Tonight’s (Oct. 15) episode of AEW Rampage kicked off with CM Punk taking on Matt Sydal in a singles match. This is how AEW decided to begin their battle against the final half hour of WWE’s Supersized SmackDown.
After defeating Darby Allin in his comeback match to pro wrestling, Punk has since gone on a mini tour of beating lower card guys on the AEW roster, including Powerhouse Hobbs and Daniel Garcia. Would Matt Sydal fare any better than those men did against Punk?
Nope. Well, not in the Win-Loss column, anyway.
Sydal had plenty of moments to shine and the match was quite good, but he got caught with a GTS out of nowhere. After Punk won, the commentary team emphasized that he’s still undefeated in AEW, and Punk also seemed to acknowledge as much in the ring.
For what it’s worth, the Miami crowd was super into Punk for this one, chanting for ice cream bars, chanting his name, and just generally going crazy for the guy. He’s kind of a big deal, folks.
