Impact Wrestling preview (May 31, 2018): Under Pressure

New, comments

Impact Wrestling returns tonight (May 31) from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida. It is the sixth episode from the most recent set of tapings.

This is their Under Pressure special. Here’s what’s advertised:

  • Pentagon Jr. (c) vs. Austin Aries for the Impact world title
  • Allie (c) vs. Su Yung in a Last Rites match for the Knockouts title
  • Eli Drake vs. Scott Steiner
  • Dezmond Xavier vs. Brian Cage
  • Madison Rayne vs. Tessa Blanchard

As per usual, here are our five questions about Impact tonight:

1) Is Pentagon’s time as champ over?

Austin Aries has a chance to win back his world title from Pentagon Jr. tonight, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a change here.

When Pentagon defeated Aries at the Redemption pay-per-view (PPV), it created a bit of positive buzz. Pentagon is a favorite of many fans, and it was a shocking finish.

But since then, he’s been an afterthought as world champion in the month and a half he’s been champion. He’s been on TV four out of the five episodes, but those segments have all felt a bit underwhelming. Even his successful title defense against Eli Drake was disappointing. (Much of that was due to the fact they got less than ten minutes for a world title match.)

A portion of this should definitely be laid on the booking committee, that hasn’t done anything too exciting with the luchador since he won the title. Surely they could do more with him. Even if they feel they could be limited in ring since he doesn’t speak much English, they do plenty of pretaped segments (and they do them well) that they could do with the man.

And they still could, but I suspect they will shift the title back to a man who has been larger than life as Impact champion, even though with work, Pentagon could fit that bill.

2) Will Rosemary have an impact in the Knockout titles match?

A month ago, Rosemary was locked in a coffin by Su Yung and her undead brides. Knockouts champion Allie was forced to watch. Two weeks ago, Su and her brides took the coffin into the forest and lit it ablaze.

This week, Allie has to defend her Knockouts title against Su Yung in a Last Rites match, which is really a casket match. Will Rosemary make an impact?

Even though Rosemary has been destroyed, she’s able to make contact with Allie. She did so last week, leaving a note on Allie’s mirror imploring her not to let the darkness consume her. It doesn’t seem like Allie is listening as she was dressed in Rosemary’s demon face paint when looking into that mirror.

Since Rosemary is existing in some form, will she make her presence known in tonight’s match, whether it be in her corporeal form or some more spiritual form? If she doesn’t, is Allie’s version of the darkness going to be enough to repel Su and the brides?

3) Are Eli Drake and Scott Steiner at full feud?

Former tag champions Drake and Steiner face off this week. While they’re not mortal enemies or anything, there has been some tension. It started when Drake didn’t want Steiner in his corner during his world title match. Then they lost the titles because Steiner accidentally hit Drake with a chair.

While they bickered about it last week some, it certainly seems they still like each other to some degree. Is this feud just beginning? Or is this something creative just want to moves past so they can get to the next thing for both men?

4) Is Madison Rayne sticking around?

The former multi-time Knockout champion has been coming and going from Impact lately. It wasn’t too long ago she was working some matches with Ring of Honor. But now she’s back with Impact, at least long enough to put over their next big star Tessa Blanchard.

However, it doesn’t have to be a one and done. In the current new-look Knockouts division, there’s certainly a spot for Madison. That spot could be putting over the newer talent they want to promote. But despite having a full career in Impact already, Madison is only 32 and could have many years as part of the division if she so chooses. A character tweak and a good story is all that could be needed for another run at the top.

5) Will Cage vs. Xavier be an X Division match?

Big man Brian Cage goes against X Division member Dezmond Xavier. So this could be a big guy/little guy match. But Brian Cage isn’t any big guy. He moves like a cruiserweight despite his heavyweight frame.

That means we may see Cage bust out some impressive moves. And I expect we will. This could be an exciting match.
