It’s almost impossible to pick the highlight of Dynamite this week

July 7’s Road Rager edition of AEW Dynamite wasn’t a perfect show. I’m not saying that. But aided by (all but one member of) a hot Miami crowd in the James L. Knight Center, it was an exciting one.

Some of that was fueled by storytelling beats they’ve been working for years to pull off, like the moment where Hangman Page confronted his old partner Kenny Omega with the World title they’re destined to fight over laying on the ground between them. Others came almost completely unexpectedly, such as when Malakai Black arrived out of the darkness to attack the heads of Nightmare Family.

The episode started with a match many associate with AEW’s territories era DNA. Then it ended with one straight out this century’s independent scene. They don’t do it every week, but Road Rager showed just how well Tony Khan & team can execute the “something for everyone” pro wrestling format.

If you’ve got to pick one thing, it’s probably the introduction of Black. It was perfectly executed, down to the foreshadowing flickering of lights during Cody Rhodes’ opener - and the kind of surprise moment that’s all too rare these days.

But Dynamite this week was a two hour thrill ride. Everything probably didn’t work for you, but during the segments that didn’t you barely had time to catch your breath before the next one that did.
