Cody denies heat between AEW EVPs, seems to blame the rumor on angry WWE fans

Earlier this month there was a juicy rumor about heat between some of the AEW Executive Vice-Presidents (Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks). Matt and Nick Jackson had some fun with the story, joking about not being on speaking terms.

Cody addressed the rumor on a media call ahead of this weekend’s (Sun., May 30) Double or Nothing pay-per-view event. He denied that there’s any truth to the story:

Well when I heard that story was floating around, it is one of the things I chalk up as we’ve been very successful, AEW. And with NXT losing the Wednesday night wars, that created a lot of anger. And I understand that there is a lot of hardcore NXT and WWE fans out there. That’s why stories like that don’t surprise me. I think people need to cling to something.

And as sexy as that story is, I talk to Matt and Nick every day. I talk to Kenny very often. I support their projects fully. They’ve been supportive of all my projects. And we would not be able to put [Dynamite] on the air. Tony [Khan is] the man, and Tony’s the boss, but we would not be able to put this show on the air if the four of us were not functioning as one team.

Unfortunately it’s not very sexy to say, but there’s no truth to that. Again, we’re one team, and now with us expanding onto TBS, we will remain one team.

As someone who harbors no anger towards AEW, I can say that Cody’s assumption about this rumor being related to angry WWE and NXT fans needing to latch on to something is missing the point. It’s a sexy story even if you are fully ensconced in the AEW ecosphere, with zero regard for the WWE, because potential infighting among the top decision-makers in a relatively new wrestling company sounds like the sort of dysfunction that can have severe negative ramifications on the AEW product.

Cody strongly denies that the rumor is true. His rationale about AEW needing the EVPs to function as one team makes a lot of sense, though there’s no word yet on how much he focus-grouped this response. I’ll leave it up to others to read way too much into his words about how often he speaks to Kenny Omega in relation to the Young Bucks.

Is Cody’s denial good enough for you, Cagesiders?
