After the Fri., May 28 episode of AEW Dynamite, a clip of one of the company’s Spanish language announcers mocking Hikaru Shida’s accent was shared on social media. Willie Urbina didn’t realize his “joke” was being sent on on the Fite.tv stream, but that was no excuse. Word quickly followed the company had fired him.
During the post-Double or Nothing media scrum, AEW President Tony Khan briefly commented on the situation. Late last night (May 31), Shida tweeted her thoughts about the situation in both English and Japanese.
I didn’t wanna talk about this before my big day, so let me tell you now.— HIKARU SHIDA 志田 光 (@shidahikaru) June 1, 2021
I don’t give a shit what other people say about my race because I love it and I proud of it, and because I know which is fool. I don’t even feel anger.
So don’t need to worry about me Thank you.
In addition to all the other reasons Urbina’s impersonation of Shida was shitty, the now-former Women’s champion has shared in the past about how promo-ing in English makes her nervous. And despite whatever anxiety she feels, and the fact she’s not a native speaker, her English promos are pretty damn good.
So, go off, Shida! We won’t worry about you, but we will give you a virtual round of applause for this response.
