Sting may not have been able to wrestle as long as he stayed in WWE, what with his suffering what was believed to be a career ending injury on a buckle bomb from Seth Rollins years ago, but AEW was willing to book him in, at the very least, a cinematic match.
That was what we got at AEW Revolution tonight (Sun., Mar. 7, 2021) on pay-per-view, with the Stinger teaming up with Darby Allin to take on Ricky Starks and Brian Cage in a Street Fight that would take place “at a unique location.”
That location turned out to be an abandoned building with a ring set up in it. Allin and Sting entered with a group of hooded folks wearing Sting masks. Many of them ended up brutalized by Cage.
He’s very big, and very strong.
The rest of them eventually bailed, leaving Cage to beat on Allin while Sting put the boots to Starks. This went on for a quite a while, until Sting showed up to double team the big fella.
It’s worth pointing out that, despite this being a cinematic match, complete with a soundtrack, they still had commentary for it. Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone, Excalibur, and Taz were talking over the action at all times.
Naturally, Powerhouse Hobbs and Hook showed up to help Team Taz but Sting’s trusty bat was the equalizer. Allin did a crazy ass flying elbow from the second story through a table, putting Cage out of action.
Back in the ring, Starks couldn’t get the better of the Stinger in a one-on-one encounter, with the Scorpion Death Drop proving to be enough to score a three count to give the good guys the victory.
If this showed anything, it’s that Sting can absolutely still go.
