicks follow, but Shane catches the finale... POWERBOMB INTO THE STEEL CAGE! Choking Miz with a foot against the steel, following it up with the combination punches and smashing him into the steel. Clubbing blows, schoolboy for two, more jabs and then the Muay Thai knees before throwing Miz into the steel! Buzzsaw roundhouse kick, Argentine backbreaker rack... SPUN OUT INTO A NECKBREAKER!

Stomps in the corner set Miz up and McMahon climbs... COAST 2 COAST INTERCEPTED INTO A DOUBLE LEG! Spinning toehold, into the figure four leglock in the middle of the ring! Shane crawls for the corner, breaking the hold, the door is open, upkicks stop Miz... but he grabs McMahon’s ankle again and drags him in! Shane brought a chair with him but the A-Lister kicks it out of his hand!

Both men down and out, Miz gets the chair and McMahon begs off on his knees! Running for the door and the A-Lister waffles him with the chair before shutting the door and raining another chairshot down! Slamming the door on Shane’s face for good measure, more chairshots, dragging him to his feet... SKULL-CRUSHING FINALE ON A CHAIR BUT MCMAHON GETS A FOOT ON THE ROPES!

It shouldn’t matter but referee Rod Zapata stops counting anyway!

Headed up top, full nelson, Shane fights him off and knocks the A-Lister to the mat! McMahon climbing, but Miz is right after him with chair shots to the ankle! Climbing after him, both men atop the cage wall, trading punches, the A-Lister smashing Shane’s face into the cage repeatedly, knocking him down! Up top... DIVING SPLASH ISN’T ENOUGH!

McMahon has the triangle choke on in the middle of the ring! Miz flags but does not fail, bridging into a pin for two! Blocking Shane’s escape, catapult into the steel, again both men jockeying for position atop the cage wall! Front chancery hooked, struggling but Shane slips out, Miz has a solid grip on his t-shirt but McMahon slips through...

Shane McMahon wins by escaping the cage.

Commentary tells us that Mick Foley will be on Raw tomorrow night to announce a new championship.

Triple H and a road agent are running backstage to the scene of some violence. They find Sami Zayn strung up, basically crucified upside down on a bit of cage fencing, and Hunter shoos the camera crew away!

Ariya Daivari vs. Tony Nese (c) (WWE Cruiserweight Championship)

Circling, collar and elbow, Daivari backing Nese into the corner and breaking dirty with puinches! Nese kicking away, duck a roundhouse, leg sweep into a leg drop, only two! Moonsault, land on his feet when nobody’s home and Ariya scrapes his eye across the top rope! Pulling him back inside, right hands, Tony swinging blind and missing as Daivari connects again and again.

Hard whip across, right hands and knees, overrotated back suplex connects and Ariya follows it up with the reverse Boston Crab! Nese uses his leverage to sling him aside, firing off left hands, single knee facebreaker, off the ropes, running knee into a spinning wheel kick! The champion kips up, roundhouse kick from the apron, triangle moonsault... NOPE!

Daivari with back elbows to block the pumphandle, full nelson spun out into an inverted DDT, only two! Nese laying chops in, Ariya grabs his beard to block but gets clocked by a forearm! Off the ropes, met by a charging knee, Daivari goes for a whip, slide through, pumphandle, float over, sidestep the charge and land a roundhouse kick! Setting Tony up top, thinking cross-arm Iconoclasm but it’s blocked!

Chopping away, hanging Nese in a Tree of Woe over the apron before dumping him to the floor! Charging in, up to the apron, off it, forearm staggers Ariya, back in, up top, NOW the cross-arm Iconoclasm hits but it’s not enough to win the title! Trading covers, Daivari to the floor, Nese off the ropes... SASUKE SPECIAL! Back in, up top... 450 SPLASH ISN’T ENOUGH TO KEEP THE TITLE AROUND TONY NESE’S WAIST!

A superkick lays the champ out, up top for the frog splash, pulling him up, hammerlock... NESE KICKS OUT OF THE PEPSI TWIST! Tony hits the Shotei in the corner, avalanche Frankensteiner puts him in place...

Tony Nese wins by pinfall with the running knee to retain the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.

Backstage, Triple H runs into Braun Strowman.

He says he gets what he’s doing, but if he thinks he’s gonna take Sami Zayn’s place after what he did, it’s not happening. Strowman says he’s got no idea what he’s talking about and Hunter insists that he did.
SmackDown Women’s championship match

Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch (c)

Breaking down the latest in a what has lately been a surprisingly one-sided rivalry.

The Road to Money in the Bank

In 2018, The Lasskicker became The Man and everything about this rivalry flipped on its head.

Charlotte, a 4-time Raw Women’s Champion and a 3-time SmackDown Women’s Champion, always seemed to be able to get a victory when it mattered most against Lynch. At least that’s what it felt like, right? Charlotte Flair was the daughter to wrestling royalty and constantly in the hunt for championships. Lynch? She was still finding her way top.

But then “The Man” happened and...well. Lynch has evolved into something Charlotte’s been unable to solve. In fact, here’s a trivia question for you, Cagesiders: when was the last time that Charlotte was able to cleanly defeat Lynch?

…

…

Ready for the answer?

SummerSlam 2018.

That’s right; it’s been nearly a year. Lynch got the best of Charlotte at Evolution. She got the best of the Queen in the Royal Rumble. The Man stood tall yet again at WrestleMania. An interesting side effect of these losses has been the toll they’ve taken on Charlotte; she’s become increasingly vicious in the ring and arrogant when it comes to her own talents. In fact, she’s been looking for any reason she can to claim superiority over Lynch.

Even more notably, it seems like no one’s buying Charlotte’s inherent superiority anymore. After falling to Lynch again at WrestleMania, Charlotte wanted another shot at the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship. And sure, she never got pinned; but how many shots are you supposed to get?

What’s at stake?

That’s the most engaging part of this story, I’d say. Not only are the SmackDown Women’s Championship and Charlotte’s sanity at stake, but the outcome of this match might also have an impact on the Raw Women’s Championship. Lynch is fighting twice at Money in the Bank, and you know that’s the sort of thing that must be driving Charlotte nuts.

She demands attention, and she demands respect. Lynch seems content to satisfy neither of those quotas.

Think about it from Charlotte’s perspective for a second. She’s got the locker room breathing down her neck for title opportunities and the only way out is to defeat an opponent she hasn’t been able to overcome.

...Good luck.

I think we’re going to see a particularly nasty Charlotte Flair in this match, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this match happens before the Lynch vs. Lacey Evans fight. But does that mean Charlotte can finally put Lynch away?

Lynch was the first to complain about having to deal with Charlotte yet again, but the SmackDown Live locker room also stepped up at last. Bayley appeared to challenge Charlotte, but the Queen was able to fend off the competition for her final shot at Lynch.

Universal championship match

Seth Rollins (c) vs. AJ Styles

One of the biggest roster changes of the 2019 Superstar Shakeup was unveiled on the Apr. 15 episode of Raw when AJ Styles came out as a mystery partner for Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. It was official - Styles was now a member of the Raw roster.

The Phenomenal One spent the better part of the last three years turning SmackDown Live into the House That AJ Styles Built. It’s now clear that he plans to work his ass off every Monday night to build that same foundation of excellence on Raw.

Styles wasted no time, winning two separate matches on the Apr. 22 Raw in order to earn a Universal championship match against Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank. Rollins came out to offer Styles a congratulatory handshake, a clear sign of respect between two elite athletes.

But things quickly devolved from there. The trash talk began one week later during a contract signing. This time AJ eventually offered his hand to Seth, but Rollins decided to ignore the gesture and instead held up the Universal title right in AJ’s face. This incited a brawl which resulted in Rollins eating a Phenomenal Forearm right through a table.

Rollins and Styles were forced to team up one week later, and shockingly, it didn’t go well. AJ Styles was poised to strike Baron Corbin with a Phenomenal Forearm, but the Lone Wolf moved out of the way at the last second. The end result was that Rollins was blasted with yet another one right in his kisser. Styles reacted to this mistake in suspicious fashion, by walking out of the ring and ditching his partner. So...was it really a mistake after all?

After taking AJ’s best shot in consecutive weeks, Seth Rollins doesn’t really give a damn if that last blow was intentional or not. The Architect is fired up and said he plans to give AJ a receipt in the form of two black eyes and a broken face.

This is essentially a dream match, the first time ever that Rollins and Styles will meet one-on-one in a WWE ring on pay-per-view. The stakes couldn’t be much higher, as the Universal championship hangs in the balance. Will AJ Styles demonstrate to the world that Monday Night Rollins is a thing of the past, or will Rollins burn AJ’s plan right down to the ground?

We’re just hours away from the WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, and that means we’re just hours away from the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match. It’s an important match, considering the winner is likely looking at a future run with the Universal or WWE championship.

Here is the field, and how likely they are to win:

Ricochet: A fairly recent call up, he was given a fairly strong push when he was running alongside Aleister Black but it’s been back-and-forth since he started his singles run. His high flying ways are perfect for this match type, but does the big bossman see him as a future world champion? Verdict: Unlikely!

Andrade: He’s been steadily putting on good matches with a wide range of talent and recent reports indicate the higher ups are high on him. He’s got the right look, the right skill set, and appeals to a market WWE needs to do more to tap into going forward. Verdict: Maybe!

Drew McIntyre: He’s big, he looks great, his promos are strong, and he can do enough in the ring to be a top guy. He’s also a heel, which helps a lot with carrying that briefcase around. There have been plenty of reports that Vince McMahon still thinks very highly of him and he’s mostly been protected. Verdict: Highly likely!

Finn Balor: He’s the current Intercontinental champion, and while his inclusion should make this match fun, there isn’t really much reason for him to win the briefcase beyond trying to create a shocking moment. Verdict: Highly unlikely!

Sami Zayn: He beat Braun Strowman to take his place in the match, and that means we’re likely getting a run-in from “The Monster Among Men” to ensure Zayn doesn’t win. Having said that, he would be a great candidate considering his recent character work and the outstanding promos he’s been cutting since his return. Verdict: Possibly!

Baron Corbin: There’s just no way they give him the briefcase again after the massive failure that was his last run with it. Plus, the latest reports have him next in line for Seth Rollins anyway. Verdict: Highly unlikely!

Ali: He’s still playing the underdog but he does it quite well. That means it’s at least possible he gets the surprise win. Verdict: Possibly!

Randy Orton: I’m not entirely sure why he’s in this match. Verdict: Highly unlikely!

Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match

Ember Moon vs. Mandy Rose vs. Dana Brooke vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley vs. Natalya vs. Naomi vs. Carmella

Let’s not waste any time with the “Road to Money in the Bank” or “What’s at stake?” stuff.

The participants were announced by Alexa Bliss without any explanation for why they were chosen. The build has consisted of tag and multi-person battles for “momentum”, with occasional teases about the possibility of a two-time Ms. Money in the Bank. But now inaugural winner Carmella is the only person with a chance of making that happen, so to paraphrase a Genetic Freak, the odds of that storyline bearing fruit have drastic gone down.

A contract for a title shot at the time and place of the winner’s choosing is at stake. No woman has ever lost a match where she cashed in that briefcase with that contract inside (granted, there have only been two). So whoever climbs the ladder and grabs the case tomorrow night stands a pretty good chance of becoming Raw or SmackDown Women’s champ.

Got it? Okay, now let’s break down the field - starting with the representatives from the red brand:

Naomi

Resume: Total Divas cast member, two-time SmackDown Women’s champ, WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal winner

Why she’ll win: You can never rule Trinity Fatu out in big moments. She’s someone WWE can count on to deliver and exciting match people will respond to. A briefcase and run with the Raw Women’s title would check all the boxes for what is probably already a Hall of Fame career.
Why she won’t: Doesn’t make a ton of booking sense, as face briefcase winners always feel a little off. There wouldn’t be a ton of heat for a Becky Lynch feud, and a rivalry with Lacey Evans would make the Lady feel a little more Laura Ingraham/Tomi Lahren than anyone is probably comfortable with.

Natalya

Resume: Hart Dungeon trainee, Total Divas cast member, Divas champ, SmackDown Women’s champ

Why she’ll win: You can pretty much cut & paste the Naomi section, except Natty is a no doubter for Vince McMahon’s Hall of Fame. And she actually does make sense as a rival for whoever leaves Hartford with the red brand strap, since proving yourself against a Hart can always be a story for anyone of either alignment.
Why she won’t: It was about six years between her previous title reigns, so her next one probably won’t be until 2023 or so.

Dana Brooke

Resume: Championship caliber fitness competitor, former statistician for Titus Worldwide

Why she’ll win: Raw’s Women’s scene feels pretty depleted, and this could be a good way to quickly establish a new competitor.
Why she won’t: If WWE was going to take Brooke seriously as a title contender, it would have happened by now.

Nikki Cross

Resume: Indie & NXT darling

Why she’ll win: Both because it would immediately set her up as a player in the scene, and because it would make the fans who complain the loudest but regularly show up & tune in happy. And Triple H did say we’re the authority...
Why she won’t: She wouldn’t even be in the match if Alexa’d been cleared. I’m not even sure she’d officially assigned to Raw. These are not signs the brass have big plans for you.

And from the blue brand, we have...

Bayley

Resume: NXT Women’s champ, Raw Women’s champ, WWE Women’s Tag champ

Why she’ll win: Adult fans waver, but younger ones seem to love her, and she reportedly consistently moves merch. She’s a heck of an in-ring performer, and her role in history as a NXT Horsewoman gives her a similar aura to what Natalya gets from being a Hart Dungeon trainee. They also appeared to be starting to tweak her character to give her more edge post-Superstar Shake-up and pre-MitB “momentum” series.
Why she won’t: It’s rarely felt like Vince & his creative team are sold on Bayley, and there’s no reason to believe a consistent arc of character development, let alone a sustained push, is in her future.

Ember Moon

Resume: NXT Women’s champ

Why she’ll win: A Finn Bálor-like gimmick which stays over without needing to be explained/make sense thanks to a cool look and a dope finisher. A very good and fun to watch in-ring talent.
Why she won’t: Has shown a tendency to get sidelined with injuries throughout her WWE career, and that coule lead to some hesitancy on the part of the backstage players to elevate her much beyond the mid-card or tag scene.

Carmella

Resume: former (and future?) Total Divas cast member, Money in the Bank winner (2017), SmackDown Women’s champ

Why she’ll win: She’s more over now as a babyface than when she won as a heel, and has improved all aspects of her game since James Ellsworth threw her the briefcase and set fire to the internet two years ago.
Why she won’t: See above re: babyfaces with the briefcase rarely make for great stories. And if she’s getting pops doing dance breaks, why wouldn’t WWE just let her keep doing her thing?

Mandy Rose

Resume: Championship caliber fitness competitor, former Total Divas cast member

Why she’ll win: Corey Graves’ orgasmic reaction to her arrival on-screen is probably being fed to him by the Chairman of the company. She could take the Eva Marie gimmick pretty far, seeing as she’s much more capable between the ropes than All Red Everything was. This would signal her move to the next level.
Why she won’t: They may have bigger plans for her - ones that wouldn’t involve risking her looking like a second fiddle to Lynch or Charlotte Flair. Since the SmackDown women’s division is stacked, a briefcase win wouldn’t necessarily elevate her if fans aren’t ready to buy into her as a threat. And to this point in her career, not much has been done to make her seem like a threat.
