Impact Wrestling preview (July 5, 2018): Employment opportunities

New, 3 comments

Impact Wrestling returns tonight (July 5) from St Clair college in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It is the second episode from the most recent set of tapings.

Here’s what’s advertised for tonight:

  • Allie & Madison Rayne vs. Su Yung and her undead maid of honor
  • Kongo Kong vs. Brian Cage - winner faces Matt Sydal for the X Division title
  • Rich Swann vs. Fenix
  • Killer Kross debuts
  • Konnan has proof that King is dirty
  • Katarina’s first match back

As per usual, here are our five questions about Impact tonight:

1) How does one go from mystery criminal to employed wrestler?

Killer Kross was introduced to the world of Impact as a mystery backstage attacker. For months, his actions had Impact on high alert as random members of the roster and crew were suddenly found unconscious backstage.

Don Callis spoke about having the authorities on the job but each week they came up empty.

Then this hulking man, who we learn goes by Killer Kross, attacked Petey Williams in front of the camera. Finally they had their man. So what happened? Did he go to jail? There was at least a restraining order, right?

No, they gave him a job.

Well, that’s not too wise. It’s not like he was already employed as a wrestler prior because he was disguising as a security guard. Why would Don Callis and Scott D’Amore walk up to this man who terrorized their roster and hand him a contract? Wrestling, man.

To be fair to Impact, this is the type of thing that happens all the time in wrestling that never makes any sense. I just get a chuckle out of it. “Dude attacked everyone backstage? Let’s get him a contract.”

Well at least Petey Williams will eventually get a chance for some revenge.

2) Where does Allie fit in?

After a good month off TV, Allie returned last week to save #1 contender Madison Rayne from Su Yung and her undead bridesmaids. (Undead bridesmaids just doesn’t roll off the tongue like undead brides.)

While she’ll be teaming with Madison to take on Su and one of her undead bridesmaids tonight, she should be owed a title rematch eventually.

How will that work out? Will she face Madison with a chance to take her Slammiversary spot? Will they both get a chance at Slammiversary in a triple threat match? I suppose it all depends on Allie’s future with the company, and if she’s working the PPV at all.

3) Who is the maid of honor?

For the first time on Impact, one of Su Yung’s undead army will step between the ropes for a match.

My guess was indie wrestlers or maybe actors played the role of the bridesmaids. If one is going to fight tonight, it’ll have to be someone with some wrestling experience.

They wouldn’t want to directly introduce a Knockout as Su Yung’s henchwoman since that’s a character with a pretty low ceiling. But it’s a good chance to get some local talent some time or to give the company a chance to look at someone for perhaps a different role in the future.

It will be interesting to see how much time they get in the ring and their dynamic with Su Yung, who is the leader of that group.

4) Is Kongo Kong going to wrestle at Slammiversary?

Brian Cage faces Kongo Kong tonight and the winner gets the right to face Matt Sydal for the X Division title at Slammiversary.

It will almost surely be Cage facing Sydal. They’re not going to run a heel vs. heel match. So where does that leave Kong?

He wasn’t on the Redemption PPV. He had a big match with Johnny Impact a couple weeks prior but wasn’t on the big show. This could be the same situation. This feels like this is his big match and he won’t have anything for the PPV.

That’s not set in stone obviously. They can set something up for Jimmy Jacob’s monster, but they’ll have to do it quickly if that go that route. Slammiversary is 3 weeks away. That’s little time to build a program.

5) How many bird puns will Josh Mathews drop during the Swann vs. Fenix match?

He won’t be able to resist at least a couple. But it won’t be as many as Matt Stryker would hit us with.

Impact Wrestling airs tonight at 8 EST on Pop TV. Who’s watching?
