Sammy Guevara crashes and burns in crazy death-defying spot at AEW Battle of the Belts

AEW Battle of the Belts IX took place tonight (Jan. 13), and the most anticipated bout on the card saw Big Bill and Ricky Starks defend the AEW world tag team titles against Le Sex Gods (Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara) in a street fight.

Earlier this week on Dynamite, AEW shielded babyface Jericho from any boos from the live crowd by channeling his inner New Jack and playing “Judas” for the entirety of his appearance. Perhaps that goal was in mind once again as most of this wild fight took place outside and backstage, rather than in front of the live fans in the arena.

At any rate, this bout was pure chaos from start to finish, with weapons and plunder galore. There was a fun call-back early on when Guevara ran over Ricky and Big with the infamous golf cart:

Jericho and Guevara also tried to take the big man out with a suplex onto a car windshield:

Jericho mixed in some comedy by using a copy machine on Ricky’s face:

The match did ultimately spill out to the live arena for the finish, where the Don Callis Family got involved to screw over Le Sex Gods.

Konosuke Takeshita first helped Big Bill powerbomb Jericho through a table in a high-risk spot:

With Chris and Big out for good, Sammy still had a chance to beat Ricky for the belts. He ended the match in spectacular fashion, with a crazy death-defying leap that resulted in a crash and burn:

The idea here is that Powerhouse Hobbs pulled Starks out of harm’s way at the last second, but I think he was a little late to the punch.

Sammy was in no condition to compete following that crash-landing, so Ricky got an arm over him for the three count.
