Favorites separate from the pack in Continental Classic’s Gold League

The second week of AEW’s Continental Classic tournament kicked off on Dynamite tonight (Nov. 29), with three more matches in the Gold League. You can get caught up on everything that happened in week one here.

Bryan Danielson hasn’t had a match yet even though he’s part of The C2 field, but he was on hand for commentary.

The first match he got to call featured his Blackpool Combat Club teammate Jon Moxley. The story of this one was how Mox injured his knee on a dive. Lethal targeted the knee throughout, and it may remain a story going forward. For tonight, he was able to cap off his comeback with a choke hold to pick up three points for a submission victory.

A leg injury was also featured in the second Gold League match of the night, this one between Mark Briscoe and RUSH. A bad landing after a lariat from Briscoe forced the ringside medical team to check on El Toro Blanco’s leg. They gave RUSH the go ahead to continue, and he went on to survive a Froggy Bow and avoid a Jay Driller. The Bull’s Horns got him a pin and gave him his first three points. It also left the Sussex County Chicken on zero with Lethal.

The main event seemed like it might give us our first draw of the tournament. Commentary played up the 20 minute time limit from the start, and neither Swerve Strickland or Jay White had the upperhand for long before ring announcer Justin Roberts announced there were only five minutes left.

With crowd firmly behind Strickland, it also seemed like we might get another ref bump in a Switchblade match. But Bryce Remsburg protected himself better this time, and Swerve had White’s low blow move scouted...

After that five minute time call, Strickland survived one Blade Runner by rolling out of the ring. A frustrated White tried for another, but Swerve rolled him up and tied Mox for the League lead.

Here are the updated standings for the Continental Classic:

Gold League

Jon Moxley (2-0-0): 6 points
Swerve Strickland (2-0-0): 6
RUSH (1-1-0): 3
Jay White (1-1-0): 3
Mark Briscoe 0-2-0): 0
Jay Lethal (0-2-0): 0

Blue League

Claudio Castagnoli (1-0-0): 3 points
Brody King (1-0-0): 3
Bryan Danielson (0-0-0):0
Andrade El Idolo (0-0-0): 0
Daniel Garcia (0-1-0): 0
Eddie Kingston (0-1-0): 0

The Blue League gets back to it on Collision this Saturday (Dec. 2) with three more matches as Andrade El Ídolo & The American Dragon join the fray:

  • Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brody King
  • Daniel Garcia vs. Andrade El Ídolo
  • Bryan Danielson vs. Eddie Kingston

No word yet on next Wednesday’s Gold League matches, but there should be three of them and there’s three possible opponents left for each man.
