Personally, I had a few moments of doubt early on in CM Punk’s first match since 2014, against Darby Allin at All Out last night (Sept. 5). “Is this what a 2021 CM Punk match is going to look like? And if so, do I like it?”
In retrospect, that was due to equal parts an understandably longer than normal “feeling out” portion of the match, and my anticipation-driven expectations I had for Punk vs. Darby... and the overthinking that resulted in.
Eventually, it was all good. The second half of the match unquestionably rocked, and got me out of critical fan brain and into my pure fan heart. But that early self-distraction caused me to miss out on the references Punk & Allin were throwing into a classic “veteran vs. upstart” match of yesteryear.
Fortunately, the wrestle web was there to make sure I and others didn’t miss the tributes to Hall of Famers Bret Hart and Sean “1-2-3 Kid” Waltman’s 1994 WWF championship match on Raw.
